- Language: Ukrainian
- Subject(s): Language and Literature Studies
- Issue: 1/LV/2016

- No. of Pages: 6
- Keywords: anthroponyms; personal names; appellatives; semantic-lexical; word-formation
- Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyse common nouns denoting people, animals and objects that occur in the Western Polissian dialects of the Ukrainian language and which are identical with personal names (first names) and/or their variations. It was found that some of these appellatives originate from the names of specific persons, gaining general popular use as such through certain (usually negative) character traits of that person. Other very popular and widely used names are given to beloved animals, while a less significant number of appellatives evolved through the process of folk etymology, when words of foreign origin were similar to real personal names.

- Keywords: name formant; topoformant; appellative; primary lexical topoformant; secondary lexical topoformant
- Summary/Abstract: Some types of proper names have their own name formants which are specific to them: these elements of place names are generally called topoformants. The geographical common noun components of place names can be considered as primary lexical topoformants if the geographical common noun fulfils its type marker role in such a way that this function coincides with the dictionary meaning of the geographical common noun. In this case the role of the common noun and therole of the common noun in the place name are entirely the same, they overlap, e.g. Nagy-völgy ’big valley’, Újfalu’new village’, Eastwood’Eastern wood’, Netherton’lower village’, Düsseldorf’a village near the river Düssel’.On the contrary, the secondary topoformant is a common noun in place names which doesn’t originally fulfil the type marker role, but due to the frequent use it aquires this role as a part of a name type. This function, however, doesn’t exert influence on the dictionary meaning of the formant. For example, the lexemes egyház’church’, monostor’monastery’, híd’bridge’ or vár’castle’ are secondary topoformants of settlement names in Hungarian. For instance, initially the names with the posterior component egyház’church’ were formed by metonymy, after the church of the given settlement (e.g. Kerekegyház ’round church’). Nevertheless subsequently the existing names have served as a model to the other name formations, thus in the Hungarian language villages with churches were marked the names with posterior component egyház’church’, e.g. Őregyház ’village with church called Őr’, Vidaegyház ’village with church called Vida’.Naturally the alignment with the name modelscan bea characteristic feature in other languages as well.
Kontinuita anoikonymie v jihomoravském pohraničí
(On Ways of Preserving Continuity of Anoikonymy in the Borderline Regions of South Moravia)
- Publication: (1/LV/2016)
- Author(s): Michaela Boháčová
- Contributor(s):
- Language: Czech
- Subject(s): Language and Literature Studies
- Issue: 1/LV/2016
- Page Range: 25-32
- No. of Pages: 8
- Keywords: toponyms; anoikonyms; minor place-names; borderline area; Moravia; continuity
- Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with continuity of anoikonymy on the material of currently used minor place-names in villages in the borderline regions of South Moravia. The focus is on the term continuity in anoikonymy (toponymy, respectively) itself and especially on specific realizations, i.e. on how present-day names follow the pre-war German ones. The paper also provides an analysis of the individual types of the relationships among pre-war and post-war (present-day) names (borrowing a name, its translation, an independently created name etc.).

