Portal of the Contemporary Croatian personal names

The portal was created based on the Dictionary of Contemporary Croatian Personal Names, which was developed at the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics as part of the project Database of Contemporary Croatian Personal Names. The starting point for creating the dictionary was the database of official personal names with data on the number of bearers of each name. This data was obtained from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and is presented according to the 2011 Census of the Republic of Croatia, which recorded a population of 4,284,889. At that time, 5,563 names with more than ten bearers were confirmed, while names with fewer than ten bearers are not published to protect personal data. In the Dictionary of Contemporary Croatian Personal Names, names with one hundred or more bearers from this database are included. Among names with fewer than one hundred bearers, those that are culturally significant (e.g., Abraham, Aron, Ahmed, Aisha, etc.) and those needed to define names with more than one hundred bearers are included.

Structure of the Dictionary Entry

Based on the definition of a personal name as a sociolinguistic sign, each dictionary entry contains the following information:

1. Personal name in canonical form: The personal name is presented without marked accent because various accent realizations of certain names are confirmed in Croatia (Ìvana – Ivȁna, Ànīta – Anȉta, Màrija – Marȉja). Indicating the accent in the standard language would imply prescriptiveness, which is not the intention of this dictionary. Therefore, names such as Srečko, Svijetlana, Stijepan, Zvijezdana are not defined from the perspective of the norm.

2. Genitive and dative forms of the name

3. Definition of the name: The definition consists of a grammatical part, identifying the name as male or female, and a descriptive part. The descriptive part of the definition determines the origin of the name, whether native or foreign. Names that are not primary are defined as "shortened from," "derived from," "based on a male/female name," with multiple definitions possible. The oldest foreign names are defined according to the cultural circles they originate from, such as saintly, biblical, biblical-saintly, and Muslim.

4. Etymology: Etymology is provided for the primary names, usually in a short, formalized form. Where necessary, more than one etymology is provided.

5. Data on the number of bearers and frequency qualification

6. Sociolinguistic data on the name: Although this is a dictionary of contemporary personal names, since the name is a sociolinguistic sign, in addition to frequency and geographical distribution data (based on data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics on the most common names in Croatian counties during the 20th century), historical data on the time and, less frequently, the place of the first confirmation are provided. The oldest confirmations of names form the basis for diachronic anthroponomastic research.

   This part of the dictionary entry also includes explanations of the motivation for naming and linguistic data on the name, such as etymology details, intermediary languages, folk etymologies, etc., and mentions translational comparisons of names, either actual or derived from folk etymological connections.

7. Name equivalents in foreign languages: According to the dictionaries listed in the sources and literature, etymological equivalents for English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Slovenian, Russian, Macedonian, and Serbian are provided. Reflections in other languages show the spread of a particular name and the cultural circles it belongs to.

8. Name days: In the past, the calendar principle was one of the main reasons for choosing a name, which consequently, among other things, affects the frequency of a particular name in a given period. Recent research has shown that the calendar principle is still present.

The American Name Society is now inviting proposals for papers for its next annual conference. The one-day event will be held virtually via Zoom, allowing for the attendance of onomastics scholars from around the world. The 2025 ANS conference will not be held in conjunction with the Linguistics Society of America conference.

Abstracts in any area of onomastic research are welcome: personal names, place names, business and institutional names, names theory, names in literature, among others.

Proposals require these elements:

• Title of proposed paper
• 250-word abstract
• Shorter 100-word abstract suitable for inclusion in conference program
• 50-word biography suitable for inclusion in conference program

Der Verband für Orts- und Flurnamensforschung in Bayern e.V. hat als Aufgabe, die bayerischen Orts- und Flurnamen zu sammeln und wissenschaftlich auszuwerten. • Überprüfung und Erstellung von Transkriptionen
• Bewertung der Transkriptionen nach basisdialektalen Kriterien
• Einarbeitung der Transkriptionen in ein Datenbanksystem
• Ansprechpartner bei Nachfragen seitens der Werkvertragsnehmer zur Transkription
• Mitwirkung an Projekteinführungen/Schulungen

Remembering Prof. Yuri Apresyan (1930-2024): A Linguistic Luminary and Advocate of Intellectual Freedom

In the annals of linguistic history, the name Yuri Apresyan stands as a beacon of erudition, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. Born in 1930 and departing from this world today in 2024, Apresyan’s life journey not only encapsulates the evolution of linguistics but also serves as a testament to intellectual courage in the face of political adversity.

