Dear readers, 

the current themed issue of Acta onomastica is this time dedicated to folk etymology in proper names. It includes thirteen papers dealing with toponyms (including urban toponyms), as well as analyses of personal names and a summary of terminology used in Czech onomastics. The National Newspaper (as of 12th June, 1906) stated that the etymology of toponyms was “a sad science with funny results”. Although we strictly disagree with the attribute ‘sad’ used here, we must admit that folk etymology does often come up with funny explanations. However, at the same time it also offers an important insight into the way the language users understand proper names and how they treat them. We hope this issue will contribute to further research into this unjustly neglected field of language and onomastics.

Personal Names in a Medieval Context

Our dearest colleague Prof. Valéria Tóth (Debrecen University, Hungary) published her brilliant work in English "Personal Names in a Medieval Context" (2022, 250 p., 978-3-96769-251-8.)

Abstract in English

The book studies general name theoretical questions and universal features of personal name giving and also provides a description of the personal name system of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. The chapters on name theory introduce a cognitive-pragmatic model that is suitable for the characterization of the anthroponym system of any language in any of its historical eras. In the chapters discussing the features of old Hungarian personal name giving and usage we can find a specific application of the theoretical model. 

The medieval Carpathian Basin provides an excellent opportunity for such an analysis for several reasons. On the one hand because this region was at the crossroads of languages and cultures in the Middle Ages and this also clearly influenced its anthroponym systems. On the other hand, the time period under scrutiny, the Middle Ages (and more precisely the Old Hungarian Era between 895 and 1526) witnessed the restructuring of the name system on multiple levels, including the appearance and ensuing dominance of personal names of a Latin origin as a result of the country becoming a Christian nation and the emergence of family names as a new personal name category. 

The book also provides a detailed overview of the historical process in which personal name categories and personal name types were built and relied on one another.

Prof. Valéria Tóth gave a talk about her book at the scientific conference organized as part of the Golden Bull 800 program series.

Dieses Buch behandelt einerseits allgemeine namenstheoretische Fragen und universelle Charakteristika der Personennamengebung und Personennamenverwendung, andererseits bietet es eine Beschreibung des Personennamensystems des Ungarischen Königreichs im Mittelalter. In den namenstheoretischen Kapiteln wird ein kognitiv-pragmatisches Beschreibungsmodell vorgestellt, das für die Darstellung des Personennamensystems jedweder Sprache in all ihrer Epochen geeignet ist. In den weiteren Kapiteln zu den Besonderheiten der alten ungarischen Personennamengebung und Personennamenverwendung ist die konkrete Anwendung des Beschreibungsmodells zu finden. 

Das mittelalterliche Karpatenbecken bietet für eine solche Analyse ein ausgezeichnetes Untersuchungsfeld. Zum einen galt diese Region als Sammelstelle von Sprachen und Kulturen im Mittelalter, was natürlich auch in den Personennamensystemen seine Spur hinterlassen hat, zum anderen ist die untersuchte Epoche, das Mittelalter (genauer die sogenannte altungarische Zeit, 895–1526) als das Zeitalter zu betrachten, in dem die Restrukturierung des Namensystems auf mehreren Ebenen zu sehen ist: Die Erscheinung und das rasche Dominantwerden der Personennamen lateinischen Ursprungs als Ergebnis der Einbindung in den christlichen Kulturkreis ist als einer dieser Prozesse anzusehen, während die andere große Veränderung die Entstehung der Familiennamen als neuer Personennamentyp darstellt. 

Im Buch wird auch der historische Prozess der Aufeinanderschichtung der Personennamenkategorien und Personennamentypen detailliert vorgestellt.

NORNA-symposium "Namn och konflikter" 2023

Namnforskarna i Uppsala bjuder härmed in till NORNA:s femtionde symposium med temat Namn och konflikter (14–16 november 2023). Det arrangeras gemensamt av Institutet för språk och folkminnen (Isof) och Institutionen för nordiska språk vid Uppsala universitet.

Att namn är något som binder ihop språk, länder, familjer, grupper, kulturer, företag osv. är något vi alla vet. Men namn och namngivning kan också bidra till konflikter – och i sig vara konfliktorsaker. Konflikter ska här ses i mycket vid mening; de kan vara yttre och inre, utsagda och outsagda, nutida och historiska, internationella, nationella eller personliga, mellan myndigheter och medborgare. Konflikter kan också finnas inom teori eller vetenskapshistoria liksom mellan olika belägg, tolkningar eller namnformer. Konflikter behöver inte innebära rättsprocesser; också konflikter i namnbruk, t.ex. om officiella eller inofficiella namn används, och synen på dem hos namnbrukarna, kan höra hit.