The part of the Pohořelice toponymy that is still known and used at present is dealt with in detail, attention is also paid to respondents from the viewpoint of generations they belong to and to the types of named objects. The text also includes a table with names contained in the sources from the mid-18th century to the present day.
Nazewnictwo miejskie, a wiejskie mikrosystemy toponimiczne
(Urban Names Versus Rurual Toponymic Microsystem)
- Publication: (1/LV/2016)
- Author(s): Maria Czaplicka-Jedlikowska
- Contributor(s):
- Language: Polish
- Subject(s): Language and Literature Studies
- Issue: 1/LV/2016
- Page Range: 53-60
- No. of Pages: 8
- Keywords: new tendencies; urban toponymy; rural toponymy
- Summary/Abstract: The direct inspiration for my assessment of currently created rural toponymic microsystems was the change in property numbers and the naming of old country paths in my district of Koronowo and in the neighbouring district of Osielsko. New road and street names in rural areas are an addition to the toponymic resources.Having analysed selected examples of street names from rural toponymic microsystems, I observed a high repeatability rate. In the district of Koronowo, this refers to 30 names, and in the district of Osielsko to as many as 40! Consequently, the level of toponymic differentiation is low in these areas, both in terms of tradition and the organization of the social and cultural setting. The engagement of users in the naming process is minimal. A new trend is the domination of arbitral names, which constitute as many as 50 % of all road names in the district of Koronowo and nearly 80 % in the district of Osielsko. It is a testament to poor qualifications of the officials, who initiate the creation process of this system. They have difficulty in communicating with local residents with regard to the creation of the rural toponymic microsystem – being a new phenomenon as opposed to the long-established urban toponymy. It is a pity that they do not cooperate with linguists, onomasticians or historians of the region.Usually, the semantic and structural features used in new rural names are those that are common in the urban naming system. This means that the names of streets and roads (sometimes very small ones!) are – as can be seen in the examined material – a selective import from the urban culture. They do not fully express the character of the area, as they fail to make any reference to its historical or cultural heritage, despite the fact that these areas boast interesting historical backgrounds, related, for instance, to the struggle for independence in various periods, and are also full of geographical points of interest.Compared with politically-driven names of streets and new natural features (e.g. new lakes in the village of Kręgle, or the Grabina Park and the Wyczółkowski Grove), names commemorating historical events or topographical changes would simply have an associative value.

- Summary/Abstract: The text focuses on chrematonyms and their function in selected literary texts of two Czech authors, Bohumil Hrabal and Ota Pavel. Chrematonyms in Hrabal's short stories create a contrast of gray communist regime in fifties to the diversity of prewar life, whereas prose of Ota Pavel serves as an evocation of memories of a happy childhood and teenage years in Prague and Berounka river.

- Issue: 1/LV/2016
- Page Range: 69-80
- No. of Pages: 12
- Keywords: onymy in computer games; MMORPG games; fantasy; forms and functions of proper names
- Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on proper names in a text-based computer game Fallathan Chronicles 2. It discusses MMORPG games, and fantasy space that influences onymy in the game. The proper names in the game bear a close resemblance to proper names known from fantasy literature. Thus, it may be concluded that the central category for analysis of such names is space. The main classes of names that appear in the game include geographical names and the names of various creatures – both humans and characters belonging to different races (for instance elves and dwarfs). Proper names are employed to emphasize the otherness of the presented world; therefore, the authors of the game often introduce foreign words and phonemes. They also use the so-called name generator to create words that are random combinations of syllables. The article discusses main functions and forms of onyms and provides motivations behind using proper names. The analysis points to intertextual functions of some of the names.

- Issue: 1/LV/2016
- Page Range: 81-91

- Keywords: literary onomastics; proper names; translation
- Summary/Abstract: Literary onomastics should pay more attention to the problem of translation of proper names in literature. In translation practice we can see three general attitudes: domestication (substitution of original names by Czech ones), exotization (leaving of original names unchanged because of their exotic atmosphere) or a mix of these methods (some names are translated, some are not).I have described several methods of translating proper names: calque (word-for-word translation), transcription (representing a name from one script in another), substitution (change of an original name), explication (adding of information) and generalization (change of a proper name into a common noun).

Výslovnost maďarských jmen u českých mluvčích: korespondence předchozí znalosti a realizované výslovnosti

