One important branch of onomastics involves the investigation of the intersection between language and topography. To that end, many onomasticians are also geographers.

The American Name Society is sad to share the tragic news, recentlyconfirmed by the Association of the American Geographers (AAG): On the 13th of November, 2015, French geographer, Dr. Matthieu Giroud, an Associate Professor at the Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, was murdered in the terrorist attacks in Paris, France. Dr. Giroud’s area of specialization was immigration and inter-ethnic relations. Dr. Giroud leaves behind his 3 year old son and his wife, who is pregnant with their second child.

The American Name Society expresses condolences to both the Giroud family and all the other mourners who’ve lost loved ones during terrorist attacks this year.

Matthieu Giroud, maître de conférences en géographie à l’IUT de Marne-la-Vallée, fait partie des nombreuses victimes de l’attaque terroriste survenue vendredi au Bataclan, à Paris. Son corps a été identifié ce dimanche matin.

Ce père de famille de 39 ans était sorti vendredi avec des amis pour se rendre au concert du groupe californien Eagles of Death Metal. Originaire de Jarrie (Isère), près de Grenoble, Matthieu Giroud vivait à Paris avec son épouse, enceinte, et leur petit garçon de 3 ans, depuis quelques années.

Ses parents et sa femme étaient sans nouvelles de ce professeur reconnu depuis vendredi soir. Des avis de recherche avaient été publiés sur Twitter grâce au hashtag #parisrecherche pour tenter de le retrouver. Plusieurs personnes, dont des élèves, lui rendent hommage ce dimanche sur les réseaux sociaux.

Nicolas Classeau, un de ses collègues, directeur de l’IUT de Champs-sur-Marne, est également décédé lors de l’attaque du Bataclan.
