The American Name Society Emerging Scholar Award

 Newsletter

In 2007, the American Name Society established the ANS Emerging Scholar Award (ANSESA) which recognizes the outstanding scholarship of a names researcher in the early stages of their academic or professional career. This special distinction is given to a young scholar whose work is judged by a panel of onomastic researchers to be of superior academic quality. This year’s selection committee is made up of Drs. Jan Tent (the ESA Committee Chair), Luisa Caiazzo, Dorothy Dodge Robbins, and Maggie Scott.

To be eligible for the ANSESA award, applicants must be an entry-level professional, an untenured academic, or a student, and have their singleauthored abstract accepted for presentation at the ANS annual conference. They must also be a member of the ANS. Winners of the ANSESA will not only receive a cash prize, but will also be mentored by a senior onomastics scholar who will assist the awardee in preparing his/her paper for submission and possible publication in the ANS journal, Names: A Journal of Onomastics. The paper will also be designated as the prize-winning student paper in the ANS annual meeting program.

How to Apply

To be considered for this award, applicants must submit the full text of their paper by midnight (E.S.T.) the 15th of October 2021 to both ANS President Laurel Sutton (laurela.sutton@gmail.com) and this year’s ESA Chair, Dr. Jan Tent (jan.tent@mq.edu.au).

Submissions must be sent as an email attachment in either a .doc or .docx format. For ease of processing, please be sure to include the keyword “ESA2021” in the subject line of your email.

Papers previously published are not eligible for consideration. However, papers based on unpublished theses or dissertations are eligible. The Emerging Scholar Award Selection Committee will judge all submissions for their methodological soundness, innovation, and potential contribution to the field of onomastic research. Past recipients of the Emerging Scholar award are eligible to re-apply for this award for an entirely new piece of scholarship. However, preference will be given to applicants who have not yet received the award. In addition, the Selection Committee reserves the right to refrain from giving this award in those years when no submission is deemed to have met the above-mentioned requirements.

Deadline for submissions: October 15, 2021

ANSESA: Submission Guidelines All submissions should be prepared according to the guidelines provided at (https://ansnames.pitt.edu/ans/guidelines). Authors are asked to use the formatting rules listed in the official style sheet of Names, the journal of the American Name Society. This information is available at the journal website: (https://ansnames.pitt.edu/ans/StyleSheet).

Submissions will not only be judged upon the quality of the writing and the scientific merit of the study presented, but also on their adherence to these formatting regulations.

NameExoWorlds: A global project in celebration of 100 years of IAU

link

In recent years, astronomers have discovered thousands of planets and planetary systems orbiting nearby stars. Some are small and rocky, like the Earth, whilst others are gas giants, like Jupiter. It is now believed that most stars in the Universe have planets orbiting them and that some of them have physical characteristics that resemble those of the Earth. The sheer number of stars in the Universe, each potentially with orbiting planets, along with the ubiquity of chemical species which are the building blocks of life, suggests that extraterrestrial life may be likely.

As part of the IAU's mission to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy through international cooperation, the IAU is the authority responsible for assigning official names to celestial bodies. Now, while celebrating its first 100 years of fostering international collaboration (IAU100), the IAU wishes to contribute to the fraternity of all people with a significant token of global identity. Following the first NameExoWorlds competition, which named 19 "ExoWorlds" in 2015, the IAU will now, within the framework of the IAU100 NameExoWorlds project, offer every country the chance to name one planetary system, comprising an exoplanet and its host star. Each country’s designated star is visible from that country, and sufficiently bright to be observed through small telescopes.

We encourage all people of Earth to consider themselves “Citizens of the Cosmos”, and set aside borders, wars, and cultural differences for a universal, peaceful view of humanity as just one race, possibly among many cosmic neighbours in the Universe.

Propose new place names for Canada

http://geonova.novascotia.ca/place-names

http://www.americannamesociety.org/propose-new-canadian-place-names/

The Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC) is inviting the general public to propose new place names for Canada. The accepted toponyms will be recorded in a national register, the Canadian Names Database. There is information on the proposal guidelines and review process specifically for Nova Scotia.

Find Your Way with Place Names

Everyone uses place names every day to describe where we are and where we want to go.
Place names on maps, signs and daily conversation help us identify historic, cultural and natural features on the landscape.   Name origins may reveal histories about the people, place and their community.
Propose New Place Name
Names evolve over time and new names can be proposed.  Name Applications may be submitted by anyone.  Proposals are reviewed and may be approved by the Nova Scotia representative on the Geographical Names Board of Canada.
Get Started:
  1. Read Guidelines
  2. Review Naming Process
  3. Propose New Name

How the Program Works

Since 1897, Official place names have been authorized through a national committee known today as the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC).  The GNBC creates and promotes the use of geographical naming standards across Canada.   Names are recorded in a national authoritative register known as the Canadian Geographical Names Database.  Official place names are the ones that appear on government maps.

Source Matters

We want names on maps to be reliable.  Access to authoritative information is key in helping people find their way.
Official Place Names are part of the foundation geography in the Nova Scotia Geospatial Infrastructure (NSGI).  Through this environment, the authoritative trusted source of place names is accessible to government and public.