Yuri Apresyan, a Soviet and Russian linguist, adorned with the title of Doctor of Philological Sciences and the prestigious position of a professor, left an indelible mark on the field through his multifaceted contributions. His scholarly endeavors spanned the realms of lexical semantics, syntax, Russian and English lexicography, the history of linguistics, machine translation, and beyond. As one of the architects of the "Meaning ↔ Text" theory and the head of the Moscow Semantic School, Apresyan reshaped our understanding of language structures and their semantic underpinnings.

However, Apresyan’s journey was not devoid of tribulations. His unwavering commitment to intellectual freedom and justice often placed him at odds with the prevailing political currents. His dismissal from the Institute of the Russian Language of the USSR Academy of Sciences under political pretexts stands as a stark reminder of the perils faced by scholars who dared to speak truth to power. Yet, undeterred by adversity, Apresyan continued to pursue his scholarly passions, leaving an indelible imprint on the fields of computer linguistics and theoretical semantics.

The saga of Yuriy Apresyan’s life is not just a narrative of academic excellence; it is a testament to moral courage and principled dissent. Despite facing professional and personal hardships, Apresyan remained steadfast in his commitment to truth and justice. His open condemnation of Russia's incursion into Ukraine in 2022, articulated through an open letter signed by Russian scholars and scientific journalists, exemplifies his unwavering moral compass and commitment to ethical principles.

Throughout his illustrious career, Apresyan’s influence extended far beyond the confines of academia. As a revered educator, he imparted knowledge and wisdom to countless students, both in Russia and abroad. His lectures in prestigious institutions across the globe served as intellectual milestones, enriching the minds of aspiring linguists and scholars.

As we commemorate the life and legacy of Yuriy Apresyan, let us not only celebrate his scholarly achievements but also heed the lessons of his life. Namensrecht wird künftig flexibler

Der Doppelname für Eheleute, der Namenswechsel für Kinder im Falle einer Scheidung - all das wird durch die Reform des Namensrechts leichter. Der Bundestag stimmte für die neuen Regelungen. Bis die in Kraft treten, dauert es aber noch.

Wer seinen Namen etwa bei Heirat oder Adoption ändert, bekommt mehr Entscheidungsfreiheit. Mit den Stimmen der Regierungsfraktionen SPD, Grüne und FDP stimmte der Bundestag für eine Reform des Namensrechts. Auch die Unionsfraktion und die Linken-Gruppe votierten dafür. Die AfD stimmte gegen die Reform.

Mit den neuen Regelungen können Paare einen Doppelnamen als Familiennamen bestimmen, der dann auch für die Kinder als Geburtsname gilt. Bislang musste bei einer Heirat der Name eines Ehepartners als künftiger Familienname gewählt werden oder beide Ehepartner behalten ihren eigenen Familiennamen bei.

Eine Ausnahme gilt, wenn bereits einer oder zwei Doppelnamen vorliegen - dann darf nur einer der beiden Bestandteile in einen neuen Doppelnamen einfließen. Der Doppelname wird in der Regel mit einem Bindestrich getrennt, außer das Paar entscheidet sich gegen eine solche Trennung.

Das reformierte Namensrecht soll Anfang Mai des kommenden Jahres in Kraft treten. Ein Grund für die lange Vorlaufzeit ist die notwendige Umstellung in Behörden und Standesämtern. Wenn die neue Regelungen wirksam werden, sollen auch Ehepaare, die bereits einen Ehenamen tragen, die Möglichkeit bekommen, sich für einen Doppelnamen zu entscheiden.

