Name studies, or Onomastics, studies designations and labels of people (Anthroponymy) and places (Toponymy). Toponymy is particularly useful when studying societies with no written sources, since we then have a linguistic source which can complement other sources in the analyses, such as Archaeology.

Old Norse mythology is a field which attracts a lot of interest, by academics as well as laymen.  There are innumerable TV series, films, fiction books and cartoons using motives and gods from the Old Norse mythology, a mythology which is more or less totally built up from Old Icelandic written sources, such as the Poetic Edda and Snorra Edda.

When adding the cultic and sacral place-name evidence to this brew, we can qualify the written sources. The names sometimes paint a different picture to the written sources. One contribution that place names present us with is 'geography' to the mythology. In this paper I will discuss the genesis and how the study of cultic and sacral toponymy has developed, and also present some illuminating cases.

A morning of short papers on personal and place-names of the UK from Keith Briggs, Kathryn Bullen, Thomas Clancy, Clare Green, and Paul Tempan. For those not familiar with Zoom, there will be advice on how to access and use it, and an opportunity for a practice session. Non-members are welcome to attend, though if necessary numbers may have to be limited. The conference is free but booking is essential. Further details on the booking process will follow in a few days.

Keith Briggs The first girls in England

The words ‘boy’ and ‘girl’ are both of very obscure etymology. Both are attested as personal names before lexical use starts to be recorded about 1300, but whether the anthroponymic evidence is of any value for the history of the words is controversial. This paper points out that ‘girl’ occurs as a byname throughout the thirteenth century, but only in East Anglia. This allows speculation that the word originated in the east, possibly as a borrowing from a continental language heard in the coastal ports. The talk is based on a paper available here.

Clare Green (SOAS, University of London) Naming Welsh-speaking children: case studies from London and Gwynedd

Many factors go into choosing children's names, and for multilingual families there are extra issues to consider. Should the name represent all the family’s languages? How much should it take into account the linguistic environment the family lives in? Does the chosen name predict the language(s) a child will speak as they grow up? This paper looks at two families with a first-language Welsh-speaking parent, living in very different linguistic landscapes: one in London and one in Gwynedd, North Wales. Based on qualitative interviews with parents, it explores how they chose their children's names, the influence of their Welsh-speaking heritage, and how the decisions reflect their linguistic attitudes and practices. This research uses names as a medium to learn about personal experiences of multilingualism and family language policy. This paper is based on research for a Masters dissertation in Language Documentation and Description.

In this talk I will take you on a journey into the bogs and moors of the Isle of Axholme, situated in north Lincolnshire. The presentation will give an overview of my current PhD research, which aims to assess the impact of language, history, and landscape on place-names on the Isle of Axholme. I will explore the background to the project, demonstrate some of the evidence I have collected so far, and ask how what we know of the past can help manage future challenges.

Онлайн-конкурс «Ұлттық ономастика – ел айнасы»

В управлении по развитию языков Восточно-Казахстанской области прошел онлайн-конкурс «Ұлттық ономастика – ел айнасы» ("Национальная ономастика - зеркало страны"). Целью мероприятия является активизация законодательства об ономастике, а также систематизация и унификация вопросов в этой области. В мероприятии приняли участие 7 команд из специалистов, работающих в сфере ономастики городов и районов области. Участники продемонстрировали свои знания, а также прочитали отрывки из нормативно-правовых актов, регламентирующих сферу ономастики. Историк Жаннета Калимолдина, входившая в состав жюри, изучает ономастику, в том числе топонимику уже более 7 лет. Она считает, что люди должны уделять внимание и проявлять особый интерес к географическим названиям, ведь в каждом из них кроется история того или иного места, его истоки, с каждым из них связаны какие-либо события. Участники выполнили поставленные перед ними задачи. Победители будут награждены специальными дипломами и ценными призами. Все остальные команды, которые активно принимали участие в конкурсе, будут нагрждены благодартвенными письмами. 

