Almaty's Furmanov Street renamed into Nursultan Nazarbayev Avenue

KazInform

After a careful consideration together with the city and republican onomastic commissions Almaty maslikhat, decided to rename one of the main streets of Almaty, Furmanov street after the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan during a regular session today, Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazinform correspondent reports.
Almaty mayor Bauyrzhan Baibek said that along with proposals to rename 112 streets with repeating names, Almaty's onomastic commission received a large number of appeals from intelligentsia, NGOs, and general public, especially, young people to rename one of the main streets after the founder of independent Kazakhstan and the country's first President, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
In his speech, the mayor noted the farsightedness of the President's decision to move the capital to Astana, which allowed Almaty to develop as the country's financial center. According to Bauyrzhan Baibek, this and the economic reforms initiated by the Head of State, stimulated private businesses and the development of the entrepreneurial spirit in Almaty, turning it into the regional magnet and the largest metropolitan area in Central Asia.
Bauyrzhan Baibek also said that it was a logical choice to give the President's name to a street in Almaty, since it is Almaty where many historical decisions were made, including on the adoption of Kazakhstan's Constitution, national currency, the creation of the country's Armed Forces, approval of state symbols, and closure of the Semipalatinsk test site.
In turn, maslikhat deputies added that through his initiatives, the Head of State, raised Kazakhstan's prestige on the international arena and that this decision was a long-awaited one, praising Nursultan Nazarbayev's efforts in reaching stability, ethnic harmony and peace in the country.

It should be noted that Jordan's Amman and Chechen Grozny were the first to name streets after Kazakh President 10 years ago. Nursultan Nazarbayev streets also exist in several cities in Turkey and Tatarstan's capital, Kazan.

But amid concerns from estate agents that an innuendo-laden address could cause your house price to slump, a backlash is taking place from those who wish to protect England's quirky heritage.

"If you changed the names, you would lose a lot of our social history," said Dr Paul Cavill from the Institute of Name Studies at the University of Nottingham.
"Besides, some modern names can be quite bland."
But do you know your Fanny Hands from your Grope Lanes? Take our quiz and find out.

Butthole Lane, in Shepshed, Leicestershire, and Butt Hole Road, in Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, have meanings that stem from:

Саратовцы проголосуют за новое название улицы Сакко и Ванцетти

http://www.vzsar.ru/news/2015/03/13/saratovcy-progolosyut-za-novoe-nazvanie-ylicy-sakko-i-vancetti.html

Most common street names by country in Europe

http://jakubmarian.com/most-common-street-names-by-country-in-europe/

Out of linguistic curiosity, Jakub Marian started looking up the most common street names in various countries. The following map shows those he has found so far.
However, Jakub Marian was unable to find data for most European countries. If you have a source for any of the countries that are not yet included in the map, he would be grateful if you let him know. When he finds data for more countries, he will also translate the names into English.
Being a mathematician, Jakub also tried to gather the data algorithmically using OpenStreetMaps Overpass API, but it doesn’t seem to be easily doable, because there are no entries for streets, just paths with names, and one street may consist of many different paths in the database. The actual sources used in the map are here.

Council stirs up wasps’ nest in road name row

COUNCIL officials have been accused of trying to “sanitise” a Yorkshire town by refusing to name a road ‘Wasps Nest Close’ because it “conjures up mental connotations of stinging and danger”.

COUNCIL officials have been accused of trying to “sanitise” a Yorkshire town by refusing to name a road ‘Wasps Nest Close’ because it “conjures up mental connotations of stinging and danger”.
Residents in Mirfield put forward the name for a housing development on the former Wasps Nest pub in an area which has historical references to wasps.
But a Kirklees council spokesman said it would “much prefer to find a name that has nothing to do with any sort of insect” and the developer agreed.
The council put forward Kings Head Court and Heathfield Court as alternative.
Councillor Kath Taylor accused the council of trying to sanitise the area, adding: “If developers are wanting to come in they ought to respect our history.”
The area was named Wasps Nest years ago when a magistrate made reference to the type of people living there, according to Councillor Martyn Bolt who said: “There are loads of strange names and I think they should retain historic links otherwise you risk developers sanitising the area.”
Local estate agent Paul Keighley of Bramleys said: “If the house is good quality the street name is irrelevant. In Huddersfield there is Wasp Nest Road and many other odd names such as Squirrel Ditch, Dykes End and Spa Bottom. Historic names should be kept and I cannot see any reason why the reference to Wasp Nest would have an adverse effect on sales.”
A Google search reveals a Hornets Nest Road in Maryland, USA, a Mosquito Road in Kent and Bumble Bee Road in Arizona.
Amy Wray, MD of Applegate Properties in Holmfirth, agreed with the council’s stance, saying Wasps Nest Close was not an attractive name.
“I have personally dealt with a lot of new homes over the years and the name was always a very important part of the whole process.”