Wechsel der Nachnamen von Kindern erleichtert

Kinder von Paaren können nach deren Heirat auch in Zukunft den Nachnamen eines Elternteils tragen, aber auch einen Doppelnamen erhalten. Erreichen die Kinder die Volljährigkeit, können sie selbst entscheiden, ob sie statt des erhaltenen Namens des einen Elternteils künftig auch den Namen des anderen führen wollen oder einen Doppelnamen aus beiden elterlichen Namen annehmen. Zudem sollen sie einen Doppelnamen kürzen können.

Auch im Falle einer Scheidung können Kinder durch die Reform künftig zu dem Nachnamen des Elternteils wechseln, bei dem sie leben. Ähnliche Regelungen gelten für Stiefkinder. Im Fall einer Adoption einer oder eines Volljährigen entfällt künftig die Pflicht zur Namensänderung.

Rechte von Minderheiten stärker berücksichtigt

Im reformierten Namensrecht werden auch Traditionen von anerkannten Minderheiten stärker berücksichtigt. Ein Beispiel sind vom Vornamen eines Elternteils abgeleitete Nachnamen, wenn ein Kind der friesischen Volksgruppe angehört - etwa der Nachname "Jansen", wenn der Vorname des Vaters "Jan" lautet.

Auch an das Geschlecht angepasste Formen des Nachnamens werden ermöglicht. Das gilt etwa im Fall der sorbischen Volksgruppe für die Anfügung der Endung "-owa" bei Frauen. "Unsere Leute können jetzt so heißen, wie sie wirklich heißen". Die neuen Regelungen seien notwendig, da das geltende Namensrecht gerade im internationalen Vergleich sehr restriktiv sei und "aufgrund der vielfältigen Lebenswirklichkeit der Gegenwart den Bedürfnissen von Familien nicht mehr gerecht" werde, heißt es in dem neuen Gesetz. 

Bundesjustizminister Marco Buschmann lobte die Reform. Sie mache "das möglich, was sich viele Menschen seit langem wünschen", betonte der FDP-Politiker. Viele Familien, Paare und Kinder hätten auf eine Modernisierung des Namensrechts gewartet. Auch Stefan Seidler vom Südschleswigschen Wählerverband (SSW), der die dänische und friesische Minderheit vertritt, sieht in den neuen Regelungen den richtigen Schritt - gerade mit den neuen Möglichkeiten für Angehörige von Minderheiten. "Unsere Leute können jetzt so heißen, wie sie wirklich heißen", so Seidler.

Die CDU stellte sich zwar prinzipiell hinter die Reform, kritisierte jedoch, dass diese hinter den Erwartungen zurückbleibe. Das Namensrecht werde verkompliziert, was im Widerspruch zum Ziel des Bürokratieabbaus stehe, sagte der CDU-Abgeordnete Carsten Müller.

Neialwaraad, Bawaschding und Oidda sind alles Dialektformen bayerischer Ortsnamen. Und sie sind viel mehr als einfach nur skurrile Bezeichnungen, denn sie verraten auch jede Menge über die Kultur- und Siedlungsgeschichte. Darum hat man an der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften ein umfangreiches Projekt gestartet, sammelt möglichst viele Ortsnamen in Mundart, dokumentiert sie und versucht sie so vor dem Vergessen zu bewahren.

Das Projekt „Erfassung mundartlicher Ortsnamen in Bayern“ hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, Tonaufnahmen aller 56.000 Ortsnamen im Freistaat zu machen und diese auf einer im Netz abrufbaren Karte darzustellen.

From Greece to Palmyra, Tyre or Babylon, the names of the gods, like 'Thundering Zeus', 'Three-faced Moon', 'Baal of the Force' or the enigmatic YHWH, reveal their history, family ties, fields of competence and capacity for action. Shared or specific, these names bring to light networks of gods: the Saviour gods, the Ancestral gods, the gods of a city or a family. Names tell stories about the relationship between men and gods, gods and places, places and cultures and so on. They show how gods travel and spread, how they appear and disappear, how they participate in the political, social, intellectual history of each community. Through the study of divine names, the twelve chapters of this book unfold a gallery of portraits that reveal the changing aspects of the divine throughout the ancient Mediterranean.