Winners in Naming the Exoplanets

http://www.americannamesociety.org/winners-in-naming-the-exoplanets/

http://nameexoworlds.iau.org/names

There are planets that orbit our sun (e.g. Mercury, Saturn, and or beloved Earth) and there are planets that orbit around a star that is not our sun. These celestial bodies are called “exoplanets.”
This past spring, registered clubs and non-profit organizations were invited to suggest names for several exoplanets and stars. Among the winning bids came from the Kamagari Astronomical Observatory in Japan. This organization received the honor of bestowing the planet Ain b (epsilon Tauri b) the name Amateru, a common appellation for shrines devoted to the Shinto Sun goddess, Amaterasu. Nine-year-old names new asteroid

http://www.americannamesociety.org/nine-year-old-names-new-asteroid/

When an asteroid is discovered and its orbit is determined, it is given a provisional identification number. Sometime later, the celestial body may be issued a formal name to be listed by the International Astronomical Union. Recently, NASA held a contest inviting students under the age of 18 to name the asteroid number: 101955 199 RQ36.

Rules:
  • The name could not be longer than 16 characters.
  • It must be pronounceable in more than one language.
  • It could not be considered offensive.

By the time the contest deadline arrived, officials had received more than 8,000 suggestions from school children from around the world.
After reviewing this proposals, judges finally selected the name Bennu which was sent in by 9 year old Michael Puzio from North Carolina. According to officials, what made this name the winner was meaningful history. A mythological name for a large heron, the symbol of Osiris, the name Bennu means “the Ascending One” which brilliantly reflects the fact that in 2023, the asteroid will rise and shine across Earth’s night sky.
In September 2016, NASA will launch a spacecraft to take samples from Bennu. The name of this special mission is OSIRIS-Rex, an acronym for the “Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer.”

Michael Puzio, age 9 Michael Puzio

North Carolina, United States

Proposed name: Bennu

Justification for the name: "Bennu was a large heron and the living symbol of Osiris. The winged OSIRIS-REx and its heron-like TAGSAM also evoke attributes of Bennu, as does the egg shape of the asteroid itself. Bennu means 'The Ascending One', 'to shine' and suits the NEO which will shine in our skies in 2023 at the return of OSIRIS-REx."
What do you want to see next in space? "Fly a million more missions, to go to other galaxies, and to send astronauts to Mars!!"

Give a name to a new Russian spaceship

Rocket and Space Corporation "Energia" has announced a competition for the romantics

At the International Aviation and Space Salon ISS-2015 has been shown mock-up model of the promising transport system that should replace the famous "Soyuz".
- It will be manned transport system of the new generation, - said Chief Executive Vladimir Solntsev.- Its command module will be for the first time made of composite material and can withstand temperatures of over 200 degrees. The ship should be nice and impressive: I am sure that ugly ship will not fly. The new ship will be reusable. It is designed for 10 flights at least. In contrast to the "Soyuz", it is able to take on board from four to six astronauts. And in the autonomous flight mode, the ship can accommodate up to 30 days. But it has no name. Therefore, we are announcing an open competition for the best name for the new spaceship!
Dates of competition - from 30 August to 2 November 2015. The results will be announced on January 15, 2016.
The winner will be announced by jury after the public vote. The main prize will be a trip to Baikonur with the ability to attend a manned launch in the spring of 2016.
You can submit your proposals in Russian here: http://gagarin.energia.ru/konkurs-ptk-np.html

NameExoWorlds

http://www.nameexoworlds.org/

I would call it "ASTRONOMASTICS"

The NameExoWorlds contest, organised by the IAU and Zooniverse, is now entering its next stage. The 20 most popular ExoWorlds have been made available for naming proposals from registered clubs and non-profit organisations.
Although people have been naming celestial objects for millennia, the IAU has the task of assigning scientifically recognised names to newly discovered celestial bodies by its member countries. The NameExoWorlds contest provides not only the first opportunity for the public to name exoplanets, but also, for the first time in centuries, to give popular names to some stars — those that have known exoplanets in orbit around them.
The list of the 20 ExoWorlds can be found here. Some of them are single-planet systems, while others are multiple-planet systems. Each organisation can submit one naming proposal, for one ExoWorld only. The number of names that need to be submitted depends on which system is selected. For single- and multiple-planet systems, a name for each planet must be submitted, as well as one for the host star. In the 20 ExoWorlds list, five stars already have common names. Consequently, these five stars cannot be considered for public naming. There are 15 stars and 32 planets (47 objects in total) available for naming. The name of the 20 host stars are explained and personal messages from some discoverers are also available here.
To participate in the contest, clubs and non-profit organisations must first register with the IAU Directory of World Astronomy. The deadline for registrations has been extended to 23:59 UTC on 1 June 2015.
The naming proposals can be submitted here. All naming submissions having to abide by the IAU Exoplanet naming conventions and must be supported by a detailed argument for their choice. The deadline for submitting naming proposals is 23:59 UTC on 15 June 2015.
Once this stage has concluded, the public worldwide will be invited to vote on their favourite proposed names.
The final results are expected to be announced at a special public ceremony held during the IAU XXIX General Assembly in Honolulu, USA, 3–14 August 2015.

http://azbuka.in.ua/konkurs-onomastika-donbassa-stranica-voprosov-i-konsultacij/

- развитие у молодого поколения интереса к истории, культуре, традициям родного края;

- выявление творческого и исследовательского потенциала молодых ученых;
- расширение путей взаимодействия средней и высшей школы;
- разностороннее изучение происхождения названий географических объектов и функционирования личных имён на территории Донбасса;
- привлечение и формирование ценностных ориентиров будущих ученых-ономастов Донбасса;
- Доклад;
- Сочинение-размышление о собственных именах родного края;
