We invite authors to send us their articles dedicated to the following topics:

issue 1, 2020: Contested Names: (Re-)Naming and Place-Name Politics in Post-Socialist Countries

The Ideology and Politics Journal (IPJ) is dedicated to the analysis of ideologies in their political, social, and conceptual forms. Devoted to the advancement of understanding of socio-political processes in post-Soviet Belarus, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine, as well as the wider space of the former Soviet Union, the IPJ addresses the ideological and intellectual issues arising from the formation of new societies in post-Soviet space.  The IPJ encourages discussion of the historical, cultural and ethical dimensions of political action, with the intention of contributing to both the advancement of interdisciplinary research of contemporary ideologies and the promotion of good politics in the countries of the region.

The Ideology and Politics Journal is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal published once or twice a year in electronic form. The Journal is indexed by Scopus (since December 2016), the DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals, since 2015) and the Index Copernicus (since 2017).

issue 1, 2020: Contested Names: (Re-)Naming and Place-Name Politics in Post-Socialist Countries

This volume addresses the theory and  the practice of place-name policies carried out in socialist and post-socialist states during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The volume aims to analyse geographical (re-)naming as a political and ideological practice, engaged in the construction of historical narratives and symbolic space, which also has shapedcollective memories and identities in post-communist and post-soviet countries. The issue will focus on state and local toponymic strategies and habits, renaming patterns, as well as hegemonic and alternative ideologies of place-naming. We invite articles from scholars working in the fields of history, geography, sociology, linguistics, political, gender, culturaland urban studies.     

The volume aims to analyze the following themes:

• The politicization of toponymy and commemoration as a result of changes in political and ideological regimes in post-communist and post-socialist countries.
• The deologicalization and de-ideologicalization of place names: strategies, practices, projects and patterns
• Memory politics and commemorative naming practices
• Place-name politics and the construction of collective identities (national, regional, local, and gender)
• Renaming as the rebranding of national narratives
• Actors and the objects of (re-)naming
• Place names and the symbolism of urban and rural spaces; practices of place (re-)naming and the politics of place
• Gender issues in the domain of toponymy and renaming
• Linguistic landscapes, place-name design, multilingualism and language policies
• The economics of (re-)naming and the commercialization of place names
• The reshaping of toponymic landscapes in uncontrolled areas and military zones
• Critical toponymies, toponymic silencing and the contestation of (re-)naming policies. The hidden discourses of renaming. The problem of parallel names

Both single-case and comparative studies of the defined topics are welcome.

 Articles (min 5,000 words, max. 15,000 words) should be submitted no later than December 30, 2019 to the editor’s e-mail address [mikhailminakov1971@gmail.com]. Submitted texts should be arranged in accordance with the Instructions for authors that are specified here: [http://ideopol.org/?page_id=7]. The decision on publication will be made subsequent to two blind peer reviews of the manuscript. All authors who have submitted their articles will be notified on Editorial Board’s decision by April 15, 2020.

To enhance international dialogue on the regional issues, IPJ accepts the submission of articles in English, Russian and Ukrainian. All accepted articles are published in their original language with abstracts in English, Russian and Ukrainian.

Submitted texts should be arranged in accordance with the Instructions for authors that are specified here: [http://ideopol.org/?page_id=7]. The decision on publication will be made subsequent to two blind peer reviews of the manuscript. All authors who have submitted their articles will be notified on Editorial Board’s decision by December 15, 2019.

Publication in our journal does not involve any fees or honoraria.