L’importance de l’onomastique dans l’accès au pouvoir politique

« L’importance de l’onomastique dans l’accès au pouvoir politique, « le Naam », au Yatenga du XVIe au XXIe siècle ». C’est un thème qui a fait l’objet d’une thèse de doctorat unique en histoire politique et sociale. Ayant reçu l’auréole de la mention très honorable le 25 juillet 2020 à l’Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo à Ouagadougou, ce travail de l’impétrant Alli Ouédraogo donne une clé de lecture de la succession royale au Yatenga, à la croisée des pouvoirs traditionnel et moderne.

L’onomastique, vous connaissez ? Pour tous ceux qui ne le savent pas, eh bien, c’est la science des noms de personnes et des lieux. Le Dr Alli Ouédraogo, dans ce sujet, « L’importance de l’onomastique dans l’accès au pouvoir politique, « le Naam », au Yatenga du XVIe au XXIe siècle (de Naaba Yadéga à Naaba Kiiba) », a posé le problème de l’utilisation des identités, en particulier des patronymes, dans la gestion du pouvoir politique traditionnel dans le royaume du Yatenga. La condition primordiale pour accéder au pouvoir est d’être de sang royal, c’est-à dire d’appartenir à la famille des Nakomsé, la famille princière. Cependant, ce principe de succession, de Naaba Yadéga, père fondateur du royaume de Yatenga, à Naaba Kiiba, l’actuel roi, a connu de profondes mutations. L’impétrant a identifié 4 moments importants qui ont marqué l’histoire de cette royauté.

Tout d’abord, il y a la période XVe - XVIe siècle. A cette ère, être de la lignée des Nakomsé était primordial pour accéder au pouvoir. Mais certains des membres de cette famille ont été écartés du pouvoir après les compétitions au cours desquelles les vainqueurs leur ont imposé des patronymes. Ensuite, vint l’époque du XVIIe au XVIIIe siècle, qui a connu de profondes mutations historiques initiées par Naaba Kango. Il a en effet favorisé l’installation de nombreux peuples qui, aujourd’hui, portent des noms de famille d’origine étrangère. Ce souverain a intégré les autochtones et les nouveaux arrivants dans la gestion du pouvoir politique afin que le pouvoir soit véritablement celui de tout le nouveau peuple. Naaba Kango a touché aux fondements des structures dirigeantes, générant des conflits dans la gestion du pouvoir à partir des patronymes, des modes de succession. Naaba Kango disparaît, laissant un royaume puissant mais fragilisé par la suite par des rivalités de succession et des disputes dynastiques. Après, survint la période coloniale qui a introduit de nouveaux critères de succession royale qui prennent uniquement en compte l’intérêt du colonisateur. L’onomastique perd alors son importance dans le principe de succession au trône. Notre ère, le XXIe siècle, engendre le quatrième âge de la royauté du Yatenga, marqué par le regain d’importance du principe d’être de la lignée des Nakomsé pour l’accession au pouvoir traditionnel. La particularité introduite est que tous les Nakomsé, de vieilles tout comme de nouvelles souches, ont le droit d’accéder au pouvoir.

Les recherches du désormais docteur ont permis de comprendre comment, en instrumentalisant les patronymes, des souverains, même vaincus ou illégitimes, ont pu accéder au pouvoir politique et devenir de nos jours incontournables dans la gestion administrative moderne. L’autre mérite de sa thèse tient au fait qu’elle a montré les limites de notre démocratie. Ainsi, parfois n’accèdent pas au pouvoir ceux qui en sont dignes par leurs compétences personnelles. L’on constate malencontreusement l’usage du patronyme dans la conquête du pouvoir politique moderne, ce qui fausse la logique et les principes de la démocratie. Le travail du Dr Alli Ouédraogo nous invite à réajuster notre approche de la démocratie. Il plaide toutefois pour que cette dernière intègre bien la chefferie traditionnelle dans la gestion et le fonctionnement de la société pour une cohésion sociale effective et constante. Il a également montré les éléments qui fondent l’identité du peuple yadega, qui fait partie du grand groupe moaaga du Moogo. Il a conclu en posant la problématique de l’avenir des noms traditionnels africains qui disparaissent au contact des cultures étrangères.