Studier där namn kan relateras till konflikter av någon form är varmt välkomna att presenteras på symposiet. Vi ser gärna presentationer även från namnintresserade inom andra forskningsfält.

Forskningen kan presenteras dels genom föredrag, dels (för studenter) i form av digital poster. Till varje föredrag beräknas 20 minuter + 10 minuter till frågor. Symposiet kommer även att innehålla två föredrag med särskilt inbjudna föreläsare. Dessa föredrag är också öppna för allmänheten. De digitala postrarna kommer att visas vid ett särskilt avsatt tillfälle med en presentation om 5 minuter.

Om du vill hålla föredrag ber vi dig sända in ditt abstrakt om max 300 ord senast 15 januari 2023 till e-postadress norna2023@isof.se dit också ev. frågor kan ställas. Föredragen kan hållas på danska, norska, svenska eller engelska. För en digital poster räcker en kortare presentation till samma adress. Besked om antagning lämnas i mars 2023. Ett andra utskick med en slutlig inbjudan inkl. preliminär deltagaravgift sänds ut i april 2023.

8th Panhellenic Onomastic Congress "Onomastics of the Peloponnese"

The Hellenic Onomastic Society is pleased to announce the decision of the Board of Directors to organize the 8th Panhellenic Congress, which will be held in Andritsaina (Peloponnese, Greece) with the organizational assistance and sponsorship of Administration of Western Greece Region, Public Historical Library of Andritsaina, Swiss Association of Friends of the Public Historical Library of Andritsaina, Olympia Province's Federation of Cultural Associations,Youth Association of Andritsaina "Parrasioi" and G. & F. Kanellopoulos Heirs Foundation .

The theme of the Congress is "Onomastics of the Peloponnese", which concern the names of the wider Peloponnesian Area (forenames, surnames, eponyms, toponyms, etc.), without excluding papers focused on broader theoretical onomastic points.

The overall objective of the congress is to promote the science of Onomastics in Greece and multiple possibilities for broader cooperation and interaction with such sciences as Ethnolinguistics, Classical Philology, Folklore, History, Archaeology, Literature, Linguistics, Geography, etc. The main aim of the congress is to collect, classify, analyse, study and present Peloponnesian names, which have not received the attention of researchers so far.

The Congress will be held at the Public Historical Library of Andritsaina from 28 to 30th  July 2023.

Researchers interested in participating at the congress are invited to submit electronically by 31 January 2023, through sending title and abstract (up to 200 words) of their paper, as well as their full name, title, contact telephone number and e-mail address, to the members of the organising committee:

Областной конкурс "Национальная ономастика - зеркало страны"

В Петропавловске состоялся областной конкурс "Национальная ономастика - зеркало страны". Он прошёл по инициативе регионального управления культуры, развития языков и архивного дела. Конкурс приурочили ко Дню Республики. В нем приняли участие специалисты, занимающиеся вопросами ономастики. Они разделились на команды и должны были интересно презентовать себя. Кроме того, участники конкурса давали характеристики разным населенным пунктам и их названиям.

— В прошлом году североказахстанская команда заняла 3 призовое место в аналогичном конкурсе, но уже республиканского уровня. Хочу сказать, что в нашей области трудятся очень хорошие специалисты. В рамках областного конкурса им предстоит пройти 5 испытаний. Одно из них будет на знание законов, связанных с ономастикой. Завершится конкурс викториной.

Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin / wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter

Die Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen sucht zum 1. Januar 2023 für die Forschungsstelle des Vorhabens „Ortsnamen zwischen Rhein und Elbe ‑ Onomastik im europäischen Raum“ in Münster eine wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin/einen wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter (w/m/d) (TV-L 13 100%). Die Stelle ist teilzeitgeeignet und zunächst befristet auf zwei Jahre mit der Möglichkeit der Verlängerung.

Die Aufgabe der Stelleninhaberin/des Stelleninhabers besteht im eigenständigen Verfassen von Ortsnamenartikeln für das Niedersächsische Ortsnamenbuch.

