Names in Focus: An Introduction to Finnish Onomastics

A new book on onomastics has been recently published by three beautiful Finnish scholars !

"Names in Focus: An Introduction to Finnish Onomastics"

by Terhi Ainiala ( well-known Finnish onomastician, Research Institute for the Languages of Finland, University of Helsinki)

                                                http://www.kotus.fi/index.phtml?s=3240

On the ICOS 23 in Canada she has presented "Slang Toponyms in Early Twentieth Century Helsinki" with a co-author: http://www.google.de/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=8&ved=0CF4QFjAH&url=http%3A%2F%2Fyorkspace.library.yorku.ca%2Fxmlui%2Fbitstream%2Fhandle%2F10315%2F4047%2Ficos23_1030.pdf&ei=xavlUJ3LJsHNtAbS24CQBA&usg=AFQjCNG6AJS2p73J673cB1mXZexUa5QGiw&sig2=yUa76vxPrNThajfM0hRNZA&bvm=bv.1355534169,d.Yms&cad=rja
She has also contributed in 2008 with a chapter “Socio-onomastics” in Handbook of Pragmatics, Östman, Jan-Ola and Jef Verschueren (eds.). You may enjoy her new article "Place Names and Identities: The Uses of Names of Helsinki" (2012, in OSLA, Vol.4, No.2): https://www.journals.uio.no/index.php/osla/article/view/306

Minna Saarelma  (Docent at the University of Helsinki)

I don't know why but her name is written wrong on Amazon and its "off-springs":  http://www.amazon.de/Names-Focus-Introduction-Finnish-Onomastics/dp/9522223875http://www.bookworld.com.au/book/names-in-focus-an-introduction-to-finnish-onomastics/37288784/http://www.whitcoulls.co.nz/book/names-in-focus-an-introduction-to-finnish-onomastics/39199901/). She is author of "Nimi lapselle" (2007) (I suggest translating like: "Name of the Child"), "Nimipäiväjuhlat" (2006) (I would translate into English as: "Name Day Celebrations") and "Edhina Ekogidho - Names As Links: The Encounter Between African And European Anthroponymic Systems Among the Ambo People in Namibia" (2003). The latter represents her academic dissertation : http://ethesis.helsinki.fi/julkaisut/hum/suome/vk/saarelma-maunumaa/. Now she is Minna Saarelma-Paukkala: http://almanakka.helsinki.fi/npt2012s/nimitutkija.html.

and Paula Sjöblom (Docent, lecturer at University of Turku, School of Economics)

On Amazon websites her name is written without Umlaut((((. I have read her "9 Finnish company names. Their structure and functions". This article is concerned with Finnish company names and their structure and functions. It is based on the author’s dissertation (2006).

I must add that all together they have already published one work titled "Nimistontutkimuksen Perusteet" in 2008 (what I would translate as "Onomastic criteria"). ISBN: 9789517469920 (Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura).

And finally, the abstract of their new book:

This book delves deep into the vast field of Finnish onomastics, covering place names, personal names, animal names, commercial names and names in literature. It provides the history and current trends in this area of research, and also supplements international terminology with the Finnish point of view on the subject. Brimming with examples and clear explanations, the book can be enjoyed by the most adamant of researchers or those who just have a genuine interest in the study of names.
