Ready for the 1st Interonoma: International Congress of Onomastics

The Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) will host the 1st Interonoma – International Congress of Onomastics, bringing together 200+ participants from 15 countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, plus researchers from 19 Brazilian states. The goal is clear and timely: to examine how names shape social life, from legal rights and identity to memory, migration, and technology.

Highlights & research axes

• Anthroponymy & social diversity: naming among trans, Indigenous, quilombola, and migrant communities; the legal–political dimensions of the right to a name.

• Toponymy & collective memory: place names in traditional communities, Brazilian cities, Indigenous territories, and Lusophone Africa.

• Onomastics in sign languages (Libras): a signature strand on name signs, institutional signs, and bilingual toponymy (Portuguese–Libras), with Libras interpreting to ensure accessibility.

• Literary/fictional onomastics: the symbolic and narrative functions of names in literature and culture.

• Onomastics & education: classroom practices, educational games, and didactic projects for teaching personal and place names.

• Indigenous onomastics: documentation and preservation of names as linguistic–cultural heritage in Brazil and Latin America.

• Onomastics & technology: databases, digital tools, and innovative apps for genealogy and historical linguistics.

Roundtables will address the social impact of names among minority groups, in sign languages, within migration, and in Portuguese-speaking African societies, with experts from Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Spain, Finland, the United States, and beyond.

Why it matters: Interonoma fills a historical gap - Brazil has not previously had a congress devoted exclusively to onomastics, unlike countries with established events such as ICOS and ICONN. Hosting the inaugural edition underscores UFMG’s and O-onoma’s strategic role in internationalizing linguistic research and promoting linguistic and sociocultural diversity.

A UFMG receberá o 1º Interonoma – Congresso Internacional de Onomástica, reunindo mais de 200 participantes de 15 países da América, Europa, África e Ásia, além de pesquisadores de 19 estados brasileiros. O congresso debate como os nomes estruturam a vida social, do direito ao nome e da identidade à memória, à migração e à tecnologia.

Destaques & eixos temáticos

• Antroponímia e diversidade social: nomes de pessoas trans, indígenas, quilombolas e migrantes; dimensões jurídicas e políticas do direito ao nome.

• Toponímia e memória coletiva: nomes de lugares em comunidades tradicionais, cidades brasileiras, territórios indígenas e regiões africanas lusófonas.

• Onomástica em línguas de sinais (Libras): foco em nomeação em Libras, sinais-nomes institucionais e toponímia bilíngue (Português–Libras); haverá interpretação em Libras, garantindo acessibilidade.

• Onomástica literária e ficcional: funções simbólicas e narrativas dos nomes em obras literárias e culturais.

• Onomástica e ensino: experiências didáticas, jogos educativos e propostas pedagógicas para o ensino de toponímia e antroponímia.

• Onomástica indígena: preservação de nomes como patrimônio linguístico e cultural no Brasil e na América Latina.

• Onomástica e tecnologia: bases de dados, ferramentas digitais e aplicativos inovadores voltados à genealogia e à linguística histórica.

As mesas-redondas discutirão o impacto social dos nomes em grupos minoritários, nas línguas de sinais, nos processos migratórios e nas sociedades africanas de língua portuguesa, com especialistas do Brasil, Angola, Moçambique, Espanha, Portugal, Finlândia, Estados Unidos e outros países.

Por que é importante: o Interonoma nasce para preencher uma lacuna histórica — até agora, o Brasil não contava com um congresso dedicado exclusivamente à onomástica, ao contrário de países com encontros consolidados, como os congressos do ICOS e a ICONN. A iniciativa reafirma o papel estratégico da UFMG e do O-onoma na internacionalização da pesquisa linguística e na promoção da diversidade linguística e sociocultural.
