Nous avons tous déjà entendu ces noms comme Clovis, Childéric, Grégoire de Tours ou Mérovée en cours d'Histoire Géographie, mais sans forcément savoir qu'ils ont été "Francisés" pour être plus prononçables... Aujourd'hui, nous nous penchons donc sur leur sens initial et les traditions qui étaient liées à leur attribution.

OnomOs Diachronic Corpus is available

The Czech National Corpus, hosted by Charles University in Prague, has recently unveiled a linguistic treasure – OnomOs. This diachronic corpus is the result of collaborative efforts led by researchers from the Department of Czech Language at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ostrava, spearheaded by Jaroslav David and his team.

OnomOs stands out as a diachronic corpus meticulously crafted from selected issues of the (Rudé) Právo newspaper. Developed with a keen eye for onymic nuances, this corpus is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the researchers involved. One of the defining features of OnomOs is its inclusion of named entity annotation. This annotation adheres to the onomastic concept of proper names, enriching the corpus with a layer of linguistic detail that adds depth and context.

Thanks to the dedication of the team at the University of Ostrava, this diachronic corpus opens new avenues for exploring the evolution of proper names in the linguistic landscape. As researchers and language enthusiasts, let’s embark on a journey of discovery with OnomOs.

The OnomOs corpus is a linguistically processed database of texts from the periodicals Rudé právo (published 1920–1995) and Právo (1995–present). It always contains one issue from each decade in which (Rudé) Právo was published. The corpus includes texts in which the language component dominates; therefore, not included are, for example, advertisements, cinema, theatre and radio programmes, some types of texts from the sports section (e.g. scoreboards and player rosters), comics or crossword puzzles. The structure of the corpus is presented in more detail in Figure 1. In total, the corpus contains 255 149 tokens.

Opening of the Onomastic Fund in Kazakhstan

In the scientific library of the Eurasian National University named after L.N. Gumilyov solemnly opened the onomastic fund named after Telgozha Zhanuzak.

The theoretical scientist, one of the fundamental researchers of Kazakh onomastics, Telgozha Zhanuzak donated more than 800 valuable books and manuscripts from his personal library, collected and accumulated by him throughout his creative life, to the scientific library, within which an onomastic fund was opened and presented in his name.

At the opening of the event, the Doctor of Philological Sciences, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan Dikhan Kamzabekuly made a welcoming speech, noting that libraries are the most important cultural heritage. He thanked the 96-year-old authoritative aksakal, known in the Kazakh spiritual space under the name «Telagan», and thanked for the work done for the benefit of the country.

Scientist Telgozha Zhanuzak in his response wished the young people his good wishes, blessed them, expressing confidence that these books will become the property of the general public.

During the event, a well-known public figure, scientist Adil Akhmetov and the general director of the center «Til-Kazyna» Makpal Zhumabai presented several books to the onomastic fund.

Director of the Institute of Linguistics Anar Fazylzhanova, Doctor of Philology, Professor Serik Negimov, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan Karimbek Kurmanaliyev, Doctor of Philological Sciences Sherubai Kurmanbayuly took part in the presentation Head of the Department of Foreign Philology Professor Aigul Bizhkenova and representatives of the Nukus State Pedagogical Institute (Uzbekistan).

In her speech, scientist Yrysty Kuttymuratova noted that the popularity of the works of Telgozha Zhanuzak among scientists of Karakalpakstan in research on the theory of onomastics is one of the main literary works.

Director of the scientific library Bakytzhan Orazaliyev thanked scientist and noted that the scope of this fund will be replenished annually, all the works on the Kazakh onomastic will be collected here and for the convenience of readers will be created an electronic database of onomastic fund.

for a topical issue of Onomástica desde América Latina

ODAL invites submissions for the topical issue “Mysterious are the Ways of the Name: Biblical Anthroponyms in Secular Contexts” edited by Eugen Schochenmaier (e-Onomastics, ICOS, Germany).

Introduction:

Biblical anthroponyms, the names of individuals found in Scripture, hold a significant place in religious and cultural histories. These names are often deeply intertwined with religious narratives, moral lessons, and spiritual symbolism. However, the influence of biblical anthroponyms extends beyond theological boundaries, permeating various secular realms. The Journal Onomástica desde América Latina invites scholars from diverse fields to contribute original research exploring the multifaceted presence and implications of biblical anthroponyms in secular contexts.

Scope and Aim:

This special journal issue seeks to examine the intersection of biblical anthroponyms and secular environments, delving into their role, significance, and impact across a wide range of disciplines. While these names originate in religious traditions, they frequently find resonance in literature, art, history, psychology, sociology, linguistics, and more. This issue aims to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue that uncovers the dynamic ways in which biblical anthroponyms have shaped secular narratives, language, and thought (i.e., Names in the Bibles Project (2022), by Mondonomo).

Especially welcomed (but not limited to) are papers that explore the interaction between biblical anthroponyms and secular contexts under the lens of:

• socioonomastics: the study of names from a sociolinguistic perspective, which examines the use and variety of names through methods that demonstrate the social, cultural, and situational conditions in name usage. As a part of the present topical issue, it should aim to explore variations of names over time and space – why are some Bible-based personal names given and others not, why are some so popular and others fell into oblivion? (e.g. Onomastics between Sacred and Profane (ed. by Oliviu Felecan, 2019)
• geonomastics: the study of distributional patterns of proper names that may clarify how proprial units and their geography are interrelated. It can be about atlases of surnames, maps of hagionyms, repartition of onyms on a given territory (Saintly Placenames in Europe), distributional figures of onomastic cognates (Propensity of the name John in the respective national language), percentage maps of one personal name in different areas (Paul Surname Maps of Ireland), etc.
• deonomastics: the study of common names that are derived from personal names. Such deonymic appellatives, mirroring the lexicalization of proper nouns, imply both semantic and formal shifts. Through this endeavour, our intention is to ascertain whether biblical names continue to contribute to the enrichment of the lexicon in the 21st century (e.g. La lexicalización de los nombres bíblicos en la historia del español (2017) by Consuelo García Gallarín)

The articles must be submitted electronically by ODAL platform for the section Dossier, the call for papers opens in September 2023 and ends in February 2024. The dossier is expected to be published in May 2024.

