Applications are invited for the above post in the School of English.  The successful applicant will work under the direction of Dr Jayne Carroll with her and with other colleagues to support research impact activity within the Institute for Name-Studies and contribute to research and publication on the place-names of Shropshire and Staffordshire. He or she will also support grant-writing to fund further research in this area.

Candidates must have a successfully completed PhD in onomastics, English or another language, history, linguistics, archaeology, historical geography or other appropriate subject.  Candidates should also have proven research skills in onomastics or a closely related historical discipline and skills in medieval and early modern palaeography.

This part time post, 18 hours per week, will be offered on a fixed term contract from 01 August 2018 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to 31 July 2019.

The Research Fellow will be part of the Leverhulme Trust-funded project, Travel and Communication in Anglo-Saxon England (T&C). The project is a collaborative venture between the Institute of Archaeology at University College London, and the Institute for Name-Studies at The University of Nottingham. The post will be based in the Institute for Name-Studies (INS) within the School of English at Nottingham (INS: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/ins).

The project teams archaeologists, historians, and place-name scholars in investigating travel and communications in Anglo-Saxon England. The project aims to reconstruct the overland route-system (and its intersections with the riverine route-system) of Anglo-Saxon England, using textual, landscape-archaeological, and onomastic evidence, thus characterizing travel in Anglo-Saxon England at a national scale. Through detailed case-studies it will analyse route-system in relation to selected material culture and commercial infrastructure, and it will incorporate a broad interdisciplinary study of the experience of travel, investigating, for example, navigation, travellers’ sensory perceptions and their consciousness of the ideological and folkloric aspects of the landscapes through which they travel. Its outputs will include a GIS-generated publicly-accessible Online Atlas of the Anglo-Saxon route-system, co-authored journal articles, and a co-authored monograph. 

The post-holder will be responsible for the linguistic, onomastic, and literary elements of the project, and will compile, analyse, and make available this data relevant to travel and communications and related activities. The post will involve extensive collaboration with the other project partners. 

Applicants must have a PhD (or one near to completion) in Onomastics, English, History, Linguistics, Archaeology, Historical Geography as well as experience of working with place-names, either as a postgraduate or postdoctoral researcher. 

This is a full-time, fixed-term post from 1 November 2014 to 31 October 2017 and based in the School of English, Trent Building, University Park.
