Where we live abounds with traces of Gaelic and other cultures in our placenames and surnames. How many of us know that Derry this and Bally that are not nonsensical concepts, but rather tell us much about the history, geography and mythology of this island. Similarly, we may not have given any thought before to the origins of our surnames – which are Irish, Scottish, Huguenot, English and Viking. Wouldn’t it be exciting to find out from where the various strands of our family originated? Well you can do it now, by joining this workshop.

This course describes and explains the character of the place-names of Ulster in relation both to linguistic developments and to changes in the social context within which our local names have been coined. Students will examine various influences which have shaped our contemporary names, develop skills in place-name analysis and become familiar with typical resources used in Irish place-name study.
