Welcome to the EPNS bookshop

The English Place-Name Society (EPNS) was established in 1923 to conduct a county-by-county survey of the place-names of England. The first county survey of Buckinghamshire appeared in 1925. To date, the Survey has produced 91 volumes, the most recent being The Place-Names of Shropshire part 9, published in 2020.

Besides the Survey of English Place‑Names, the EPNS publishes and distributes various other titles. These include the Your City's Place-Names series, the Popular Series, the Regional Series, the Supplementary Series, and Field-Name Studies, as well as a number of other publications.

Call for Papers: "Leicestershire’s Names, Places, & History"

Saturday 22 April 2023, University of Leicester

To mark the completion of the 8-volume place-name survey of Leicestershire, the English Place-Name Society, in conjunction with Leicestershire Victoria County History Trust and the Centre for Regional and Local History, is organising a one-day event at the University of Leicester on Saturday 22 April 2023.

We are welcoming proposals for 30-minute papers that draw upon, or subject to critical analysis, any aspect of the names and places of Leicestershire. These might include etymological discussions, single- or group-name studies, questions relating to linguistic contact and exchange, or papers which showcase the use and value of the county’s place- name evidence in broader landscape, ecological, local historical, or cultural studies, or indeed for other contemporary applications.

Confirmed speakers currently include: Professor Judith Jesch (University of Nottingham); Dr Eleanor Rye (University of York); Abigail Lloyd (University of Nottingham); Hannah Sellars (University of Leicester)

A New Dictionary of English Field-Names (2018)

by Paul Cavill, with an introduction by Rebecca Gregory, has been published just before Christmas.

It's a substantial update of John Field's classic work, incorporating material he had collected for a second edition that never appeared, but also drawing on the hugely expanded and now digitised resources of the English Place Names Survey. A definite 'must' for every student of English place-names. Prices vary for EPNS members/ non-members, hb and pb, and are very reasonable for the sturdy hardback.

Here is profile of Dr. Paul Cavill (Assistant Professor in Early English at the University of Nottingham, Member of the Council of the English Place-Name Society).

Paul works mainly in the fields of historical language and place-name studies; he is Lecturer in Early English in the School of English at Nottingham university. He completed his PhD in 1996 and has worked with the English Place-Name Society and the Institute for Name-Studies at Nottingham for over twenty years. In that time he has edited and published eighteen volumes of the prestigious English Place-Name Survey which collects and analyses the place-names of the English counties. He now edits the Journal of the English Place-Name Society and is working on the AHRC-funded Shropshire Place-Names project (2013–2017). Alongside this he has published books and articles relating to the culture and literature of the Anglo-Saxons. Paul enjoys interdisciplinary research and is particularly interested in the interactions between place-names and historical geography including medieval settlement and land-use.

2017’s lecture, on Friday 1st December, was delivered by Prof. Gillian Fellows-Jensen of the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics at the University of Copenhagen. The lecture, 'Highways and byways to the English Place-Name Society through more than fifty years', can be viewed below.

Volunteers for the Staffordshire Place-Name Project wanted

Staffordshire Archives and Heritage is looking for volunteers to join their exciting new project based in Lichfield.

Volunteers for the Staffordshire Place-Name Project will work on collecting historical spellings of place-names from original documents and these will form the basis of the English Place-Name Society Survey of English Place-Names in Staffordshire.

The project, run in partnership with the Institute for Name Studies and the English Place-Name Society, will meet on Tuesdays from 10-12 at Lichfield Record Office.

50 years of the English Place-Name Society

This year’s Cameron Lecture will take place from 18.00–20.00 on 1 December 2017 in the Clive Granger building at the University of Nottingham.

This very special lecture celebrates 50 years of the English Place-Name Society in Nottingham, and will feature an introduction to the late Prof. Kenneth Cameron and his work by Prof. John Insley from the University of Heidelberg, followed by a lecture entitled “Highways and byways to the English Place-Name Society through more than fifty years”, delivered by Prof. Gillian Fellows-Jensen from the Department of Nordic Research at the University of Copenhagen. There will also be a display of posters relating to ongoing research by the English Place-Name Society and at the Institute for Name-Studies, the Society’s home in Nottingham.

We welcome members and non-members alike to this free event, but we do ask that you complete the registration form to reserve your place.
