Actuellement Ana Donnard (Professeure associée à l'Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, Brésil) travaille sur l'onomastique arthurienne à partir du texte du Chronicon Briocence - première source pour l'Histoire de la Bretagne armoricaine. C'est une évidence le fait qu'elle s'appuit sur les recherches des grands experts - l'Onomastique étant un travail de toute une vie en Linguistique Historique à la croisé d'autres disciplines comme la Mythologie Comparée, l'Histoire des textes et l'Archaeologie, ce qui doit se traduire par un savoir érudit de grande ampleur. Il s'agit ici donc d'une étude et d'un travail de collecte d'une bibliographie concernant l'onomastique des noms arthuriens bretons, parfois oubliés dans la série des recherches universitaires. En même temps l'étude du contexte historique de la Chronique de Saint Brieuc - Chronicon Briocence - et des discussions des historiens à propos de l'autorité du texte pour une histoire de la Bretagne fait venir à la superficie un topos un peu oublié dernièrement - l'existence d'une source en vieux-breton dont se serait servi Geoffroi de Monmouth pour construire son oeuvre majeure - HISTORIA REGUM BRITANIA. L'histoire obscure de la Bretagne armoricaine, de ses rois et saints fondateurs font aussi objet de discussion puisque c'est l'horizon historique de notre corpus.

Etant donné que la Bretagne armoricaine et le mythe arthurien s'inscrivent dans le sillon des Etudes Celtiques, une approche critique du celtisme fait aussi objet de son étude. Les controverses sur les Celtes, depuis la Renaissance, font la difficulté de ce champ d'études ayant d'innombrables pièges. Celtomanie, Celticité, Celtoïde. Voilà trois mots pour faire valoir tout une entreprise périlleuse.

4 - 5:30 pm. Conference 'L’onomàstica de la Torre de l’Espanyol, l’inventari' (Onomastics in Torre de l'Espanyol: the Inventory).

Conference given by Sílvia Veà Vila.

Abstract: Producing onomastic inventories is an urgent task today. With the move away from tilling the land in favour of other work, oral transmission of placenames is stifled and most toponyms could disappear alongside the last people who harvest the local lands. For this reason, work needs to get underway to collect and commit to paper all information at risk of disappearing shortly if nothing is done. This information is not just related to a few names, but rather refers to our language, landscape, history, society, worldview and a long list of other diverse areas of knowledge.

Onomàstica de la Torre de l’Espanyol, winner of the first Ramon Amigó i Anglès Research Award (2016-2018), came from a desire to preserve toponyms and anthroponyms in towns and cities in Catalan-speaking regions.

This presentation will look at how to produce an onomastic inventory, the work that the Ramón Amigó i Anglès Research Award wishes to develop and some of the toponyms and anthroponyms collected in the town of Torre de l'Espanyol, in Ribera d'Ebre county.

Областным управлением культуры, отделом ономастики 16 сентября   2021 года в здании «Ұлы Дала Орталығы» был организован областной круглый стол на тему «Латын графикасында Қазақстан азаматтарының тегі мен есімдерін дұрыс жазу».
         

Цель круглого стола - обсудить, как писать фамилии и имена на латыни, оказать методическую поддержку, обменяться мнениями, найти решения.

         В круглом столе приняли участие ученые Международного казахстанско-турецкого университета имени К.А.Ясави, специалисты по ономастике и языку из 17 районов, городские отделы культуры и развития языков.

Seminar "Onomastic space in the light of spiritual rebirth: achievements and the future" in Kazakhstan

On September 21, 2021, in the city of Zhitikara, Zhitikarinsky district, the Department for the Development of Languages of the Akimat of Kostanay region together with the public foundation "SANALY URPAQ" held a field seminar "Onomastic space in the light of spiritual revival: achievements and the future".

The main purpose of the event is to organize and conduct an analysis and research of the onomastic situation in the region, collect, systematize and organize information about historical toponyms, outstanding personalities of the region, develop proposals for restoring previously lost historical toponyms, study proposals for onomastic renewal.

The seminar was attended by members of the regional onomastic commission, heads and specialists of the departments of culture and language development of the akimats of the cities of Arkalyk, Rudny, Lisakovsk, Amangelda, Auliekolsky, Denisovsky, Zhangeldinsky, Zhitikarinsky, Kamystinsky, Karabalyk, Naurzumsky, Beimbet Maylin and Fedorovsky districts, scientists, local historians, media representatives.

During the seminar, scientists, local historians, specialists exchanged views and shared their experience on the issue under discussion.

Une nouvelle chaire UNESCO en toponymie inclusive

Une équipe internationale, dirigée par l’UNIGE (Université de Genève), va travailler sur les questions de nominations des lieux à l’échelle mondiale, en se penchant notamment sur les questions de genre, de visibilité des minorités et de développement durable.

Comment les lieux sont-ils nommés dans le monde? Par qui? Avec quels enjeux politiques, culturels, sociaux, mémoriels? Pour répondre à ces questions, des chercheurs/euses de l’Université de Genève (UNIGE) lance une nouvelle chaire UNESCO en toponymie inclusive: «Dénommer le Monde». Les objectifs? Rendre visible cette problématique –qui prend actuellement de plus en plus d’ampleur–, en expliquer les mécanismes, créer un espace de dialogue entre les académiques, la société civile et les opérateurs publics et privés, et inventorier de bonnes pratiques et recommandations en la matière. En effet, de ce qui semble n’être qu’une sousbranche de la linguistique découlent de nombreuses problématiques comme la question du genre, la visibilité des minorités, les langues et savoirs autochtones et le rapport à la colonisation. Durant les quatre prochaines années, l’UNIGE initiera un fonctionnement en Réseaux de partenaires autour de cette chaire, particulièrement avec l’Afrique et l’Europe pour les réseaux académiques, et avec des organisations internationales.

