The ANS is inviting abstract submissions for the 2019 annual conference to be held in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America.  Abstracts in any area of onomastic research are welcome. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is July 31, 2018.  To submit a proposal, simply complete the 2019 Author Information Form.

For organizational purposes, please be sure to include the phrase “ANS 2019” in the subject line of your email. Presenters who may need additional time to secure international payments and travel visas to the United States are urged to submit their proposal as soon as possible.

All proposals will be subjected to blind review. Official notification of proposal acceptances will be sent on or before September 30, 2018. All authors whose papers have been accepted must be current members of the ANS and need to register with both the ANS and the Linguistic Society of America. Meeting Description:

The First Conference on Pokémonastics is to be held at Keio University from May 26 (Sat) to 27 (Sun). 

Recent studies (“Pokémonastics”) have identified sound symbolic relationships in Japanese Pokémon names (Kawahara et al, to appear; Kawahara & Kumagai to appear). More specifically, both mora counts and number of voiced obstruents in their name seem to, albeit stochastically, affect Pokémon characters’ size, weight, and strength parameters. Vowel quality in initial syllables seems to have a tangible effect as well. 

A natural question that arises is whether these sorts of sound symbolic patterns hold in Pokemon names in other languages. Another open question is whether there are other types of sound symbolic patterns. 

We invite researchers addressing these questions in English, Chinese and Russian. Our hope is that based on cross-linguistic Pokémonastic research we can explore important questions about sound-meaning relationship in natural languages, such as language-specificity and universality of sound symbolism. 

The conference also features talks by the invited speakers that are not related to Pokemonastics. We also intend to have poster sessions by researchers in Japan on topics related to Pokémonastics or otherwise. See call for papers for details. 

In summary, this conference will have three main themes: 

Pokémonastic talks on several languages 
Non-Pokémonastics talks by invited speakers 
Poster sessions that we hope would facilitate international communication between researchers in Japan and invited speakers. (Non-invited, non-Japanese-residing researchers are of course welcome).

2nd Call for Papers: 

We welcome abstract submissions for poster presentations. A poster session will be held both on Saturday and Sunday. We hope the poster sessions to be great opportunities for presenters to interact with the distinguished international invited scholars. 

The deadline for abstract submission is March 23, 2018 (extended). Authors will be notified of the outcome roughly within a week. 

Submissions should either be: 

- Projects on sound symbolism, ideally something that is related to the Pokémonastic enterprise (but not necessarily) and any projects on phonetics and/or phonology. 

At the top of the abstract please specify: 

- Your name 
- Your affiliation 
- Whether you’re a student or already have PhD 
- Whether your presentation is on (a) sound symbolism or (b) general phonetics/phonology 

The evaluation of the abstracts will be conducted internally by the conference committee members. 

Authors may be the first or sole author of at most one abstract, and may be a non-first co-author of any number of abstracts. 

The maximum length for an abstract is 1 page (A4 or US letter size), including tables, figures, and references. Abstract text must be in English, in a 12-point or larger font.

You still have until 1 March to submit an abstract for the international symposium Mapping Empires: Colonial Cartographies of Land and Sea, which will be held from 13–15 September 2018 in Oxford (UK) and is jointly organised by the ICA Commission on the History of Cartography, the ICA Commission on Topographic Mapping and the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford.

Besides its scientific programme, the symposium will also include a nice array of social events, namely an ice-breaker reception, a maps and rare books exhibit and reception at Christ Church Library, a guided tour of Oxford, a conference dinner and a full-day visit to nearby Blenheim Palace.

Every name has its rationale and its existence can be explained or justified. Shakespear’s famous question “what is in a name” provokes onomasticians to think beyond a name and apply some analytic philosophy and logic of names, naming and the naming systems. The call for papers to the 2018 NSSA Conference aims at inviting critical reflections on names and naming beyond the borders of traditions of analytic philosophy and logic.

The sub-themes expected to be explored should include, but not limited to, the following:
 Anthroponyms (i.e. personal names; names in religion; nicknames, etc.)
 Geographical Names (i.e. toponyms and place names)
 Names in history
 Literary onomastics (the use of names in literature)
 Brand names
 Politics of naming

As a multifaceted negotiation process, naming plays a crucial role in the social construction of space and time, in that it inscribes ideological messages about the past (and the present) into the texts of our everyday life. This critical perspective marks a recent shift whereby scholars in the social sciences and humanities are investigating the power relations inherent in naming practices, seen as an active and at the same time contestable process. As a result, there has been a growing interest in the relationship between names and a wide range of identity discourses—national, local, racial/ethnic— on the commodification of places, or on the politics of collective memory and on people attitudes.

Within the outlined trend toward the exploration of the significance of names and naming for issues of identity, attachment, and power relations, the role of tourism is still a rather underinvestigated area of research. Yet, as a few studies have highlighted, a ‘mere’ name may well draw tourists’ attention as a marker which signposts that something is worth visiting. More in detail, the relevance of naming practices in tourism stems from their ability to suggest distinction, originality, authenticity or even romance for a number of reasons ranging from linguistic, literary, historical and archeological references to local traditions as well as to the strategies adopted to rebrand places to make them more appealing to potential visitors.

