Description

Key Role:

Analyze and conflate information associated with feature data within the Geographic Names Database (GNDB). Prepare files and maps for work and enter data accurately to maintain and update the GNDB. Respond to questions concerning the proper and correct usage of names, various Romanization systems, and other descriptive information related to geographic names and policies and procedures. Interpret and apply national and international policies governing the treatment of names and general guidelines coming from the US Board on Geographic Names and other related organizations. Use the Geographic Names Processing System (GNPS), charts, imagery, and geospatial tools to refine names information.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
-2+ years of experience with regional toponymy specializing in the Korean language
-Experience with using ArcGIS or GeoMedia Pro software and common office business software
-Ability to show Korean language skill level 2 for reading
-TS/SCI clearance
-BA or BS degree

Additional Qualifications:
-MA or MS degree preferred
-GIS Certification preferred

Experience:

  • Professor Nobuhle Hlongwa has 17 years’ experience in academia. She joined the University of Durban Westville in 1997 as a Lecturer. She is the former Acting Deputy Dean of Undergraduate Studies in the faculty of Humanities, Development and Social Sciences. She is the former Head of the School of isiZulu Studies (2005-2007). Currently, she monitors student enrolments and academic performance of undergraduate students and the implementation of the University language policy in the College of Humanities. She is an external examiner for MA and PHD thesis for Stellenbosch, UCT, UNISA, UNIZULU, Rhodes and DUT.