Renaming streets to honour Robbie Williams

Another permanent legacy of next month’s celebrations will be the naming of three streets in honour of the music star at a new housing development led by Sanctuary Group in Middleport and developed by Seddon Construction.
Later this year you’ll be able to visit Angels Way, walk down Candy Lane or take a stroll down Supreme Street.
Finally, on the day of the pop star’s birthday (Feb 13), schools across the city will be marking it with a ‘Robbie Day’ – the details of which have yet to be finalised but are certain to include musical and arts-based activities for children of all ages.

Streets of Stavropol will get their old names back

In Stavropol, for more than two years names of city streets are at issue. A number of scholars and historians came out for returning to their original names when the locality and the streets were identified on the grounds of the people living there or of the names of prominent citizens. Three years ago, Stavropol, like many other Russian cities, has lost the status of the historic city. That decision was taken in 2010 by the Government and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. And now, in order to regain that status , Stavropol has to show the presence of the surviving monuments of history and integrity of the historical and cultural city environment. The return of ancient names to the streets will be the first step in this effort and will help, according to a number of citizens, Stavropol to return historical roots and even affect the consciousness of citizens.

The names of streets and squares are a part of the urban organism, like its architecture, levelling, public gardens and parks. Historians believe that the very fact of the deprivation of his ancestral names has an impact on its history. A misguided replacement of old established names could be compared with the demolition of historic monuments.

Age of renaming had been started immediately after the 1917 revolution, but it peaked especially in 1937: when by the decision of the city authorities with " one fell swoop " 250 streets got their new names. The interesting lack of names can be seen in the fact that there were several Stavropol streets with the same name, for example, six Yezhov streets (!!!). The last major event for renaming was undertaken in 1957, when the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR adopted a decree " On the Regulation of the name-giving of state and public figures to the territories, regions, districts, cities and towns, enterprises, collective farms, institutions and organizations". At that time, in Stavropol 19 streets had been renamed by removing the names of the previously revered figures such as Mikoyan, Budennyi, Voroshilov ... As a result, for just half a century not only the complete erasure of the historical names took place, but many of the streets were renamed several times. For instance, the Karl Marx prospect was being renamed 12 times (first, Nikolayevsky Prospect, to honour the coming of the Emperor Nicholas II of Russia, then Stalin Prospect, etc.)!!! (quoted from Nikolay Okhonko, director of the Stavropol State Historical and Cultural and Natural Landscape Museum named after N. Prozritelev and GK Prave, SmartNews)

Of the nearly 300 historic, mostly original street names that have emerged to the 20s of the XIX century, only 23 survived. This kind of city "depersonalization" should be considered as terrible! In all Soviet cities the same streets were to be found))))).

Of course, return to the everyday life of the old names of the streets will help the city "to speak the historical language." But, on the other side, what about the simple citizens accustomed to the names which are familiar from childhood? Holus-bolus to study the history of the city to avoid being lost?

Well, the citizens have various opinions and can't take oneway decision.

«Кривые» топонимики
Грань допустимой условности перейдена окончательно, ведь название улицы – вещь не только символичная, но и вполне конкретная: честь и уважение к конкретному событию или человеку.

The Origin of Moscow Street Names (part 1)

The territory of modern Moscow has long been occupied by men. In Shchukin, in Lyalov on the Klyazma river, in Davydkov, on the river Setun, in Dyakov, in the Kremlin and in many other places, archeologists discovered ancient settlements. The names of these settlements did not reach us, most likely because of a lack of documentation. The most ancient names were given at a time when the city was only at its beginning. They got their name due to the characteristics of the area: its vegetation, its soil, its rivers and spring water, etc. Some of these names have survived up to nowadays.
Go on:

The Origin of Moscow Street Names (part 1)

Russia’s most popular street names announced

Illogical names in Moscow: from the "Baumanka" to the Miklouho-Maclay Street
