Foundation for Medieval Genealogy

Administration

The FMG is managed by an Executive Committee, whose members are the charity trustees under English law. It is funded wholly by donations and subscriptions. The formal constitution is available on request, and may be viewed online by Registered Users and Members.

Objectives

  • to advance public education in the study of medieval genealogy and prosopography
  • to promote research into medieval genealogy
  • to publish the results of that research

Participation

Anyone with an interest in medieval genealogy or prosopography is invited to subscribe either as a user-member, with online access to our journal, or as a full member (online access plus printed journal) (click here for further details). Journal-only subscriptions are also available, particularly useful for institutional members.
An Annual General Meeting is held, usually accompanied by a guest lecture. We welcome suggestions for additional activities and events.
We offer members the opportunity to publish their medieval genealogical research, either as articles in the journal, or as web-pages hosted by FMG. All submissions are subject to expert review as a form of quality control.

Scope

The FMG has defined medieval, for the purpose of its activities, as before 1500 AD. We are principally interested in links from this period to modern genealogy (16th to 21st centuries), including the identification of "gateway" ancestors for colleagues in north America. Geographically the scope is mainly European, but we are open to wider interests. The working language is English but we are keen to link with individuals and organisations operating in other languages, including the development of English versions of good quality research data prepared in other languages.

Activities

FMG has a specialist library, with an online catalogue. The main book collection is housed in Oxford, and can be consulted by FMG members by prior arrangement. Click here for further information.
  • A journal, Foundations, is available to all Users and Members, and may be purchased by others on a subscription basis.
  • We publish books and monographs on an occasional basis - see our online shop for details. We are open to proposals for new publications.
  • We have a number of online projects - use the website menu for access. We welcome proposals for new online projects.
  • An electronic newsletter provides a forum for members' queries or discussion.
Please note, the FMG is not able to undertake personal research for individuals.
