Skriftstudier har fått allt större betydelse inom språk- och kulturvetenskap de senaste åren. Fältet har

vidgats med frågeställningar som inte bara rör grafonomi och stavningsregler utan också skriftens

medialitet, skrivpraxis och skriftens sociala dimension. Inom namnforskningen har skriftstudier inte i

någon större utsträckning uppmärksammats som ett eget fält, även om det finns många studier som

behandlar namn i skrift. Samtidigt finns det studier utanför den traditionella namnforskningen som också

undersöker skrivna namn ur flera av de ovan nämnda synvinklarna.

Symposiet fokuserar på namn i skrift och erbjuder möjligheten att reflektera kring skriftens signifikans

inom studiet av namn utifrån olika forskningsperspektiv.

Möjliga teman är:

- Namnens grafonomi, namn och ortografi

- Namnvård

- Namn i olika skriftsystem

- Språkutveckling i skrivna namn

- Skrivna namn i språkkontakt

Välkommen att inkomma med ditt abstrakt till föredrag eller poster senast den 20 februari 2018. Skicka

ditt abstrakt (max 300 ord utan referenser) till namniskrift@sprak.gu.se. Ange namn, e-postadress och

lärosäte i abstraktet. Besked om antagning ges senast den 30 april 2018.

Tid och plats:

Den 29 och 30 november 2018. Konferensen beräknas starta kl. 13 den 29 november 2018 och avslutas

den 30 november kl. 16. En middag på kvällen den 29:e är inplanerad. Konferensen kommer att äga rum

på Gamla Hovrätten, Olof Wijksgatan 6, Göteborg.

Föredragsspråk:

De nordiska språken och engelska. Konferensspråket är de nordiska språken.

Konferensavgiften:

400 SEK (tidig registrering senast 31 maj 2018), 500 SEK (sen registrering senast 30 september 2018),

konferensmiddag och lunch på fredagen ingår.

Names in Writing

Call for papers

29–30 November 2018, University of Gothenburg and Institute for Language and Folklore, Gothenburg

The study of writing has gained increasing importance within linguistics and culture studies in recent

years. The field has widened substantially focusing not only on graphemics and spelling principles, but

also on the mediality of writing, writing practices and social dimensions of writing. Within name studies,

the study of writing has not yet been recognized as a field in its own right, even though written names

have been a recurring subject of analysis. At the same time, there are studies outside the traditional field

of name studies that focus on written names from several of the above named perspectives.

The theme of this symposium is names in writing. It will give scholars a chance to reflect on the

significance of writing in the study of names and provide a platform to discuss approaches from different

fields.

Topics could include, but are not limited to:

- The graphemics of names, names and orthography

- Nomenclature

- Names in different writing systems

- Language development in written names

- Written names in language contact

- Typography and graphics of names

- Written name and identity

- Written name and authority

- Written names in the public sphere

We invite proposals for 20-minute paper presentations or for posters on any topic related to names in

writing, from both modern and historical contexts. Please send an abstract of up to 300 words (excluding

references) to namniskrift@sprak.gu.se by 20 February 2018. Include your name, email address and

affiliation in your abstract. Feedback and letters of acceptance will be provided by 30 April 2018.

Time and place:

29–30 November 2018. The conference will start at 13:00 on 29 November 2018 and end 16:00 on 30

November. A dinner is planned for the evening of 29 November. The conference will be held at Gamla

Hovrätten, Olof Wijksgatan 6, Gothenburg.

Conference fee:

400 SEK (early registration until the end of May 2018), 500 SEK (late registration until the end of

September 2018) includes conference dinner and lunch on Friday.

Publication:

We plan to publish conference proceedings using a peer review process. An invitation for submission of

contributions will be sent out separately after the conference.

The Cartography and Geographic Information Society announces AutoCarto 2016, an international research symposium on cartography, geospatial science, and visualization. The nineteenth in the AutoCarto series, the symposium will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on September 14-16, 2016. The conference will include ICA Commission Workshops, research presentations and poster sessions. The venue is the Historic Albuquerque Hotel in Historic Old Town. Hotel Albuquerque showcases New Mexican style through a unique blend of Spanish, Mexican, Native American and Western cultural influences reflected in the Hotel’s architecture, design and cuisine.

Symposium: First Names of the Finnic Peoples in the 13th -18th Centuries, Estonia, October 30, 2015

On the 30th of October, 2015, the Võro Institute will be holding a symposium on “First Names of the Finnic Peoples in the 13th -18th Centuries” in Obinitsa, Estonia. The purpose of the symposium is to bring together researchers working on the topics of anthroponymy and toponymy amongst the Finnic peoples. Names scholars whose work focuses on the influence of the Baltic and Slavic peoples upon the genesis of Finnic anthroponyms and/or toponyms are also invited to participate. Invited speakers for this event include Olga Karlova, Irma Mullonen (Petroskoi) as well as Sirkka Paikkala, and Janne Saarikivi (Helsenki).

