Mapping the toponymy of Great Britain - density of common place name forms and their origins 🗺️
Toponymy is the study of place names, and the place names of Great Britain - as well as being often hilarious - are actually so interesting. Following hundreds of years of invasions and settlements, Britain's place names have really diverse origins and influences including brythonic dating back to the 6 BC, Latin from the roman era, saxon old English, Old norse and French.
Regional celtic languages such as Welsh, pictish, Scottish gaelic and cornish also have a huge influence on certain areas.
These maps show the density of place names with certain common forms, and the origins of these.

ReplyDeleteI find maps like this fascinating. Would you mind if I posted them to Reddit r/mapporn?
I'll link back to here and list you as the creator of course.
Thanks
Of course, you can do it. But I am not the creator. I borrowed it from Insta, the link is above, under the title.