En rappel, la thèse a été dirigée par le Pr Maurice Bazemo de l’université Joseph Ki-Zerbo. Le jury a été présidé par le directeur de recherche du Centre national de recherche scientifique et technologique, le Pr Moustapha Gomgnibou, qui avait à ses côtés le Pr Aka Kouame de l’université Félix-Houphouët-Boigny de Cocody et le Pr Alain Sissao de l’Institut des sciences des sociétés.

Sjuttonde nordiska namnforskarkongressen i Finland den 8–11 juni 2021

Den sjuttonde nordiska namnforskarkongressen kommer att hållas i Finland 8.-11.6.2021 med temat Namn och gränser.

Namn kan finnas på gränsen mellan olika länder, områden, kommuner och byar samt mellan urban och rural miljö. Dessutom kan namn finnas på gränsen mellan olika språk och olika kulturer. Namn kan också ha uppstått på grund av att de ligger vid geografiska gränser. Den här typen av frågor har studerats länge inom onomastiken men de är aktuella även idag. Med globaliseringen har också nya möten mellan språk och kulturer skett. 

Inom onomastiken har ortnamn och personnamn studerats flitigast. Kommersiella namn har blivit föremål för studier under de senaste årtiondena. Även andra namnkategorier har varit i fokus och till exempel har namn på Internet nyligen väckt mycket intresse. Men var går gränserna mellan namnkategorierna? Är gränsen mellan ortnamn och personnamn entydig? Vilka slags namnkategorier finns egentligen och hur kan vi överhuvudtaget beskriva kategorierna och deras gränser? Olika kategoriseringar har skissats upp inom onomastiken, men hur omfattande och uppdaterade är de? Har vi namnforskare varit uppmärksamma på nya och framväxande namnkategorier? Studier och diskussioner om olika namnkategorier och gränserna mellan dem behövs. 

Namnforskningen är på många sätt tvärvetenskaplig. Namn intresserar inte bara namnforskare utan också till exempel lingvister, geografer, antropologer och etnologer. För att namn ska kunna studeras mångsidigt och innovativt behövs det ofta olika synpunkter och metoder. Inom lingvistiken har till exempel sociolingvistiken och studier inom lingvistiska landskap bidragit med nya ansatser till onomastiken. Vilka teoretiska och metodiska utgångspunkter har man utnyttjat inom onomastiken och vilka kunde tas i bruk? Vilka slags möten mellan olika vetenskapsområden kunde hjälpa onomastiken att hitta nya frågor och möjligheter? 

Inom kongressens tema Namn och gränser ryms presentationer av olika slag och ur olika synvinklar. Vi välkomnar undersökningar som på ett eller annat sätt tangerar tema.

Med hänsyn till det pågående coronaläget har vi beslutat att genomföra kongressen virtuellt vilket ger möjlighet att delta på distans, med föredrag eller utan. Beroende på hur förhållandena utvecklas fram till sommaren 2021 hoppas vi att vi även kan välkomna er på plats, och i så fall blir det möjligt att delta antingen på distans eller på plats. Om konferensen kan genomföras på plats blir det på Helsingfors universitet. Vi uppdaterar informationen kontinuerligt både med utskick och på vår webbsida.

ON THE TERM ‘COGNITIVE TOPONYMY’

Abstract

The article is devoted to the theoretical base of consideration of toponyms through the prism of cognitive and linguistic traditions. The author studies the advisability of introducing the terms "cognitive toponymy" and "cognitive toponym" and, after conducting a comprehensive analysis of domestic and foreign scientific literature on the topic, shows that, in general, researchers are careful with terminology in a cognitive toponymic context, preferring to replace the collocations "cognitive toponymy" and "cognitive toponym" by descriptive constructions. The article substantiates the conclusion about their necessity in an onomastic terminology system and puts forward proposals for the formulation of the definition of these terms. The author makes assumptions about the goals and objectives of cognitive toponymy as a science. The close connection between the scientific and cognitive approach and toponymy is supported by examples.

1. Introduction

In the 21st century, toponymic research methods are characterized by the rapid development of Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies, updating of the term system, the emergence of new trends in scientific onomastic study. Any modern scientific research requires the use of new approaches in the consideration of geographical nominations and their comprehensive study using new methods.

