Call for papers by ICA/IGU Commission on Toponymy

Dear colleagues,
The International Geographical Union (IGU) organizes 4-6 June 2018 in Moscow [Moskva] a Thematic Conference on “Practical Geography and XXI Century Challenges” (http://www.igras.ru/100igras/en/), which will also be dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) - the largest and oldest geographical research organization in Russia.
In accordance with the general theme of the conference, our Joint ICA/IGU Commission on Toponymy invites you to a session titled “Use of place names in public space”. The session will analyze the use of place names (toponyms) on signposts in front of populated places, on street signs, (official) buildings, traffic signposts along roads and motorways, railway stations and airports in different countries and different parts of the world.
More specific questions in this context are:
· Are endonyms or exonyms preferred?
· To which extent are minority names respected?
· Are versions in other scripts offered?
Based on these empirical findings the session could proceed also to questions like:

· What is the rationale behind these various usages?
· What does this handling with place names in public space mean for the reader, for the local population, for visitors and tourists?
· What do place-name changes mean for name use?
· What does the use or non-use of official place names tell us about space-related attitudes of the inhabitants?
· Are there other (non-official) names in parallel use?
· How do place names in public space, e.g. street names, become official?
· Who is involved in the decision? Is it a top-down or a bottom-up process?
· What do place names in public space tell us about political disposition and attitudes of the given society?
Please, register for the conference and submit your abstract by 15 January 2018 via the conference website (http://www.igras.ru/100igras/en/). You will also find all specifications (length of the abstract etc.) there.
We are looking forward to a scientifically rewarding session covering various aspects of our topic.
I use this opportunity to thank you all for your dedicated work in the field of toponomastics and especially your contributions to our Commission in this year and wish you – in the names of our IGU Commission Chair Cosimo Palagiano and our Common Vice-chair Paulo de Menezes a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
With kind regards
Peter Jordan (ICA Commission Chair)

Call for papers: Namenkunde und Niederdeutsch (VndS-Tagung 2018)

Verein für niederdeutsche Sprachforschung

131. Jahrestagung des Vereins für niederdeutsche Sprachforschung (VndS) vom 21. bis 24. Mai 2018 in Kiel

Call for Papers

Call for Papers for colloquium session on Applied Onomastics at AAAL 2018

American Name Society

This is a call for participation in a colloquium session on Applied Onomastics at AAAL 2018, to be held in Chicago, IL, March 24-27, 2018. Names figure prominently in our identities and interactions as individuals, families, groups, organizations, and societies. Factors as varied as geography, culture, socioeconomic status, legal constraints, and marketing strategies influence names and naming. The study of names (onomastics), including personal, place, and commercial names, among others, is both multi- and interdisciplinary. Because of the ubiquity and important functions of names, they are also of “enduring interest to the wider public” (Hough 2016), confirmed by the long tradition of collaboration between academics and non-academics in name studies. The aim of this colloquium is to demonstrate how onomastics can offer practical solutions and insights to issues encountered in a wide range of contexts. Proposals are invited on any topic relating to Applied Onomastics, including but not limited to:
names and education
names and media
names and lexicography / name dictionaries
onomastic aspects of marketing and tourism
onomastic aspects of language planning
name-related policies, regulations and laws
onomastics and forensic linguistics
onomastics and psychology or cognition
name-based data mining and technologies
names and bi/multilingualism
cross-cultural naming practices
societal trends in naming
the relationship between Applied Onomastics and Applied Linguistics
the aims of Applied Onomastics as a field
Please send proposals containing a title, key words, abstract (300 words), and brief summary (50 words) by July 10th, 2017 to Maryann Parada (mparada1 AT csub.edu). the Colloquium Organize. Notifications will be sent by July 20th, 2017.

Call for papers “Naming Rights and the Cultural Landscapes of Neoliberal Urbanism”

Hi all,

The call-for-papers below is especially relevant to those studying the politics of urban place naming, so please do consider submitting an abstract.

Cheers

*******************************************************************************************
CALL-FOR-PAPERS

Special Issue to be Submitted to Urban Studies:
“Naming Rights and the Cultural Landscapes of Neoliberal Urbanism”

Guest Editors:
Reuben Rose-Redwood, University of Victoria
Jani Vuolteenaho, University of Turku
Craig Young, Manchester Metropolitan University
Duncan Light, Bournemouth University

From the First Gulf Bank Metro Station in Dubai, UAE, to the 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre in Tampa, Florida, a growing number of city and state governments around the world are selling the naming rights for public infrastructure and civic facilities to corporations and wealthy elites. Proponents argue that the sale of naming rights offers an innovative strategy to generate municipal revenue without raising taxes, whereas critics maintain that naming rights programs commercialize, and thus erode the democratic value of, public spaces. Since the selling of naming rights has been a commonplace practice in the realm of professional sports for decades, it is not surprising that a sizable body of literature has examined naming rights sponsorships for sports stadia and recreational arenas (e.g., Boyd 2000; Bartow 2007; Leeds, Leeds, and Pistolet 2007; Blackshaw 2012). Yet, despite the proliferation of municipal naming rights policies in recent years, very little urban scholarship has critically examined the use of naming rights as a spatial strategy of neoliberal urbanism (Rose-Redwood, Alderman, and Azaryahu 2010; Rose-Redwood 2011; Medway and Warnaby 2014; Light and Young 2015).

The proposed special issue seeks to contribute to critical urban studies by examining the political economy and cultural politics of urban naming rights. The broader aim of this special issue is to explore how neoliberal policies are remaking the cultural landscapes of contemporary cities through the privatization of the spatial identities of public places. In doing so, our aim is to bring together political-economic scholarship on entrepreneurial urbanism and the neoliberal city (Hackworth 2007; Ward 2008) with contemporary research in critical toponymy on the cultural politics of place naming (Berg and Vuolteenaho 2009).

