In this video, I talk about why the pronunciation of people’s names matters, focusing on the example of students’ names in educational contexts. I consider reasons why people’s names might get mispronounced and how it makes people feel when their names are said wrongly. I argue that capturing the experiences and practices of students, and of teaching and professional services staff, regarding the pronunciation of students’ names, can contribute to the development of higher education that is more inclusive and non-discriminatory.