Recent studies in the field of cognitive linguistics have given impetus to the development of toponymy research in this aspect. “At present, cognitive linguistics is one of the most actively developing and relatively young areas of modern linguistics” [11, P. 85].

In recent years, the term “cognitive toponymy” has become more widely used in the works of Russian and foreign scientists. Our task is to understand the rightfulness, expediency and validity of the appearance of this relatively new term.

Конференция «Ономастика в Смоленске и Витебске: проблемы и перспективы исследования» состоялась в СмолГУ

17 сентября в Смоленском госуниверситете состоялась традиционная международная научная конференция «Ономастика в Смоленске и Витебске: проблемы и перспективы исследования». В этом году мероприятие провели в смешанном формате: дистанционно и очно.

Организатором конференции выступила кафедра русского языка СмолГУ совместно с Витебским госуниверситетом имени П.М. Машерова.

Учёные из Смоленского госуниверситета, Смоленского государственного института искусств, Смоленской военной академии ВПВО, Смоленского государственного медуниверситета, Смоленской государственной сельхозакадемии и Витебского госуниверситета имени П.М. Машерова представили свои научные работы.

«В рамках конференции работало три секции: «Проблемы изучения ономастики приграничья» (в онлайн- режиме), «Вопросы топонимики» и «Имя собственное в тексте». Впервые после самоизоляции смоляне, представители Смоленской ономастической школы, хорошо известной в России и Беларуси, смогли собраться и обсудить ономастические проблемы и перспективы дальнейшей работы очно», – рассказала председатель оргкомитета конференции, профессор кафедры русского языка СмолГУ Инна Королева.

По итогам конференции издан сборник материалов, статьи участников размещены в электронной базе РИНЦ.

Toponymist Boris Moiseev is 95 years old!

On September 5, 2020, Boris Aleksandrovich Moiseev, a bright, original local historian, turned 95 years old. For more than 70 years, a scientist whose name is known far beyond the borders of our region, has been studying the toponymy and dialects of the Orenburg region. Graduate of the Pedagogical Institute B. A. Moiseev worked at his home university from 1958 to 1995. During this time, he collected the richest material, without which it is impossible to imagine either the history of the Orenburg region, or its linguistic component:

"Reader of Orenburg dialects" (2005),

"Orenburg Regional Dictionary" (1st edition, 2010),

monograph "Local names of the Orenburg region" (2013),

"Toponymic sketches of the Orenburg region" (2016),

and also published for the 100th anniversary of our university "Orenburg Regional Dictionary" (2019), which is the first and complete lexicographic fixation of the dialectal diversity of the Orenburg region.

The scientific activity of B. A. Moiseev confirms the perspicacity of V. I. Dahl, who assessed "the collection of supplies from a living language, not from books and without scientific references" as hard ascetic labor: "this is not the work of an architect, not even a bricklayer, but the work of a carrier his, but the work of a lifetime ", and" a lot still needs to be worked to reveal the treasures of our native word, put them in order and put a complete, good dictionary; but chambers are not built without carriers; many hands must be applied. " In 2013, addressed to B.A. Moiseev.

A letter of gratitude was sent, signed by the Director of the ILI RAS Academician N. N. Kazansky. In 2017, Boris Alexandrovich Moiseev became the laureate of the Regional Literary Prize named after I. PI Rychkova in the nomination "Artistic and Publicistic Work" for the book "Toponymic Sketches of the Orenburg Region". And in 2018, within the framework of the IV Ural interregional competition "University Book" (Yekaterinburg), Boris Aleksandrovich was awarded a diploma in the nomination "The best popular science publication in linguistics."

A congratulatory address from the rector of the university, Svetlana Aleksandrovna Aleshina, was presented to the hero of the day on his birthday by colleagues and students, Professor E. N. Bekasova and Associate Professor P. A. Yakimov.

К началу работы конференции планируется издать сборник материалов, который будет размещен в наукометрической базе РИНЦ (Российский индекс научного цитирования).

Условия участия и публикации материалов, а также сроки их предоставления и требования к оформлению будут сообщены в информационном письме № 2 (возможна грантовая поддержка), которое будет направлено в ноябре 2020 года.