В ноябре 2018 года мы смогли по-новому взглянуть на науку и превратить научные собрания в уютные чаепития. Научно-популярный клуб «Занимательная ономастика» не даст вам заскучать, ведь у нас наукой можно заниматься танцуя, складывая оригами и играя в «Мафию». Вот уже четвёртый год мы встречаемся каждый месяц, пытаясь разгадать загадки имён собственных в теплой компании единомышленников. За это время мы успели отметить множество праздников, совершить виртуальное кругосветное путешествие и «нарисовать» портреты известных людей — и повсюду на этом пути нас сопровождала ономастика, наука об именах собственных.

Conference 'Les problemàtiques patronímiques a la Catalunya del Nord i la francesització dels cognoms (segles XV-XXI)'

4 - 5:30 pm. Conference 'Les problemàtiques patronímiques a la Catalunya del Nord i la francesització dels cognoms (segles XV-XXI)' (Patronymic Issues in Roussillon and the Francisation of Surnames [15th-21st Centuries]).

Conference given by Joan Peytaví Deixona.

Abstract: The presentation shall provide an historic overview of patronyms in Roussillon between the middle ages (when surnames were set) and the early 21st century. It will look at the assignation of patronyms, feminisation, double surnames and passing on surnames by women, amongst other specificities shared in many Catalan-speaking areas. There will also be a section explaining and illustrating how the change of state in the 17th century arising from the Treaty of the Pyrenees and the partition of Catalonia had repercussions on surnames not just from the 18th century. It will discuss how progressive francisation from the 19th century and subsequent linguistic break and replacement in the last third of the 20th century have changed the pronunciation of local and imported Catalan surnames in the last 100 years. In addition to identity problems, divergence and lack of knowledge of history and language, Catalan surnames from the beyond the Albera Massif have undergone changes in several ways.

Last year, the linguistic community commemorated the 100th anniversary of Professor Vincent Blanár - the "nestor" of Slovak linguistics and onomastics. His theory of proper name forms the basis of the Slovak onomastic school and is also known and used in the international context. Enjoy !!!

Multicultural Patronymic Landscapes of Naming in Russia, France, Germany, Great Britain and Romania

A couple of days ago, I got the book "Names and Naming / Multicultural Aspects" where the 9th Chapter has been written by your obedient servant ! Any comments are more than welcome! 

This chapter represents a contrastive study of the common Russian, French, German, British and Romanian patronyme-based surnames. The aim of the study is to elaborate and evaluate name-based materials for five countries in the form of statistical data, then to analyse and confront motive-related surname clusters and their percentages in order to determine naming patterns and name-giving properties. From this perspective, Romania is of greatest interest as this country is situated at the crossroads between East and West. The typological analysis of Romanian surnames may help resolve numerous questions.

Dr Frances Kane, The Northern Ireland Placename Project,

Dr Frances Kane is a Research Fellow who works to establish the linguistic origins of townland names and other historical names within The Northern Ireland Place-Name Project which has been based at the Celtic department at Queen's University Belfast since 1987. 

Her talk, entitled ‘Stair Cheilte na Logainmneacha - The Hidden History of Placenames’ will detail her current research, and explore the various historical events, linguistic developments and changes in the social context within which contemporary place-names in Ireland have been coined and used since earliest records began. This talk will be delivered in English.

Die 15. Tagung des Arbeitskreises für Namenforschung ist dem Rahmenthema

Namenforschung und Altertumskunde

gewidmet und wird am 7.-9. Oktober 2022 an der Universität Zürich ausgerichtet

Nebst wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Beiträgen zum Thema sind die Forschenden eingeladen, sich insbesondere zu folgenden Themenbereichen zu äussern:

• allgemein zu frühgeschichtlichen Namen der Antike, der Völkerwanderungszeit und des Frühmittelalters, insbesondere Personen-, Völker- und Ortsnamen, sowie fallweise auch zur rekonstruierten Vorgeschichte historisch überlieferter Namen.
• zu epigraphisch bezeugten Namen und ihrem besonderen Status, also etwa Namen, wie sie in der südalpinen Epigraphik, in Runeninschriften, Matroneninschriften oder allgemein der klassischen Epigraphik zutage treten.
• zu Fragen der alteuropäischen Onomastik im Sinne einer Bezugnahme auf Namen voreinzelsprachlicher Herkunft.
• zu interferenzonomastischen Phänomenen im oben skizzierten Zeitraum.

Willkommen sind darüber hinaus Beiträge, die mit einer archäologischen Perspektive auf den aktuellen Identitätsdiskurs zurückgreifen oder sich mit Fragen der ethnischen Kategorisierung archäologisch fassbarer Personengruppen auseinandersetzen.

Aufgrund des Tagungsorts sind Beiträge mit Fokus auf den historischen (rätischen) Alpenraum und seinen (romanischen, germanischen, keltischen, venetischen, rätischen und etruskischen) Namen und Namentypen besonders erwünscht.

Welcome to the website of the 28th International Congress of Onomastic Sciences!

The purpose of the congress is to advance academic research on names and naming by bringing together scholars from all over the world. The studies presented in the congress can represent various academic disciplines and categories of proper names.

The theme of the congress is Sustainability of names, naming and onomastics. The presenters are encouraged to evaluate how their work could promote the goals of sustainable development.

The congress is organized by the University of Helsinki, in collaboration with the University of Turku and the International Council of Onomastic Sciences.
