Elixio Rivas (1925-2022)
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of the Co-Founder of the Galician Association of Onomastics (AGOn, Asociación Galega de Onomástica, 1999) and of its Honorary President (since 2002) Paúl Elixio Rivas Quintas at the age of 97 who can be considered as one of the most important scholars of Galician toponymy in recent decades. He was recognized with the Otero Pedrayo Award (1980), the Castelao Medal (2000) and the Gold Medal of the Province of Ourense (2019).
Born in Fondo de Vila (Xunqueira de Ambía), he had a degree in Philology and his thesis "Toponymy of Marín" (defended in 1982) is part of the beginning of modern Galician Placenames studies. Elixio Rivas has been Member of the Commission of Toponymy of Galicia since 1978 and corresponding member of the Royal Academy of History. He worked as a professor at the universities of Santiago and Vigo. He was part of the group responsible for the preparation of the current Nomenclátor de Galicia, a work in which Galician toponymy was updated and standardized after many centuries of distorted transmission. History will also remember him for his ethnographic and lexicographic contributions.

Bibliography of Belarusian microtoponymy
An electronic bibliography of Belarusian microtoponymy has recently become available on the https://microtop.philology.by/. Items in this bibliography can be sorted by region and district. In addition, an interactive map and statistics are provided. The data for the bibliography was prepared in the Department of Dialectology and Linguogeography of the Yakub Kolas Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The aim of the project is to estimate how many microtoponyms have already been researched and analysed, in which areas of Belarus and to what extent such material has been collected.
As of September 2022, the total number of items in the database is 520. The chronological range of publications in the bibliography is 1959–2021. At this stage, only items that have been published in Belarus, have localised material and contain three or more microtoponyms were taken into account. Publications dealing with toponyms from archival sources and ancient manuscripts were not included in the database. Historical items and publications on folklore and ethnography, which sometimes also contain microtoponyms, were not included in the database as well.

Call for ANS Officers
Seeking New ANS Officers for 2023
Ever thought about getting more involved with the American Name Society? Here is your opportunity! The American Name Society is currently looking for a few good people who are interested in joining the Executive Council. Starting in 2023, new officers will be needed to fill the positions of Vice President and Allied Conference Coordinator.
Vice President (2023-2025)
The person elected to this position is primarily responsible for co-organizing the ANS annual conference in close cooperation with the ANS President. As conference co-chair, the person in this position will issue an official call for papers, organize a team of reviewers, design the program of paper presentations, and coordinate with the Linguistic Society of America and the other linguistic affiliates or “Sister Societies”: the American Dialect Society (ADS), the Society of Pidgin and Creole Linguistics (SPCL), the Society for the Study of Indigenous Languages of the America (SSILA), The Association for Linguistic Evidence (TALE), and the North American Association for the History of Language Sciences (NAAHoLS). In addition to these duties, the VP also serves as a voting member of the Executive Council and, as such, is actively involved in the legislative process of the ANS. The person selected for this office has the option of running for the office of ANS President, at the end of his/her term. Candidates for this position are expected to have superior organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
Allied Conference Coordinator (2023-2025)
The person elected to this position is principally responsible for organizing the ANS session at the annual conference of the Modern Language Association. This activity involves issuing a call for papers, assembling a team of abstract reviewers, selecting three authors whose work will be presented at the MLA conference, and coordinating the presentation of the three winning abstracts with the MLA administration. In addition to these duties, as a voting member of the ANS Executive Council (EC), the Allied Conference Coordinator participates in the legislative decision-making of the Society.
Although the term of service for this position is for two years, the holder of this office may be reelected pending approval by the EC. Given the fact that this position requires close communication with the MLA, candidates who have a demonstrated expertise in literary onomastics will receive preference.
To apply for one or more of these Executive Council positions, please fill out the application form here: https://www.americannamesociety.org/about/app ly-to-be-an-ec-officer/.
SNSBI autumn conference 2022

New Anglophone Editor in Chief of Onomastica Canadiana Journal
Dr. Ingram earned PhD at Carleton University where she undertook an interdisciplinary study on Iroquoian Place Names. She is interested in semiotics and semantics across differing epistemologies and their use in knowledge exchange, and the semantics of place, landscape and environment. Much of this is explored in her current work, which seeks a holistic form of cultural and linguistic documentation and revitalization through cartography. Dr. Ingram is currently Associate Researcher at Carleton University's Geomatics and Cartography Research Centre.