I Jornada de Toponímia de Menorca (25-26 September 2020)

El Consell Insular de Menorca i l’Institut Menorquí d’Estudis organitzen la I Jornada de Toponímia de Menorca

Amb el títol de «Menorca nom a nom», els propers 25 i 26 de setembre tindrà lloc, al Llatzeret de Maó, la I Jornada de Toponímia de Menorca, organitzada conjuntament pel Consell Insular de Menorca i l’Institut Menorquí d’Estudis.

L’objectiu d’aquesta jornada és donar a conèixer el projecte i la metodologia de treball del Nomenclàtor de toponímia de Menorca iniciat ja fa onze anys, un projecte de recollida sistemàtica i normalització dels noms de lloc de l’illa que, després d’aquest temps, ha arribat a un punt d’inflexió important a causa de l’edat avançada de la gran majoria dels informadors i els problemes de finançament que posen en risc la seva viabilitat.

Per aquests motius, en aquesta jornada, oberta a tothom que estigui interessat en la toponímia de Menorca, s’explicarà quin és l’estat de la normalització de la toponímia a les Illes Balears, en relació amb el que es fa a Espanya i, més en general, a Europa i, en segon lloc, es pretén obrir un diàleg amb la societat menorquina sobre el present i el futur del projecte i sobre la necessitat de la participació ciutadana per aconseguir d’enllestir-lo.

Els ponents que participaran en la I Jornada de Toponímia de Menorca, que tindrà lloc en horari de capvespre al Llatzeret, seran Andreu Ramis, president del Consell Assessor del Patrimoni Cultural Immaterial de les Illes Balears; Xavier Gomila, investigador principal del Nomenclàtor; Ricard Cots, responsable de l’IDE Menorca, i Marc Rosés, cap del Departament de Cartografia de l’IDE-SGI.

A part de les sessions de divendres 25, les persones inscrites podran participar en una excursió toponímica programada per al dissabte 26 pels voltants del Llatzeret.

Abstract

The article analyzes the activity of the Ukrainian Onomastic Commission (UOC) since its inception — 1960 and to this day. It is specially noted the main directions of scientific and organizational work of this institution at the department of literature, language and art studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: the coordination of research on onomastics between different Ukrainian institutes; organization of conferences on various issues of onomastic theory and practice; consultations to the organs of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, ministries and departments of the republic for solving various practical problem that arise during the preparation of political division books, encyclopedias, dictionaries and geographic atlases, addressing issues of renaming streets and settlement names. The purpose and tasks of the published organ of the Commission — the bulletin «Report of the Ukrainian Onomastic Commission» are determined. It is deals with the composition of UOC in different periods of its activity. The importance of the further work of the Ukrainian Onomastic Commission and the prospects of its work is emphasized in view of the development of the Onomastic Science and the increasing interest in society in various aspects of the functioning of its own names.

We are seeking to recruit a post-doctoral Research Associate to the 3-year AHRC-funded project Iona's Namescape: place-names and their dynamics in Iona and its environs. 

The core of the project is a full place-name survey of Iona and Staffa; the project will also investigate the earliest records of Iona; the names of its monuments; how Iona's place-names relate to the neighbouring island of Mull; and issues of authority and authenticity relating to place-names and heritage. 

There will be extensive public engagement work, both with local communities and with the two heritage bodies most responsible for Iona, the National Trust for Scotland and Historic Environment Scotland.

The RA will work across the whole project, and alongside the Principal Investigator (Prof. Thomas Clancy) and the other team members: Prof. Katherine Forsyth (Co-Investigator), Dr Alasdair Whyte (Co-Investigator), Dr Mairi MacArthur and Gilbert Márkus (RAs) and Brian Aitken (Systems Developer). The RA will have primary responsibility for data gathering (including fieldwork), analysis, and data-base population; conference and KE event organisation; and editing an essay collection. The RA will be an author on the survey volume of Iona place-names, and will contribute to other outputs across the project, including papers / articles of their own or joint authorship. 

The post holder will be qualified to SCQF level 12 (PhD) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s) and have a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the field of onomastics, and specifically Scottish onomastics, as well as other fields relating to the research (e.g. Scottish history, insular religious history, etc.).