We are particularly interested in showcasing scholarship that examines any of the following themes:

· political struggles over the planning, adoption, and implementation of urban naming rights policies, programs, or agreements

· economic outcomes of urban naming rights programs in cities of varying sizes

· the cultural reception of commodified place names in everyday speech and the spatial imaginaries of everyday urban life

· the relation between urban naming rights and broader processes of neoliberal urbanization

We welcome both in-depth case studies and comparative urban analyses as well as submissions that advance critical theorizations of naming rights from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.

Abstract Submission: If you are interested in contributing to this special issue, please submit your name, affiliation, paper title, and a 200-word abstract to redwood@uvic.ca by no later than August 15.

Once all abstracts have been received, a full Special Issue Proposal for this theme issue will be submitted to the journal, Urban Studies.

Call for papers for Onoma 52 "Asian Onomastics"

by Sungjae CHOO

Guest editor, Onoma 52

Asian Onomastics

(Onoma 52)

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

Dear colleagues,

I have the honor to be invited by the editorial board of Onoma as the guest editor of its volume 52, which will specially be devoted to onomastics in Asia. I was informed that this special volume would be parallel with Onoma’s continuing orientation toward the ‘global.’ I believe most of you remember the special volume ‘African onomastics,’ specially edited for volume 44 in 2009.

There are diverse and a wide range of specificities in Asian onomastics. The East Asian culture area, including Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, and even Vietnam have used the Han () characters developed in the continental East Asia for their distinct spoken languages. Therefore, their names, either of places or of persons, share many things in common. The Southeast Asian region, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, have developed their own naming culture, based on their unique languages and cultural heritages.

This volume, titled ‘Asian Onomastics,’ intends to encompass all the interests related to names in Asia. A mere introduction of the nature and characteristics of names in Asia would be itself an attractive subject, but I hope to receive articles with more focused topics such as:

·          linguistic composition and characteristics of names,

·          cultural heritages mirrored in the naming,

·          perception on the place and its name,

·          contests, conflicts and disputes on naming,

·          economic issues in naming,

·          research methodologies in the Asian onomastics, and

Listing these topics does not disqualify colleagues from suggesting additional topics. I expect the list to be plentiful with them.

Call for Papers: The Names Institute (May 7, 2016)

http://www.americannamesociety.org/call-for-papers-the-names-institute-new-york-may-7-2016/

Call for Papers: The Names Institute

The Names Institute was founded by the late E. Wallace McMullen at Fairleigh Dickinson University and directed by him for a quarter of a century. It then continued under the direction of Wayne H. Finke at The City University of New York.

It will in 2016 hold its 55th annual meeting at Baruch College (CUNY) the first Saturday in May.

All linguists, professional and amateur, are invited to attend. The Names Institute is interested in papers of all kinds on any aspect of personal names, place names, names in literature and commerce—names of all sorts. In 2016 it is hoped that the geolinguistic aspects of names, nationally and internationally, will be featured.

To mark the 40th anniversary of The Names Institute, Wayne H. Finke & Leonard R. N. Ashley edited selected papers published as A Garland of Names on literary onomastics, names in business, personal name trends, toponymics (including names in the Lewis  & Clark  expedition), etc.

Information on the upcoming 55th annual Names Institute from:

Professor Wayne H. Finke
Modern Languages B6-280
Baruch College (CUNY)
New York, NY  10010-5585
wayne.finke@baruch.cuny.edu

and proposals for papers to be read at this meeting are to be sent to Professor Finke, preferably by e-mail, with a 150-word abstract of a 15-minute paper on any aspect of names and naming, theory or practice.

Come and enjoy New York City in the Spring and participate  on May 7, 2016 at Baruch in a long-established, friendly scholarly conference.  The deadline for the submission of abstracts is April 15, 2016 but early submissions are definitely encouraged.  Why not act now?

Call for Papers for the Modern Language Association (MLA) Conference, Philadelphia, PA, January 5-8, 2016

ANS Panel at the Modern Language Association Conference

January 5-8th, 2016 in Philadelphia, PA

The American Name Society invites proposals for a panel under the theme of “Names and Multilingualism.” Multilingual and multicultural communities have been developed since the ancient world. The linguistic and cultural contacts within these communities have attracted the interest of a broad range of disciplines, where in some cases different strands have emerged. Personal as well as place names (i.e. anthroponymy and toponymy, respectively) mirror the interactions and the subsequent changes in those communities, thus modern scholarship often emphasizes their significance.

We encourage submissions pertaining to this topic from diverse perspectives, drawing evidence from literature, material culture, oral tradition, etc. of any period or area. Papers may deal with any aspect of naming, e.g., personal names, place names, corporate or trade names, name theory, etc. Submissions for interdisciplinary approaches are most welcome.
Proposal submission process:
  1. Proposals should include a title and abstract up to 350 words.
  2. Proposals should be sent via email attachment (PDF format) to Andreas Gavrielatos [a.gavrielatos@ed.ac.uk] with “MLA proposal” in the subject line. Please, include the Title, Name of Speaker, Affiliation and email address in the body of the email and NOT in the abstract.
  3. Proposals must be received by 5pm GMT on 13 March 2016. Proposers will be notified of results soon thereafter, following blind review of proposals.
  4. Panelists must be members of both MLA and ANS in order to present.
  5. For questions, please contact Andreas Gavrielatos at the email address above.
