This book addresses the issue of functions of literary proper names. The main aim is to present and organise the state of the research and propose a new methodological approach to the matter. The main issues that are addressed in this thesis include: the functions of literary proper names that have been identified and defined and the methods on which their identification was based; a theoretical approach to the discussed issue that allows a complete and coherent analysis; an application of the new approach that shows its applicability. The proposed approach is named "The Theory of Two Acts" as it is based on the act of naming and the act of using the name. After discussing all aspects of the theoretical approach, three novels: "Waterland" by Graham Swift, "The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents" by Terry Pratchett and "The Silkworm" by Robert Galbraith are analysed to show how the theory should be applied. These particular books were chosen not only because they include different amounts of fictional worlds, but also because these works present the reader with sets of names that fascinate, amuse and move. If you study names or if you like reading novels and while doing so you notice characters' proper names, this book is for you.