- Publication: (1/LV/2016)
- Author(s): Lucie Jílková
- Contributor(s):
- Language: Czech
- Subject(s): Language and Literature Studies
- Issue: 1/LV/2016
- Page Range: 121-132
- No. of Pages: 12
- Keywords: hungarian names; pronunciation
- Summary/Abstract: This article illustrates the tendencies in pronouncing selected Hungarian names by Czech speakers. When choosing the names, two main criteria were considered: 1) that the names were likely to be familiar to Czech speakers and simultaneously 2) that they contained a sound with problematic pronunciation. The selected names were incorporated in test sentences, which the respondents recorded on a voice recorder. The number of respondents was 65. After the recording, the respondents marked the names they had already known. The aim of my analysis was to find the extent to which previous knowledge influences pronunciation. In most cases, respondents with previous knowledge were more successful compared to those without any knowledge and achieved the appropriate pronunciation more frequently when employing the principle of phonological approximation, e.g. Sándor Petőfi [ʃaːndor pɛtɛːfɪ] and sometimes when employing the original pronunciation, e.g. [ʃaːndor pɛtœːfɪ]. However, in the case of the toponym Harkány, surname Rákóczi and first name Lajos, the previous knowledge did not play any role, and both groups of respondents pronounced these names almost equally, most frequently [harkaːnɪ], [raːkoʧɪ], [laːjoʃ]. The most frequent principle employed was the spelling (graphic) pronunciation, e.g. Frigyes [frɪgɪjes], Sólyom [soːlɪjom], Arany [aranɪ], Harkány [harkaːnɪ], including a variety of modifications such as frequent changes in the vowel length, e.g. Sándor [saːndoːr]. Respondents without any previous knowledge of the names often showed a wide range of pronunciation varieties.

- Issue: 1/LV/2016
- Page Range: 133-146

- Keywords: onomastics; unofficial personal names; Paprad
- Summary/Abstract: In this article we characterize the functional element “name of the family” in the unofficial personal names of married women in Paprad settlement (a part of the town Stará Turá, west Slovakia). This is the second most frequent functional element and it represents 22,36 % of all functional elements. 61,6 % of functional elements “name of the family” has not the identical anthropobase with the surname, that is pointing to greater independence of the official naming. We distinguish “name of the family” with anthropobase a) identical with the anthropobase of the surname, b) identical with the anthropobase of the “name of the house”, c) different from the anthropobase of the surname and the anthropobase of the “name of the house”. Moreover the functional element “name of the family” does not need to be identical with unofficial personal name of the family as the separate family name.

- No. of Pages: 11
- Keywords: German Protestants; Flemish Catholics; religion; names giving; baptism registers
- Summary/Abstract: The topic of this paper are female first names in the 19th century. They have been given by Flemish Catholics and German Protestants to their daughters. The girls had been baptized in St. Geertrui Church in Leuven (Flanders) and St. Catherine Church in Brunswick (Germany) in the period 1838–1898. The data were taken from the baptism registers of these churches. The quantity of names, their frequency, origin and forms have been examined. The names had been classified to several groups according to their sort. The set of first names and its changes in Germany and Flanders have been compared. There are differences between the number of names, the interest for some names and the type of names in German protestant and Flemish catholic communities. Although Reformation and the Counter-Reformation had left some restrictions for the giving of names for the Catholic and Protestants, the confessors seemed in the 19th century not to pay much attention to these orders and have been motivated probably by other reasons as well.

- Keywords: Serbian onomastics; motivation behind the toponyms; toponyms’ name change; name of the town of Ćuprija
- Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the motivation and historical development behind the name change of the Serbian town Ćuprija, located at the confluence of the Ravanica and Velika Morava. Microtoponymy shows that the large lowland river was crossed in several traditional ways in the past: (a) people crossed the river in a place called “brod” (ford), (b) they crossed over by ferry, (c) there was a pontoon bridge and (d) a wooden, or stone bridge (ćuprija) was built; and the settlement built there would get a different name, depending on the significance it had for that area, or it would be named after the object used to cross the river at the time. Historical sources and contemporary onomastics confirm that there were several layers of civilization, depending on the invaders who held this territory since ancient times, and peoples who lived here in turns were the Romans, Avars, Huns, Byzantines, Slavs, Turks and Serbs. The motivation behind the name has affected the town’s name changes: (1) Roman settlement Horreum Margi (horreum – granary, Margi – Morava), (2) Byzantine town Horreum Planum (planum – plain), (3) medieval Serbian town Ravno (ravan – plain), (4) Turkish town Hisar Morava (hisar – town), Köprü, (4) the name of the town today is Ćuprija (after the orientalism: köprü – ćuprija, bridge).