The international conference invites original contributions to this emerging field of enquiry, fostering a multidisciplinary approach in exploring the broad theme of naming, identity and tourism.

We welcome theoretical contributions, case studies and methodological reconsiderations aimed at investigating the relationship between names/naming and identity within several areas of interest, including but not limited to:

• archaeology and tourism
• collective memory and tourism discourses
• film-induced tourism
• heritage tourism
• intangible heritage tourism
• literature-induced tourism
• naming controversies and tourism 
• recovering lost language in tourism discourses
• the commodification of tourist sights
• the use of minority languages for promotional purposes
• tourism discourses
• translation issues

Especially welcome are original papers within onomastic and critical discourse research or which highlight and apply new methodologies sourced from anywhere across the humanities and social sciences.

Au livre IX de sa Poétique, Aristote distingue la poésie de l’histoire par son usage particulier des noms propres. S’il est vrai qu’il désigne sous le nom de « poésie » ce que nous appelons aujourd’hui « fiction », il n’en demeure pas moins que le plus ancien ouvrage de théorie littéraire n’a rien de plus pressé, quand il s’interroge sur la spécificité de la poésie, que de poser la question de son traitement des noms propres. Du reste, à en croire Saussure, qui y consacra l’essentiel de son énergie, soit dix mille pages manuscrites sur les douze mille qu’il nous a léguées, l’inscription de noms propres, disséminés sous forme d’anagrammes, serait une pratique immémoriale, aussi ancienne que la poésie occidentale elle-même, remontant aux chants homériques et, au-delà, à « la vieille poésie indo-européenne »[i]. Quoi qu’il en soit, les travaux de Saussure, qui portent sur le très archaïque vers saturnien, et qui n’ont cessé d’être commentés depuis leur révélation par Starobinski[ii] il y a près de cinquante ans, semblent avoir orienté dans deux directions la recherche sur les noms propres en poésie : d’un côté la linguistique textuelle, d’obédience structuraliste, s’attache à analyser la réfraction des signifiants onomastiques dans un poème donné, suivant une méthode dont le toujours remarquable ouvrage de François Rigolot, Poétique et onomastique[iii], donne le modèle[iv] ; d’un autre côté, les recherches les plus actives, en matière d’onomastique poétique, sont le fait des hellénistes[v] et surtout des latinistes[vi]. Cicéron s’en fût réjoui, qui dit son admiration pour les vers « illuminé[s] par de brillants noms géographiques »[vii].

Dans ce tableau des publications actuelles, la poésie française fait piètre figure qui semble intéresser, au mieux, les traducteurs[viii]. Et pourtant du roman arthurien en vers[ix] à Yves Bonnefoy, pour qui « en poésie il n’y a jamais que des noms propres », c’est-à-dire « mouvement de surgissement de l’être »[x], et qui en a donné un exemple paradigmatique avec Du mouvement et de l’immobilité de Douve(1953), les poètes français n’ont cessé de jouer des virtualités musicales, sémantiques et symboliques de l’onomastique. Chez les Marot père et fils, Scève, Baïf, Ronsard, toponymes (« géhenne de Gênes ») et anthroponymes font ainsi l’objet de remotivations expressives, à la faveur d’anagrammes (Marie/aimer) ou de paronomases (« Ma douce Helene/ma douce haleine »)[xi]. A toutes époques, l’épopée, la poésie de circonstances et la veine satirique à charge ont multiplié les noms propres, avec des effets divers. Au Grand Siècle, La Fontaine se délecte des consonances grecques – « Quoi que pût faire Artarpax, / Psicarpax, Méridarpax… » (« Le Combat des rats et des belettes ») – avant que les romantiques ne découvrent la force poétique des noms mystérieux, sur le modèle de « La blanche Oloossone à la blanche Camyre… » (Musset, « La Nuit de mai »), prélude à la poésie pure et aux raffinements parnassiens d’un Leconte de Lisle dont les Poèmes antiques bruissent de sonorités gréco-latines – Klytie et Thestylis, Thaliarque et Tyndaris… Les symbolistes et les décadents rêvent autant de Salomé ou Hérodiade que des noms d’artistes ou d’écrivains, particulièrement Mallarmé dans ses tombeaux – en hommage à Gautier, Poe, Baudelaire, Verlaine... Plus près de nous, Aragon – « Hilversum Kalundborg Brno l’univers crache/Des parasites dans Mozart […] » (« Petite suite sans fil », Le Crève-coeur) et Georges Perros[xii] ont à leur tour été sensibles à ce qu’on appelle communément la poésie des noms propres, leur puissance suggestive ou exotique. Bonnefoy lui-même a commenté dans tel vers de Baudelaire : « Rubens, fleuve d’oubli, jardin de la paresse » (« Les Phares ») ce « commencement si abrupt – un nom propre avec tout son sens, tout son poids »[xiii].