Ономастика Поволжья 2020

Названия городов, рек и улиц, псевдонимы, фамилии, торговые марки, произведения литературы и искусства, а также тысячи и тысячи других имен собственных. Всё это изучает наука ономастика. На этой неделе в Костроме прошел крупнейший российский форум ономатологов, на который съехались ведущие специалисты в этой области со всей России. Впервые за более чем полувековую историю форума, он проходил в нашем регионе - на базе Костромского госуниверситета.

- Это событие неординарное. Эта конференция всегда привлекала внимание общественности. В ней участвует восемь иностранных держав и множество городов, - рассказала Нина Ганцовская, доктор филологических наук, профессор Костромского государственного университета.

Общее количество существующих в мире имен и названий не поддаётся учёту. Разобраться в их невообразимом множестве и помогает наука ономастика. Она даёт ценнейший материал для историков и лингвистов, позволяет узнать - откуда появилось то или иное название, и как оно дошло до наших дней.

- Есть гидронимы — названия рек, есть ойконимы — названия населенных  мест. То есть всем этим и занимается ономастика. Наша конференция посвящена такого рода исследованиям, - объяснил доктор филологических наук, член-корреспондент Российской академии наук Сергей Мызников.

 

Организаторы признаются, что давно хотели провести форум именно на костромской земли. И вот, наконец, это случилось.

- Ну как не приехать в Кострому, красивый, древний город, который имеет такую богатую историю и так много здесь культурных памятников. Здесь прекрасные ученые, с которыми мы сейчас работаем. Есть к кому приехать, с кем поговорить, порадоваться нашему общему делу - развитию науки ономастики, - сказал Василий Супрун, доктор филологических наук, председатель оргкомитета конференции «Ономастика Поволжья».

Участники форума слушали выступления и доклады ученых на протяжении двух дней - 9 и 10 сентября. Коллеги-филологи успели обсудить друг с другом широкий круг вопросов, связанных с различными аспектами изучения русского языка.

The Valencian Language Academy has definitively suspended the Conference of Onomastics that should have been held on the 25th and 26th of September in Castelló de la Plana. The Onomastic Department has agreed to this second postponement due to the uncertain situation caused by the Covid-19.

У мережі з’явилась інтерактивна карта «Рідні», яка показує поширення прізвищ на території України, станом на довоєнні 2011-2013 роки.

Для того, щоб побачити, у яких регіонах проживають носії певного прізвища, треба ввести його українською мовою у спеціальному полі. В результаті, крім статистичних даних поширення, подається походження прізвища з низки етимологічних словників, згадки в деяких козацьких компутах та реєстрах, а також карта поширення прізвища на території Польщі.

Матеріали були взяті з архівів України і оцифровані. Про це повідомляють творці карти із товариства українських родовідників «Рідні».

– Весь Національний архівний фонд України в 680 архівних установах нараховує 37 млн одиниць зберігання. Знайти в числених каталогах архівні справи, стосовно населеного пункту ваших предків – справа рутинна і непроста. Протягом року ми працювали над оцифруванням і систематизацією різноформатних каталогів, щоб тепер мати можливість надавати зведений перелік джерел в короткий термін і в зручному форматі. Цей витяг ми називаємо джерельною довідкою, – розповідають творці.

XVIII Международная научная конференция "Ономастика Повольжья"

С 8 по 11 сентября 2020 года впервые в Костроме пройдет 

XVIII Международ-ная научная конференция "Ономастика Повольжья".

Традиционно, начиная с 1964 года, конференция проводится в городах России, расположенных в Поволжье, при финансовой поддержке Российского фонда фундаментальных исследований. По итогам работы XVII конференции, проходившей в сентябре 2019г. в Новгородском государственном университете имени Ярослава Мудрого,была принята резолюция и решение провести XVIII Международную научную конференцию «Ономастика Поволжья» в сентябре 2020 года на базе Костромского государственного университета.

В научном собрании примут участие более ста ономатологов–исследователей, занимающихся изучением собственных имен, из 13 стран (Польши, Сербии, Алжира, Болгарии, Македонии, Украины, Беларуси, Китая, Казахстана, Словакии, Турции. России, ДНР).

