Project "The settlement names of the Canton of Zurich" completed

The research project "The settlement names of the Canton of Zurich", financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Charitable Fund of the Canton of Zurich, was completed on time on September 30, 2022. Since October 8, all name articles are now published on ortsnamen.ch. The end of the project was celebrated at the 15th meeting of the Arbeitskreis für Namenforschung at the University of Zurich (October 7-9, 2022).

Within two project phases, 3669 settlement names were recorded historically and analyzed linguistically within six years. The basis for this was formed by more than 35,000 critically examined historical documents, of which almost 28,000 were newly indexed, as well as phonetic transcriptions of the dialect pronunciations of the names. 

The project team (Inga Siegfried, Mirjam Kilchmann and Seraphin Schlager as well as Stefan Würth in the first project phase) was accompanied by a board of trustees (consisting of Hans Bickel, Elvira Glaser, Beat Gnädinger, Andreas Werner and Dölf Wild) during the entire project. Elvira Glaser (University of Zurich) and Martin Graf (Swiss Idiotikon) were in charge of the project.
