A Historic Event: The First SdO Colloquium in Andorra
The Catalan Onomastics Society (Societat d'Onomàstica, SdO) will hold its 51st Colloquium in Encamp (Andorra) on May 8-10, 2026. This will be the first colloquium that the SdO has organized in Andorra since its founding in 1980 by Enric Moreu-Rey, making this event a historic milestone for the association.
The event is made possible thanks to the involvement of the Government of Andorra and has the collaboration of the Comú d'Encamp (Encamp Parish Council) and the Institute for Catalan Studies.
Themes: Pyrenees, Relief, and Water
The colloquium aims to be an opportunity to promote interest in Andorran toponymy and anthroponymy, to encourage research on Andorran place names and personal names, and to enhance the value of onomastics as intangible heritage.
The three thematic lines of the colloquium are:
🏔️ Pyrenean toponymy and anthroponymy
⛰️ Positive relief toponymy (mountains, hills, peaks, etc.)
💧 Hydronymy (names of rivers, lakes, springs, streams)
These themes reflect the unique geography of the Pyrenees and offer the opportunity to study names deeply rooted in mountain territory and culture.
Call for Papers: Deadline March 15, 2026
Interested researchers can submit paper proposals until March 15, 2026 to info@onomastica.cat.
Requirements:
- Abstract: Between 500 and 2,000 characters
- Content: Title and abstract of the paper
- Personal information: Name, surname, email, and phone number
Priority will be given to proposals that:
✓ Fit the thematic focus
✓ Are original and unpublished
✓ Offer innovation

From ancient pre-Roman substrates to medieval Romance development, Andorran place names offer rich material for linguistic, historical, and cultural analysis.
The emphasis on positive relief toponymy (mountains, peaks, slopes) and hydronymy (rivers, lakes, springs) reflects the geographical reality of Andorra, where topography and water have fundamentally shaped both settlement patterns and naming practices.

Un esdeveniment històric: el primer col·loqui de l'SdO a Andorra
La Societat d'Onomàstica (SdO) celebrarà el seu 51è Col·loqui a Encamp (Andorra) els dies 8, 9 i 10 de maig de 2026. Aquest serà el primer col·loqui que l'SdO celebra a Andorra des que va ser fundada l'any 1980 per Enric Moreu-Rey, fet que converteix aquest esdeveniment en una fita històrica per a l'associació.
L'esdeveniment és possible gràcies a la implicació del Govern d'Andorra i compta amb la col·laboració del Comú d'Encamp i l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans.
Temàtiques: Pirineus, relleu i aigua
El col·loqui vol ser una oportunitat per fomentar l'interès per la toponímia i l'antroponímia andorranes, per incentivar la recerca sobre els noms de lloc i de persona d'Andorra i per potenciar el valor de l'onomàstica com a patrimoni immaterial.
Les tres línies temàtiques del col·loqui són:
🏔️ Toponímia i antroponímia pirinenca
⛰️ Toponímia de relleu positiu (muntanyes, turons, pics, etc.)
💧 Hidronímia (noms de rius, llacs, fonts, torrents)
Aquestes temàtiques reflecteixen la geografia singular dels Pirineus i ofereixen l'oportunitat d'estudiar noms profundament arrelats en el territori i la cultura de la muntanya.