В ходе работы XVIII Международной научной конференции «Ономастика Поволжья» пройдёт обсуждение широкого круга вопросов, связанных с различными аспектами изучения имени собственного:

• теория и методология ономастических исследований;

• ономастическое пространство и ономастическое поле;

• общая топонимика;

• поволжская топонимика, микротопонимика и урбанонимика;

• антропонимика и этнонимика; • зоонимика;

• теонимы и мифонимы в поволжских этнокультурах;

• городское онимическое пространство;

• ономастическая периферия и апеллятивно-ономастическое пограничье;

• имя собственное в межъязыковом контексте, проблемы переводоведения;

• литературная и фольклорная ономастика;

• имя собственное в детской речи;

• языковая игра в ономастическом пространстве;

• ономастика и ономастическое краеведение в школе и вузе.

Session pour l’International Medieval Congress de Leeds "Onomastique à la lettre : jeux de noms et de lettres dans la littérature médiévale en français"

Proposition de session pour l’International Medieval Congress de Leeds (5-8 juillet 2021), suivie de la publication d’un dossier spécial dans une revue peer-review de littérature médiévale. 

La réflexion sur les noms propres est omniprésente dans la littérature du Moyen Âge : désireux d’arracher le patronyme à sa fonction d’identification pure, les poètes médiévaux semblent en effet vouloir lui offrir « une ‘remotivation’ phonique ou graphique qui n’a rien à voir avec son origine appellative » (Rigolot : 1977, p. 12). Plusieurs causes sont avancées par les spécialistes pour expliquer cet engouement onomastique : la tradition biblique de célébration du Nom de Dieu ; la perception antique du nom comme instrument heuristique et source de pouvoir ; la conviction, largement répandue au Moyen Âge, du caractère non arbitraire du signe linguistique et a fortiori du nom propre. Ce sont là autant d’hypothèses qui permettent d’analyser la sensibilité onomastique toute particulière de la littérature médiévale, depuis longtemps mise en lumière par la critique (cf. indications bibliographiques). 

Dans le cadre du présent appel, nous sollicitons des communications consacrées à un aspect spécifique et encore peu étudié de la question : le travail sur la lettre appliqué à la réflexion onomastique dans la littérature médiévale en français. De l’épellation du nom de Marie dans les Miracles de Nostre Dame de Gautier de Coinci au don de la lettre H du poète T(h)ibaut à sa dame (H)Annes dans le Roman de la Poire, des anagrammes sur le patronyme de Guillaume de Machaut à l’épellation du nom du cheval Fauvel dans le roman éponyme, les exemples de jeux sur le nom propre menés dans une perspective lettriste sont légion. Nous accueillons aussi bien des études de cas, favorisant la lecture rapprochée et l’analyse de détail des jeux lettristes, que des réflexions plus amples, destinées à inscrire la pratique onomastique lettriste dans son contexte historique et à en examiner les enjeux culturels, intellectuels et symboliques. 

Les propositions pour des communications de 20 minutes (en anglais ou en français) sont attendues pour le 15 septembre 2020 à l’adresse suivante : thibaut.radomme@unifr.ch Les organisateurs David Moos et Thibaut Radomme (Université de Fribourg – FNS) sélectionneront une série de propositions afin de constituer une session, qui sera soumise le 30 septembre 2020 au comité de sélection de l’IMC de Leeds (5-8 juillet 2021). La tenue de la session est évidemment conditionnée à son acceptation par le comité de sélection de l’IMC. Aucun financement n’est prévu par les organisateurs : pour toute proposition retenue, les frais de déplacement jusqu’à Leeds, de logement sur place et d’inscription à l’IMC sont à la charge de l’intervenant-e et/ou de son institution de rattachement. Une publication de la session est prévue dans une revue peer-review à l’issue de l’IMC : toute proposition de communication engage donc moralement son auteur-e à envoyer aux organisateurs la version écrite de sa communication pour le 1er septembre 2021. 

L’organisation de la session s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet FNS « Jeux de lettres et d’esprit dans la poésie manuscrite en français (XIIe -XVIe siècles) », dirigé par Prof. ord. Marion Uhlig (Université de Fribourg).
