New project 'Carrick Names / Ainmean Charraige'
Ainmean Charraige/Carrick Names exists to shine a light on the fascinating variety of place and personal names in the Earldom of Carrick.
With significant cultural contributions to the Carrick onomasticon from Brittonic, Northumbrian, Gaelic and more recently the Scots and English languages, there is an impressive variety to get to grips with!
Gaelic place and personal names dominate, reflecting the length of time Gaelic was spoken (probably from c.900 to 1700 or so).
If you're available on 14 Sept - come along to the conference on 'Carrick's Gaelic Heritage'

Remembering Prof. Yuri Apresyan (1930-2024): A Linguistic Luminary and Advocate of Intellectual Freedom
Yuri Apresyan, a Soviet and Russian linguist, adorned with the title of Doctor of Philological Sciences and the prestigious position of a professor, left an indelible mark on the field through his multifaceted contributions. His scholarly endeavors spanned the realms of lexical semantics, syntax, Russian and English lexicography, the history of linguistics, machine translation, and beyond. As one of the architects of the "Meaning ↔ Text" theory and the head of the Moscow Semantic School, Apresyan reshaped our understanding of language structures and their semantic underpinnings.
However, Apresyan’s journey was not devoid of tribulations. His unwavering commitment to intellectual freedom and justice often placed him at odds with the prevailing political currents. His dismissal from the Institute of the Russian Language of the USSR Academy of Sciences under political pretexts stands as a stark reminder of the perils faced by scholars who dared to speak truth to power. Yet, undeterred by adversity, Apresyan continued to pursue his scholarly passions, leaving an indelible imprint on the fields of computer linguistics and theoretical semantics. The saga of Yuriy Apresyan’s life is not just a narrative of academic excellence; it is a testament to moral courage and principled dissent. Despite facing professional and personal hardships, Apresyan remained steadfast in his commitment to truth and justice. His open condemnation of Russia's incursion into Ukraine in 2022, articulated through an open letter signed by Russian scholars and scientific journalists, exemplifies his unwavering moral compass and commitment to ethical principles.
Throughout his illustrious career, Apresyan’s influence extended far beyond the confines of academia. As a revered educator, he imparted knowledge and wisdom to countless students, both in Russia and abroad. His lectures in prestigious institutions across the globe served as intellectual milestones, enriching the minds of aspiring linguists and scholars.
As we commemorate the life and legacy of Yuriy Apresyan, let us not only celebrate his scholarly achievements but also heed the lessons of his life. In an era marked by ideological strife and political tumult, Apresyan’s steadfast commitment to intellectual integrity and moral courage serves as a guiding light. May his memory continue to inspire future generations of scholars to uphold the noble ideals of truth, justice, and intellectual freedom.

Projekt „Erfassung mundartlicher Ortsnamen in Bayern“
The Names of the Gods in Ancient Mediterranean Religions
From Greece to Palmyra, Tyre or Babylon, the names of the gods, like 'Thundering Zeus', 'Three-faced Moon', 'Baal of the Force' or the enigmatic YHWH, reveal their history, family ties, fields of competence and capacity for action. Shared or specific, these names bring to light networks of gods: the Saviour gods, the Ancestral gods, the gods of a city or a family. Names tell stories about the relationship between men and gods, gods and places, places and cultures and so on. They show how gods travel and spread, how they appear and disappear, how they participate in the political, social, intellectual history of each community. Through the study of divine names, the twelve chapters of this book unfold a gallery of portraits that reveal the changing aspects of the divine throughout the ancient Mediterranean.

Honoring Navalny: 7 examples of Renaming Streets as Symbols of Courage and Democracy
In the wake of Alexei Navalny's tragic passing, the world has been captivated by his unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights. From the bustling streets of New York City to the diplomatic corridors of Ottawa, activists and politicians alike are mobilizing to immortalize his legacy through a simple yet profound gesture: renaming streets in his honor.
The Netherlands: A Symbol of Solidarity
In the Netherlands, activists are rallying to rename the street housing the Russian Embassy after Navalny. With over 66,000 signatures collected, the proposal to rename the street to "Alexei Navalny’s Street" is gaining traction. Despite potential political backlash, the initiative stands as a symbol of solidarity with Navalny's fight for justice and transparency.
France: Avenue Alexeï Navalny
The avenue Chantemesse in Paris, a street next to the Russian Embassy, will be named after Alexei Navalny, Lʼavenue Alexeï Navalny. Deputies of the 16th district of the French capital voted unanimously for the renaming. An art monument will also be placed at the intersection of two boulevards, in Navalnî's memory.
Germany: Rename Behrenstraße in Berlin to Alexei Navalny Street!
The Demokrati-JA e.V. launched the petition, which aims to pay tribute to the Navalny's fight for democracy, and to recognize in his person the immeasurable contribution to this fight of all victims of the Russian regime. They propose renaming the section of Behrenstraße between Glinka and Wilhelm Streets to Alexei Navalny Street. This section is home to the Consulate of the Russian Federation and the residences of Russian diplomats.
Romania: Proposal in Bucharest Council
The Bucharest branch of the USR party said it would propose to the capital's General Council a resolution that would change the name of Tuberozelor Street in District 1, which houses the consular section of the Russian Embassy, to Alexei Navalny Street. According to the party, this initiative represents an important step in support of democratic values and human rights, reaffirming solidarity with those fighting for freedom and justice worldwide. Citizens who support this project can sign the petition online here.
Malta: A Call for Liberty
In Malta, Foreign Affairs Shadow Minister Fenech Adam has proposed renaming Triq I-Ciefa, adjacent to the Russian Embassy, in honor of Navalny. Parliament's solemn minute of silence pays homage to Navalny's unwavering love for Russia and his steadfast dedication to liberty. This poignant gesture not only condemns authoritarianism but also serves as a reminder of Navalny's enduring legacy.
New York City: A Beacon of Resistance
In the heart of Manhattan's Upper East Side lies East 91st Street, home to the Consulate General of the Russian Federation. By renaming this street after Navalny, New Yorkers aim to send a powerful message of solidarity to those fighting against autocracy worldwide. This symbolic act stands as a testament to Navalny's courage and resilience in the face of oppression.
Ottawa, Canada: A Tribute to Bravery
In Ottawa, Ontario, a petition has been initiated to rename a segment of Charlotte Street, where the Russian Embassy is located, as "Navalny Street." This proposal, encompassing only the embassy grounds, serves as a poignant reminder of Navalny's bravery in the pursuit of democracy. By renaming this street segment, Canadians hope to honor Navalny's legacy and stand in solidarity with those advocating for freedom and human rights.
A Global Tribute
These efforts to rename streets in honor of Alexei Navalny transcend geographical boundaries and political affiliations. They represent a global tribute to a man who fearlessly fought against injustice and oppression. Each renamed street serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the enduring power of courage and the universal desire for liberty.
