A book about surnames that can be read in one breath

Recently, a very interesting book-study titled "Surname among the Macedonians" was published in the "Menorah" edition. The author, Dr. Elka Jacheva-Ulcar, is our famous Macedonian onomastician. Although it is a professional study, it reads effortlessly, like any interesting book. The book is enriched with numerous examples of surnames, many of which belong to famous public figures. In this conversation, I was interested in the research process, the motivation behind it, and whether there will be more additions.

You recently published the book 'Surnames among the Macedonians,' which provides interesting information about the origin, meaning, and method of formation of surnames in Macedonia. Since when have you been dealing with the topic of surnames?

– The topic of surnames began to occupy me about fifteen years ago, shortly after my doctorate in 2005 on a topic from the other main onomastic branch, toponymy (Toponymy of the Tikvesh Region). I remember that my first work related to surnames was a comparative essay, later published in a collection of articles entitled 'Macedonian-Croatian Literary, Cultural and Linguistic Connections' (2007), which dealt with parallels in surname patterns among Macedonians and Croats. Over the years, I often returned to this topic through separate articles, and the sum of these, along with some more recent insights, led to the creation of this book.

Prof. Trajko Stamatoski (1925-2021), Head of the Macedonian Onomastic Department

On the 2nd April 2021, at the age of 95, prof. Dr. Trajko Stamatoski died because of COVID-19 in Skopje.

Prof. Stamatoski was born on May 6, 1925, in Skopje. He was a linguist, longtime director of the Institute for Macedonian Language "Krste Misirkov" in Skopje. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy (first generation of the Macedonian language group) in Skopje (1950), honorary doctor of philological sciences at the University "St. Cyril and Methodius ”- Skopje. 

He was a lecturer-editor and head of the Program Department of Radio Skopje (1946–1954), translator in Tanjug (1947–1948) and collaborator (1954–1986), head of the Onomastic Department (since its foundation in 1966), an area which was also his specialty. 

Later, he was a scientific advisor and director (1973-1986) of the Institute for Macedonian Language "Krste Misirkov". In Radio Skopje he was the founder, editor and collaborator of the show "Macedonian language through history and practice" (1951-1962). 

Studied in Poland (1958) and Czechoslovakia (1961). He was the editor of the magazines "Literaturen zbor" (1961–1976), "Onomastica yugoslavica" (1969–1982), "Makedonski jazik" (1970–1984) and the founder and editor-in-chief of the magazine "Makedonistika" (1977–1985). In addition, he was president of the Macedonian Translators' Association (1955–1956), secretary of the Macedonian Language Society (1956-1958), secretary of the Macedonian Slavic Committee (founded 1968–1988) and president of the Association of Slavic Societies of Yugoslavia. (1979–1982). He is the author of several books and about 500 professional and scientific articles.

Among the more significant works whose author is prof. Dr. Stamatoski also singles out “The Tetovo City Speech (1956–1957); "Dictionary of the Macedonian language, volume I"; "The Graphic System in Macedonia in the 19th Century (1970); "Struggle for Macedonian Literary Language" (1986); "Macedonian Onomastics" (1990); "Dictionary of surnames among Macedonians, volumes I (A-L) and L (M-sh)" (1994 and 2001); "Swedish-Macedonian Dictionary" (1995); "The Continuity of the Macedonian Literary Language" (1998); "Macedonian-English Dictionary" (1998); "The Language of Names" (2000 - co-author with Marinko Mitkov); "In Defense of the Macedonian Literary Language" (2001); "On Onomastic Themes" (2002).

Stamatoski has been the President of the Macedonian Language Foundation "Nebregovo" since its founding (2001), which publishes works related to the life and work of Blaze Koneski, but also for the defense of the Macedonian language at home and abroad.

Prof. Dr. Trajko Stamatoski was the honorary president of the football club "Vardar", and before that he was a longtime member of the Vardar leadership and as such was the editor-in-chief of the Monograph published in 1987, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the most trophy Macedonian football club.

Денеска, на пладне, на 95-годишна возраст почина проф. д-р Трајко Стаматоски, кој беше последниот жив македонист од првата генерација македонисти на проф. Блаже Конески. Стаматоски почина од последици на болеста КОВИД-19, за што во последните денови беше хоспитализиран и во ГОБ „8-ми Септември“ – Скопје.

Проф. Стаматоски е роден на 6 мај 1925 година, во Скопје. Тој беше лингвист, долгогодишен директор на Институтот за македонски јазик „Крсте Мисирков“ во Скопје. Дипломирал на Филозофскиот факултет (прва генерација на групата Македонски јазик) во Скопје (1950 година), почесен доктор по филолошки науки на Универзитетот „Св. Кирил и Методиј“– Скопје. Бил лектор-уредник и началник на Програмското одделение на Радио Скопје (1946–1954), преведувач во Танјуг (1947–1948) и соработник (1954–1986), раководител на Одделението за ономастика (од основањето 1966), област која му беше и потесна специјалност. Подоцна, тој бил и научен советник и директор (1973-1986) на Институтот за македонски јазик „Крсте Мисирков“. Во Радио Скопје бил основач, уредник и соработник на емисијата „Македонскиот јазик низ историјата и практиката“ (1951-1962). Остварил студиски престои во Полска (1958) и Чехословачка (1961). Бил уредник на списанијата „Литературен збор“ (1961–1976), „Ономастица југославица“ (1969–1982), „Македонски јазик“ (1970–1984) и основач и одговорен уредник на списанието „Македонистика“ (1977–1985). Освен тоа, бил претседател на Друштвото на преведувачите на Македонија (1955–1956), секретар на Друштвото за македонски јазик (1956-1958), секретар на Македонскиот славистички комитет (од основањето 1968–1988) и претседател на Сојузот на славистичките друштва на Југославија (1979–1982). Автор е на повеќе книги и околу 500 стручни и научни прилози.

Меѓу позначајните дела чиј автор е проф. д-р Стаматоски се издвојуваат и „Градскиот тетовски говор (1956–1957); „Речник на македонскиот јазик, том И-“ (1961, 1965 и 1966 – коавтор со Тодор Димитровски и Благоја Корубин, во редакција на Блаже Конески); „Графискиот систем во Македонија во 19-от век, (1970); „Борба за македонски литературен јазик“ (1986); „Македонска ономастика“ (1990); „Речник на презимињата кај Македонците, том И (А-Љ) и Ⅱ (М-ш)“ (1994 и 2001 – коавтор и редактор); „Кон ликот на Блаже Конески“ (1995); „Шведско-македонски речник“ (1995); „Континуитетот на македонскиот литературен јазик“ (1998); „Македонско-англиски речник“ (1998); „Јазикот на имињата“ (2000 – коавтор со Маринко Митков); „Во одбрана на македонскиот литературен јазик“ (2001); „На ономастички теми“ (2002); „Мислата на Блаже Конески“ (2006).

Стаматоски беше претседател на Фондацијата за македонски јазик „Небрегово“ од нејзиното основање (2001), којашто ги издава делата поврзани со животот и творештвото на Блаже Конески, но и за одбраната на македонскиот јазик дома и однаднвор.

Проф. д-р Трајко Стаматоски беше и почесен претседател на фудбалскиот клуб „Вардар“, а пред тоа бил долгогодишен член на вардаровото раководство и како таков бил и главен и одговорен уредник на Монографијата објавена во 1987 година, по повод 40-годишнината од формирањето на најтрофејниот македонски фудбалски клуб.
