Le nuage des prénoms

source

The Encyclopedia of Mountain Altai Place-Names

After many years of hard work Prof. Molchanova managed to complete and get it published "The Encyclopedia of Mountain Altai Place-Names" in two volumes: Volume I contains 598 pages, Volume II has 506 pages. It is the second, expanded and revised, version of "Toponymic Dictionary of Mountain Altai", published in Gorno-Altaisk (the Russian Federation) in 1979 (scientific editor - Prof. A.T. Tybykova). The second edition contains more than 13000 topographical names of the Altai Republic, the origin of which receives a scientific explanation from the following families and language groups: Altaic (including Turkic and Mongolian languages), Indo-European, Finno-Ugric, Samoyedic, Yeniseian, and for a number of place-names the history of their occurrence is presented. The Encyclopedia is intended for a wide range of readers: linguists, geographers, historians and tourists.

Prof. Molchanova (Emeritus Professor of Linguistics, University of Szczecin) published it for her own money, that is why the number of copies is limited (just 100). No PDF version. The price of the book as suggested by the Publishing House is 110 euros + postal. The book may be interesting for people engaged in the study of aboriginal languages and the ancient and modern history of Siberia. Professor would be interested in the book distribution. If you want to buy it, will you, please, contact her via email 19000olga@gmail.com Thank you.

19000olga@gmail.com

Sacred place names in Sámi landscapes

Conference in Tromsø, 21–22 November 2019.

Place names have had a low priority in Norwegian linguistic research over the latest decades, and Sámi place names have always been a neglected field of study in all of the Sámi area. Even so, novel methods, theories, and technology have been developed that provide exciting new possibilities for interdisciplinary and comparative studies within this field. The present conference, which will be a contribution to UNs International year of indigenous languages, aims to summarize the status quo of research and requests for more knowledge about Sámi place names in the Nordic countries and North-West Russia, as well as to suggest a multidisciplinary way forward, starting with a sosioonomastic approach to Sámi sacred place names and past and present landscape use.
The conference will take place at the main campus of UiT in Tromsø.
Registration deadline: November 1.
Conference fee: 1500,- NOK
(Includes lunch both days and dinner Thursday evening)
The conference is initiated by the research group Creating the New North, organized and sponsored by UiT The Arctic University of Norway and Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Registration for the 2019 Autumn Day SNSBI Conference ‘Vikings and Names’ is open

Baia Mare, gazdă pentru lumea ştiinţifică internaţională

text + photos courtesy of Martyna Katarzyna Gibka

Changing Names: Tradition and Innovation in Ancient Greek Onomastics

link

Changing Names investigates, in relation to the ancient Greek world, the ways in which preferences in personal name-giving change: through shifts in population, cultural contact and imperialism, the popularity of new gods, celebrity status of individuals, increased openness to external influence, and shifts in local fashion.

Several major kinds of change due to cultural contact occurred: Greek names spread in regions outside Greece that were subject to Greek cultural influence (and later conquest), while conversely the Roman conquest of the Greek world led to various degrees of adoption of the Roman naming system; late in antiquity, Christianisation led to a profound but rather gradual transformation of the name stock. Individuals in culturally mixed societies sometimes bore two names, one for public or official use, one more domestic; but women of non-Greek origin were more likely to stick with indigenous names. 'Structural' changes (such as the emergence of the English surname) did not occur, though in late antiquity an indication of profession tended to replace the father's name as a secondary identifier; in some regions 'second' names became popular, perhaps in imitation of the longer Roman naming formulae. The volume is arranged partly thematically, partly through regional case studies (from within and beyond old Greece). Individuals who change their names (typically slaves after manumission) are also considered, as is the possibility that a name might change its 'meaning'.

International Workshop: The politics of place naming in Turkey

Neotoponymy

The politics of place naming in Turkey

Naming, Erasing, Re-naming: Political Uses of Place Names in Turkey

https://twitter.com/history_kurdish/status/1053695972876935171?s=20

The politics of place naming in Turkey have historically been dense and controversial. Naming and/or renaming places are political acts that affect daily lives, and often happen in conflictual terms and temporalities, through official and non-official mechanisms. This workshop brings together a multidisciplinary group of researchers and civil society actors to think the contemporary investment of the toponymical field in Turkey from a critical perspective.

Contemporary Turkey appears to be a hotspot in terms of political investment in the linguistic and semiotic fields. In a historical perspective, the politics of place naming in Turkey can be seen as a succession of periods characterized by radical or progressive ruptures with pre-existing orders through the mobilization of founding myths, new repertoires and figures.  We are interested in historical and contemporary official top-down state orchestrated naming policies and mechanisms, as well as non-official or semi-official bottom-up practices used by individuals active in minority politics, and social and political movements. We feel the necessity to think contemporary dynamics in light of historical erasures, repetitions, attempts and failures at restitutions of older names, and/or intrusions of new forms that accompany political and economic developments in Turkey. We are interested in navigating between scales, times, and spaces; from regional district names to street names, train stations to forests, damns to bridges or airports, schools to prisons, hospitals or cemeteries.
This workshop builds on the contributions of participants in the fields of toponymy, semiotics, history, urbanism, architecture, and the political uses of patrimonial and historical references. In the context of Turkey, working on the politics of place naming, also implies to draw on works on memory, trauma, political and social activism, and art.

The first day of the workshop is open to the public (program).

The second day is reserved to invited guests, with roundtable discussions on methodological issues particular to the Turkish context, efforts to sort emerging transversal issues, and comparative perspectives relevant to larger theoretical considerations in the field of toponymy and neo-toponymy.
Our collective work will be published in a peer-reviewed publication and aims to lead to the creation of a transnational observatory on toponymical transformations in Turkey.

Research questions in this workshop include but are not limited to the following topics:

  • Promotion and erasure of toponymical repertoires;
  • Processes of Turkification & modes of resistance;
  • Ottoman, néo-Ottoman, national and post-national historiographies;
  • Actors involved in place naming: National leaders and cults of personality, role of the bureaucracy & local administrations, private sector, civil society, political parties;
  • Gender and naming policies;
  • Geographies of trauma & archaeologies of violence in the politics of naming;
  • Methodologies and sources: archives, oral history, official and alternative cartographies;
  • Labelling, marketization, commodification;
  • Technologies of power & regime change;
  • Time scales, moments of change and transition in place naming
