New Officers of the Philippine Toponymy Society

During its 10 March 2025 meeting at the University of the Philippines Baguio, the Philippine Toponymy Society (PTS) elected the following officers.  The society was organized by Assoc. Prof. Roderick C. Javar, PhD of the UP Los Baños on 8 December 2020 as a research group to produce a refereed book on the status of Philippine toponymic studies. Their seminal works were realigned on 19 July 2021 as papers in the toponymy panels at the virtual Philippine International Quincentennial Conference (PIQC) (November 2021), under the auspices of the now-defunct National Quincentennial Committee.

Instead of disbanding, the group agreed to organize itself into a society in a meeting at Los Baños, Laguna, on 11 October 2023, with Dr. Javar serving as the officer-in-charge. Their maiden project was the development of their PIQC conference papers as refereed chapters for Volume 4 of the 1521 Revisited book by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, spanning from 2021 to 2024, although the research agenda had been established in 2020.

The PTS envisions expanding its membership by involving various scholars, both local and foreign, who have already produced and are continuously working on toponymy in different parts of the country. To further contribute to the awareness and advancement of the Philippine toponymic heritage, now protected under Republic Act No. 11961 (Amended National Cultural Heritage Act of 2023), we have set up this Facebook page. We are also launching a refereed academic journal on Philippine toponymy soon.

Toponymy (Filipino: Toponima) is a methodological study of the origin of place names using various disciplines. To decode the meaning of our inherited place names is to understand the world of our ancestors.