Voraussetzungen für eine Bewerbung sind:

• sehr gute Kenntnisse des Niederdeutschen, vor allem der älteren Sprachstufen des Niederdeutschen;
• gute phonologische und lexikalisch-semantische Kenntnisse der historischen Sprachstufen des Deutschen;
• gute Kenntnisse in der Onomastik;
• sehr gute Teamfähigkeit und die Bereitschaft zur intensiven Einarbeitung (sowohl eigenständig wie angeleitet) und zur Integration in den vernetzten Arbeitsprozess der Arbeitsgruppe;
• eine ausgeprägte Fähigkeit zur prägnanten Formulierung stark verdichteter Informationen auf knappem Raum;
• die Bereitschaft und Fähigkeit, sich zur Verifizierung der vorgenommenen Deutungen rasch in verschiedenste historische Themen einzuarbeiten;
• die Fähigkeit, sich rasch die makro- und mikrostruktuellen Vorgaben anzueignen und diesen entsprechend Ortsnamenartikel zu verfassen.

Eine Promotion ist wünschenswert, aber keine Voraussetzung. Wünschenswert sind weiterhin Grundkenntnisse der anderen germanischen Sprachen. Weiterhin sind (Grund-)Kenntnisse im Bereich der historischen Überlieferung (Editionen, Urkundenwesen etc.) erwünscht.

Project "The settlement names of the Canton of Zurich" completed

The research project "The settlement names of the Canton of Zurich", financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Charitable Fund of the Canton of Zurich, was completed on time on September 30, 2022. Since October 8, all name articles are now published on ortsnamen.ch. The end of the project was celebrated at the 15th meeting of the Arbeitskreis für Namenforschung at the University of Zurich (October 7-9, 2022).

Within two project phases, 3669 settlement names were recorded historically and analyzed linguistically within six years. The basis for this was formed by more than 35,000 critically examined historical documents, of which almost 28,000 were newly indexed, as well as phonetic transcriptions of the dialect pronunciations of the names. 

The project team (Inga Siegfried, Mirjam Kilchmann and Seraphin Schlager as well as Stefan Würth in the first project phase) was accompanied by a board of trustees (consisting of Hans Bickel, Elvira Glaser, Beat Gnädinger, Andreas Werner and Dölf Wild) during the entire project. Elvira Glaser (University of Zurich) and Martin Graf (Swiss Idiotikon) were in charge of the project.

Metaphor and Metonymy in Names

Abstract
Many names are descriptive, but the descriptions are often non-literal, drawing particularly on metaphor and metonymy. This lecture begins by outlining the most common types of metaphor in place-names, with examples of the LANDSCAPE IS A BODY and LANDSCAPE IS A CONTAINER metaphors. Both are highly productive in place-names as well as in ordinary language. However, some place-names are ambiguous between metaphorical and non-metaphorical interpretations, and the same applies to other types of names.

Using examples from The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland, the lecture discusses surnames from bird-names, animalnames and fish-names. In some instances, either a physical or behavioral quality of the creature is mapped onto the surname bearer; in others, the link is metonymic, with the animal, bird or fish representing an area of activity connected to the surname bearer. Many such surnames are ambiguous, potentially drawing on historical associations that are no longer recognised.

This problem is even more acute with regard to personal names, many of which are from the Bible and were created within an ancient culture very different from our own. Using examples from A Dictionary of First Names, the lecture discusses some of the main semantic fields represented in Biblical personal names, again with a focus on those based on terms for living creatures. Here it is particularly difficult to differentiate between metaphor and metonymy, although literal references to the same creatures within the Bible may throw some light on potential associations.

Finally, the lecture returns to place-names, identifying different types of metonymic formations and arguing that metonymy is more prevalent in place-names than has previously been recognised.

Le nom de guerre, qui était attribué au soldat lors de l’engagement, participa du « particularisme militaire » des armées françaises d’Ancien régime. 

Une analyse du registre d’admission l’Hôtel Royal des Invalides de 1670 à 1791 a permis de déterminer la fréquence, la typologie, les associations et l’évolution des noms de guerre des soldats adressés à l’Hôtel de sa création à la Révolution. Cette analyse, qui a permis de revisiter et de confronter à la réalité de ces sources certaines des idées véhiculées dans l’historiographie, s’est aussi voulue être une illustration de l’intérêt des méthodes quantitatives modernes pour appréhender un phénomène historique culturel et linguistique complexe.
