Call for Papers: American Name Society Conference 2021

The American Name Society (ANS) is now inviting proposals for papers for its next annual conference. The 2021 conference will be held in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America. Abstracts in any area of onomastic research are welcome. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is June 30, 2020. To submit a proposal, simply complete the 2021 Author Information Form.

Please email this completed form to ANS Vice President Laurel Sutton using the following address: <laurelasutton@gmail.com>. For organizational purposes, please be sure to include the phrase “ANS 2021” in the subject line of your email.  Presenters who may need additional time to secure international funding and/or travel visas to the United States are urged to submit their proposal as soon as possible.

IMPORTANT: Because of the current global COVID-19 pandemic, it is unclear whether the conference will proceed as planned. If the LSA decides against an in-person meeting, we will consider online alternatives so that scholars may still present their important research. We will provide updates on the conference status at the ANS website and through email.

All proposals will be subjected to blind review. Official notification of proposal acceptances will be sent on or before August 30, 2020. All authors whose papers have been accepted must be current members of the ANS and need to register with both the ANS and the Linguistic Society of America. Call for Papers – Special Session of ANS about Texas Names, Austin, January 5-8, 2017

The 2017 annual meeting of ANS will be January 5-8 in Austin, TX. In recognition of this occasion there will be a special session devoted to Texas names.
Abstracts on any aspect of Texas names are welcome:

• place names in Texas
• personal names in Texas
• regional or ethnic names in Texas
• changes of names
• pronunciation of Texas names
• street names in Texas
• ranch names
• Texas brands
• folk etymology in Texas names
• fanciful stories attached to Texas names
• names of Texas radio and TV stations
• Texas highway names
• names of Texas politicians
• Texas formal vs. colloquial names
• Texas names in media
• names of Texas newspapers
• New England names in Texas

… the list goes on.

You need not live in Texas nor be a native or even a naturalized Texan to participate. Texans, former Texans, closet Texans, Texas wannabees, Texans from all parts of the world are welcome.

Laura Ivanov and Sara-Joelle Clark will give a keynote speech at the ANS annual meeting

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) in Washington, D.C. is one of the world’s premiere institutions for preserving the memory of the Holocaust and reminding current and future generations about the dangers of hatred and intolerance. The USHMM maintains one of the largest international research collections of historical artifacts documenting the crimes committed during the Nazi period.

The American Name Society is pleased to announce that one of the keynote speeches to take place during the annual conference in Washington, D.C. will be given by Laura Ivanov (left) and Sara-Joelle Clark (left), who work in the Holocaust Survivors and Victims Resource Center of the USHMM.

        

Ivanov and Clark will be giving a talk entitled “Research and Preservation of Names at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum”. During the presentation the experts will discuss the types of name based collections that are available at the museum. The presentation is a must-see for researchers and private citizens interested in learning more about international efforts to uncover and preserve the names of Shoah victims for all posterity.

The keynote is scheduled for Friday, January 8th, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm in Salon 14 of the of the Marriott Marquis.

Jacqueline Pata will be a keynote speaker for the ANS annual meeting

On the 9th of January, 2015, the Linguistic Society of America passed a landmark resolution calling for the immediate cessation of the all Native American names, nicknames, logos, and mascots in sport. The resolution is to respect and support the right of individual tribal nations to decide how to protect and celebrate their respective tribal heritages, including their right to control how their names will be used in public spaces.

This coming January, during the ANS annual meeting in Washington, D.C., the American Name Society is pleased to announce that one of our keynote speakers will be the Executive Director of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), Ms. Jacqueline Pata.

 

The title of Ms. Pata’s talk is “Reclaiming Identity: Indigenous Stereotypes and Misperceptions”. She will discuss the NCAI’s continuing efforts to ban racist and derogatory names that are still used throughout North America for sporting events.

The keynote speech has been scheduled for Saturday, the 9th of January 2016 from 1:30 to 2:30 pm in Salon 14 of the Marriott Marquis.

Jacqueline Pata (Tlingit) 

Jacqueline Pata, Executive Director

Jacqueline Pata is the Executive Director of NCAI. She is a member of the Raven/Sockeye Clan of the Tlingit Tribe (pronounced – Kling-get) and is the 6th Vice President for the Central Council of the Tlingit-Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. 

Mrs. Pata serves on a variety of national executive boards, including a Vice President for the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights,  Board Member for the George Gustave Heye Center of the National Museum of the American Indian. She is also the Vice Chair of Sealaska Corporation, an Alaska Native regional corporation. In her commitment to American Indian youth development, Pata sits on the Native American Advisory Council for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. 

Prior to joining NCAI in June 2001, Pata served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Native American Programs of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  Previously, Pata served as the Executive Director of the Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority headquartered in Juneau, Alaska and she is a former Vice-Chair of the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation. She served as Chairperson of the National American Indian Housing Council and was appointed to the National Commission on American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Housing. She also has served on the National Community Development Financial Institution Fund Advisory Board, an advisory board to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Among her other activities, prior to her move to Washington, D.C., she is extremely proud of her service for 13 years as Director of a Native Youth Culture Camp held each summer where young people experience and learn traditional values.

ANS Panel on Literary Onomastics at the Modern Language Association Conference

On the 8th of January 2016, the ANS will be hosting a special panel on literary onomastics during the annual conference of the Modern Language Association (MLA) in Austin, Texas. The title of this year’s panel is
“Names in the Literary Workplace”.
Three papers will be presented during this event:

1. Linguistic Imperialism in Doctor Dolittle (to be presented by Jonathan Rey Lee
2. Screen Names: Names and the Limits of the Human in Don DeLillo’s The Body Artist (Candace Caraco)
3. Naming and the Work of Revolution: Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies (Christine De Vinne).

The panel will take place from 10:15am to 11:30am, in the Austin Convention Center.

The American Name Society presents two conferences per year for name scholars, enthusiasts and linguists.

The American Name Society (ANS), the oldest scholarly society devoted to the study of
names in the United States, is now inviting proposals for papers for its next annual conference. The 2014 proceedings will be held in conjunction with the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) in San Francisco, California. Papers in any area of onomastic research are welcome.

Proposals should include a précis of up to 500 words as well as a 100-word abstract for publication in the LSA and ANS programs. The deadline for receipt of proposals is July 1, 2014. However, presenters who may need additional time to secure international payments and travel visas to the United States are urged to submit their proposal as soon as possible.