First names of Finnic peoples in the 13th-18th centuries Läänemeresoomlaste eesnimed 13.-18. sajandil Õdagumeresuumlaisi edenimeq 13.-18. aastasaal Itämerensuomalaisten etunimet 1200-1700-luvuilla 30 October 2015 in Obinitsa The Võro Institute and Obinitsa, the Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture, invite you to participate in the symposium “First names of Finnic peoples in the 13th – 18th centuries” in Obinitsa. The symposium aims to bring together researchers of the anthroponymy and toponymy of the Finnic peoples. We are looking for presentations on pre-Christian anthroponyms and their preservation as later bynames and surnames. We also invite presentations that deal with medieval first names (and their adaptations) of different peoples and within different confessional and ecclesiastic borders. Presentations which focus on the change in anthroponyms in the period of warfare in the 16th-18th centuries and changing borders of confessions are also welcomed. We are also looking for presentations by researchers of toponyms whose work is closely related to anthroponyms. Of the invited presenters, Olga Karlova, Irma Mullonen (Petroskoi) Sirkka Paikkala and Janne Saarikivi (Helsinki) have confirmed that they will attend. Moreover, researchers of the onomastics of the Baltic and the Slavic peoples whose work is related to the genesis and changes of Finnic anthroponyms are urged to attend. The working languages of the conference will be the Finnic languages and English. No translation will be provided. Presentations can be in Russian if slides are in some other working language. Registration, fees and other relevant information To participate, please complete the registration form on the webpage http://www.wi.ee/index.php/konverents as soon as possible, indicating the title of your presentation. To participate with a presentation, please include an abstract (max. 250 words plus references) in one of the working languages by 15 September 2015. As the number of presentations is limited differently from our earlier conferences, those who register by 15 June 2015 will receive first preference. The length of presentations is 20 minutes (+10 minutes for discussion). We also welcome poster presentations. Revised and enlarged versions of papers will be peer-reviewed and published in the collection of articles Publications of the Võru Institute in 2016. The fee is 25 euros. This includes conference materials, transportation andmeals from Thursday evening through Saturday morning. Those who are coming from far away will require accommodation for two nights in the vicinity of Obinitsa. There are two options: either a cheaper and simpler overnight stay in Obinitsa or book accommodation on a nearby tourist farm. The closest tourist farms are the Setomaa Tourist Farmstead, Piusa Ürgoru Holiday Centre, Jõeveere Holiday Village-camp, Tabina Guesthouse and Sunny Beach Holiday House. Transportation to and from the venues of accommodation will be organized. Transport to Obinitsa will be arranged from and to the port of Tallinn and Tartu. The conference bus is scheduled to fit with the bus operating between St. Petersburg and Tartu. Announcement We are proud to announce the next symposium on place names in Clarens, Free State Province, South Africa, 17-18 September 2015, jointly organised by the IGU Commission/ICA Working Group on Toponymy and the Unit for Language Facilitation and Empowerment, University of the Free State (UFS). Topic of the symposium: “Place names, diversity and heritage” Spaces obtain meaning because of the role they play in human events or conceptualisations of the world. The descriptions and interpretations of these spaces are intertwined with human objectives and values. These could be determined by prevalent ideologies, whether political, social or cultural. As such, names are artefacts of social, political, cultural and demographic discourses. They importantly also serve as a reflection of identity, both cultural and collective, thereby denoting a range of diversities Given that society is dynamic and the accompanying determining factors are also in flux, names are sometimes changed to reflect new realities. In other instances they are left unchanged. Nevertheless, toponymic landscapes generally capture to a lesser or greater extent the diversity of their context and also largely relate strongly to the heritage of name givers. For many people changes in place names have a bearing on these aspects. One therefore often finds that orchestrated place name changes become an instrument of legitimation for one section of a society and are therefore being contested by another section of the society. This prompts questions about the management of place names in diverse societies and the role of heritage associated with place names. This symposium follows on the very recent one held in Rome, Italy (17 – 18 November 2014); and will follow shortly on the ones in Moscow and Rio de Janeiro, both in August 2015. It seeks to specifically investigate the relation between place names, diversity and heritage. The symposium will be hosted at theProtea Hotel but there is a range of accommodation alternatives available in town and everything is within walking distance of each other. The conference fee does not include transport. Clarens is approximately 300km from Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Durban (3 to 4 hours of driving away). There is no public transport, but delegates could rent a car, shuttle or chauffeur service. Maluti Footprints and Tours provides shuttle services as well as an assortment of tours.
