A new Dictionary of Proper Names "Λεξικό Κυρίων Ονομάτων"

Mr G. Babiniotis, former Rector and Honorary Professor of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has created another new dictionary. It is a brand new Dictionary of Proper Names, which tells the fascinating story of the most significant and best-known proper names—toponyms and anthroponyms—by explaining their etymology and exploring their historical background.

The new Dictionary of Proper Names contains:

• over 2,700 toponyms and anthroponyms, Greek and foreign, ancient and modern
• reliable etymological information for each entry
• extensive historical and encyclopedic details
• dating of the earliest occurrence or reference of the foreign proper name in Greek Literature, which in most cases happens for the first time
• a study of the history of proper names from the sources
• the main diminutive, pet, and abbreviated names of persons

• a special appendix with comments on the common elements of the different entries (e.g., toponyms and anthroponyms deriving from names of animals, plants, colours, rivers, rulers, objects, etc.), from which emerge the fundamental principles of onomatology.