100th anniversary of the Prof. Ivan Sukhomlyn

 A commemorative meeting took place to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the philologist Ivan Sukhomlyn. He is a graduate and longtime lecturer at Oles Honchar Dnipro National University. Researcher is well-known as an expert in onomastics, particularly anthroponymy. His works are considered part of the golden fund of Ukrainian onomastics. The meeting featured an overview of the scientist's research activities, and then colleagues shared their memories.

У краєзнавчому відділі відбулась зустріч-спогад до 100-річчя від дня народження науковця-філолога Івана Дмитровича Сухомлина.

І. Д. Сухомлин – випускник і багаторічний викладач Дніпропетровського національного університету ім. Олеся Гончара, кандидат філологічних наук, доцент, відомий у колі спеціалістів фахівець з ономастики, і зокрема, антропоніміки. Його праці увійшли до золотого фонду української ономастики. На зустрічі було представлено огляд наукової діяльності вченого, прозвучали спогади колег по роботі та учнів Івана Дмитровича.

Book “Onomastics of Truth – 2” presented in the Republic of Azerbaijan

The book “Onomastics of Truth – 2” was presented at the Institute of Geography

A presentation of the book “Onomastics of Truth - 2” (Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur) by Nazim Valishov and Tahir Kazimli took place at the Institute of Geography named after academician H. Aliyev of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Senior Researcher, PhD Natik Babaev is the scientific editor of the book, general director, professor Zakir Eminov is a member of the editorial board.

The event was attended by representatives of corresponding research institutes of the National Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Education and public organizations, as well as employees of the Institute of Geography.

The general director of the institute, Professor Zakir Eminov, opened the event with an introductory speech, gave general information about the book and especially noted the socio-political significance of the work. It was reported that the book contains information about 1097 settlements, 1960 oronyms and 480 hydronyms of the occupied regions of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur during the First Karabakh War. The toponyms of these territories are studied linguistically, historically and geographically as objects of research, and their explanatory analysis is given. The book is a valuable source confirming that Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur are the ancient Turkic-Oghuz homeland.

BSU Professor Nureddin Abbasov, Associate Professor Ilgar Mamedov, Head of Department of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS, Professor Asadulla Jafarov, General Director of the Argunesh Publishing House, writer-publicist Ogtay Aliyev, Chairman of the Iron Fist public association Ulviya Vasifgyzy and others spoke out and expressed their opinions about the book, highly appreciated the work of the authors.

AR Elm və Təhsil Nazirliyinin akademik H.Əliyev adına Coğrafiya İnstitutunda Nazim Vəlişov və Tahir Kazımlının “Həqiqətin onomastikası – 2” (Qarabağ və Şərqi Zəngəzur)  kitabının təqdimatı keçirilib.

Coğrafiya İnstitutun böyük elmi işçisi, c.ü.f.d. Natiq Babayev kitabın elmi redaktoru, baş direktor, professor Zakir Eminov isə redaksiya heyətinin üzvüdür.

Tədbirdə Milli Elmlər Akademiyasınin müvafiq elmi tədqiqat institutlarının, Təhsil Nazirliyi və ictimai təşkilatların nümayəndələri, eləcə də Coğrafiya İnstitutunun əməkdaşları iştirak ediblər.  

İnstitutun baş direktoru, professor Zakir Eminov tədbiri giriş sözü ilə açaraq kitab haqqında ümumi məlumat verib, əsərin ictimai-siyasi əhəmiyyətini xüsusi qeyd edib. Bildirilib ki, kitabda Birinci Qarabağ Müharibəsi zamanı işğal edilmiş Qarabağ və Şərqi Zəngəzur bölgələrinin 1097 yaşayış məntəqəsi, 1960 oronim,  480 hidronim haqqında məlumat verilib. Bu ərazilərdəki toponimlər tədqiqat obyekti kimi linqvistik, tarixi və coğrafi baxımdan araşdırılmış, onların izahlı təhlili verilmişdir. Kitab Qarabağ və Şərqi Zəngəzurun qədim türk-oğuz yurdu olduğu təsdiq edən dəyərli mənbədir.

Kripke on Proper Names

Lecture II of Naming and Necessity where Kripke explains what he thinks is wrong with any view that says names are associated with a sense (Frege) or a cluster of descriptions (Russell, Searle). Names are "rigid designators" which means that "Bruce Wayne is Batman" is a necessary truth.

"Proper Names" by John Searle

This is a video lecture in a course on the philosophy of language. It explains John R Searle's seminal and groundbreaking 1958 paper "Proper Names". Searle discusses and ultimately rejects both Frege's and Mill's theories of proper names. But Searle does think that associated with every name there is something like Frege's sense, except Searle thinks that it is a purposefully vague cluster of descriptions. Therefore, Searle's theory is often called the Cluster Theory of Proper Names. This video explain's Searle's theory and it uses a lot of examples involving Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Aristotle.