Si la recherche universitaire semble, ces dernières décennies, avoir délaissé la question de l’onomastique en poésie, c’est peut-être que le discours dominant, du côté de la linguistique, tient encore le nom propre pour un signe opaque, vide de sens. Aussi, pour se mettre à son écoute, importe-t-il de revenir, avec Paul Siblot[xiv] et l’école de Montpellier, à Bréal, qui tient pour une sémantique des noms propres, qu’il ne situe pas « en dehors de la langue »[xv] : en vertu de quoi le nom propre est un « désignateur souple » et non pas « rigide »[xvi]. Encore faut-il distinguer, en poésie, entre les noms réels – localités connues, héros de la mythologie… – et les noms forgés, sur le modèle de Douve ou de l’énigmatique Circeto – « Ce soir à Circeto des hautes glaces, grasse comme le poisson, et enluminée comme les dix mois de la nuit rouge, – (son cœur ambre et spunk) » (Rimbaud, « Dévotion », dans Illuminations) –, dont la valeur, comme l’a montré Christian Doumet[xvii], est irréductible à une incertaine érudition soucieuse d’en retrouver la source. Si les noms imaginaires s’offrent à la rêverie et s’insèrent idéalement dans le réseau phonétique du texte, les noms empiriques posent le problème de leur référent : à partir de là, les approches divergent, selon qu’on s’attache aux connotations culturelles d’un nom fameux[xviii] ou que le référent soit tenu, en bonne orthodoxie, comme un obstacle à la logique interne du poème : « Pour que le nom propre […] puisse se charger de signification, il faut que le référent s’estompe […] : le nom, tout à la recherche d’une motivation phonique, morphologique et sémantique, participe alors de la ‘‘littérarité’’ du texte »[xix]. Une nouvelle ramification du problème consiste dès lors à s’interroger sur le nom de l’auteur, tel qu’il s’inscrit (ou non) dans son poème[xx].

Cette journée d’étude a pour objectif de faire le point sur l’analyse des noms propres – noms de personnes et noms de lieux – en poésie. Les communications porteront exclusivement sur la littérature de langue française, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.

            Les actes de cette journée paraîtront dans Etudes françaises, sous réserve des expertises d’usage.

            Les propositions de communications sont à adresser pour le 15 octobre 2017 à Yves Baudelle (yves.baudelle@univ-lille3.fr) et Jérôme Hennebert (jerome.hennebert@univ-lille3.fr) sous la forme suivante :
un argumentaire d’une page maximum, présentant la teneur de la communication proposée ;
une bibliographie succincte de 4 ou 5 références sur le sujet traité ;
une brève biobibliographie de 4 à 5 lignes.

Call for Paper Proposals for a session at the 25th International Medieval Congress on Names as Memorials, July 2-5, 2018, Leeds, England

This year the International Medieval Congress celebrates its 25th anniversary with the special thematic strand “Memory”. The Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources intends to organize a session (or more than one if we receive sufficient interest!) at the IMC on the subject of “Names as Memorials”.

Names, both personal names and place names, provide a unique way for people, both individuals and people groups, to encode both memories and memorials. These can be memories of individual people, memories of ancient languages, and memorials of saints, miracles, or important events. The special session(s) on “Names as Memorials” seeks paper proposals that reflect this special role that names play. Possible topics include (but are not restricted to):

• Given names used for specifically memorial purposes.
• The practice of naming children after dead or living relatives.
• Memorialising saints in personal names.
• How place names encode the “memory” of dead peoples and languages.
• Vernacular personal and place names in early Latin documents as a means of reconstructing our memory of early vernacular languages.
• Etymology, especially folk etymology, as a way of preserving and constructing memory.

The deadline for paper proposals is September 15, 2017. To propose a paper, send the following information to Dr. Sara L. Uckelman (Durham University) at s.l.uckelman@durham.ac.uk:

Memory is a major theme in contemporary life, a key to personal, social and cultural identity. Scholars have studied the concept from different perspectives and within different disciplines: philosophy, sociology, anthropology, geography, architecture, urban design, and the interdisciplinary “place studies”. According to Pierre Nora, places of memory or lieux de mémoire refer to those places where “memory crystallizes and secretes itself”; the places where the exhausted capital of collective memory condenses and is expressed. To be considered as such, these sites must be definable in the three senses of the word: material, symbolical and functional, all in different degrees but always present. What makes them a memory site is the interplay of memory and history, the interaction of both factors, which allows their reciprocal over-determination.

“The Place of Memory and Memory of Place” International Conference aims to spark new conversations across the field of memory and place studies. Papers are invited on topics related, but not limited, to:

• monuments and sites of trauma
• childhood homes
• city space and sightseeing
• burial places (graves, cementaries, necropoleis)
• ruins and forgotten places
• heterotopias and heterochronies
• toponymy and topoanalysis
• cartography and mapmaking

The conference will bring together scholars from different fields including philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, literature, linguistics, architecture, geography and others.

The language of the conference is English.

Paper proposals up to 250 words and a brief biographical note should be sent by 30 June 2017 to: placeofmemory@irf-network.org.