A Linguistic-Typological Study of the Mountain Names of two Mountain Ranges in Medieval Hungary

- Keywords: mountain names; Slavic names; Hungarian names; semantic and lexical bases of name giving
- Summary/Abstract: In my article I introduce the name layers found in old mountain name stock in the Carpathian. During the course of my study, besides the comparison of the linguistic-chronological layers of the names (Slavic names and Hungarian names), I also apply the aspect of location: I compare the names of two mountain ranges from a linguistic point of view. In the comparative study of the Slavic and Hungarian name layers, the most important differences are between the proportions of one- and two-part names. The Hungarian mountain name stock is dominated by two-part names, or at least, the two kinds of structures are more or less balanced. In contrast, in the Slavic name stock, there is the hegemony of one-part names. This clearly shows the basic differences between the name-giving customs of the two peoples. In my study regional differences were also shown. Significant differences are shown between the name-creating and name-changing customs of the two peoples. While the majority of (Hungarian) names of internal genesis were created in both areas by syntagmatic construction, i.e by compounding, similar ways of formation can scarcely be found among the Slavic names. However, name creation by formants is characteristic of the Slavic name layer, whereas it is peripheral among Hungarian mountain names. Of the differences between the two mountain ranges, it is worth pointing out that the names of the Northern range appear in the Hungarian name system without formal changes more often. As opposed to this, the names of Slavic origin of the Southern range have structurally been better adapted to the Hungarian name system and thus became two-part names in greater proportion by being combined with geographical common nouns.

- Summary/Abstract: Between 1714 and 1715, enrollments in the registry of births in the parishes at the Plasy monastery document in 70‒100 % of baptisms as first name Evženie or Evžen. It is certain that this phenomenon is related to abbot Evžen Tyttl. Perhaps in this way he was trying to leave behind a trail and he compensated to the parents their charges of baptism in the case that their child was named after him.

- Summary/Abstract: Most strings of female surnames registered in the Czech Republic are lexically different from related male surnames. This article provides a method of grouping surnames by similarity and computing surname frequencies for these grouped surnames. The method reduces the 251,723 registered surname variants to 142,586 groups. Grouped surname frequencies can be used for linguistic research of similar surnames, determining geographic distribution of surnames, or by researchers which require surname frequencies irrespective of gender.
Příspěvek k historickému vývoji protetického v- u českých oikonym

- Issue: 1/LV/2016
- Page Range: 290-296
- No. of Pages: 4
- Keywords: oikonyms; Old Czech; phonology; prothetic v-
- Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the territorial spread of prothetic v- as a specific phonetic phenomenon of Czech. The analysis is focused on the old oikonyms excerpted from toponomastic lexicons in the manner of S. Utěšený. The research shows that 1) the inspected oikonyms (or generally onyms) are more benevolent to the prothetic v- than common nouns; 2) nonetymological v- is common in oikonyms from historical Bohemia and western Moravia since the second half of the 16th century, other regions (southern Bohemia, majority of Moravia and Silesia) conserve oikonymic forms without v-; 3) oikonyms have some specifics, e.g. lexicalization of prothetic v- or hypercorrection (elimination of etymological v-) more frequently than appellatives.
Hydronymum Labe a jeho derivační potenciál v toponymii Čech

- Issue: 1/LV/2016
- Page Range: 297-304
- No. of Pages: 7
- Keywords: onomastics; hydronymy; toponymy; Labe; Czech toponymical system
- Summary/Abstract: The paper is focused on the specificity of the hydronym Labe in Czech toponymical system, investigating especially its role in derivation of toponyms (most often anoikonyms), but also its occurrence in prepositional and multiple-word names. It becomes obvious that the use of this hydronym in creation of toponyms differs substantially from other hydronyms, whose use is very limited. The toponyms referring to other rivers most often derive from the common nouns řeka ‘river’ or voda ‘water’ (only rarely from the particular hydronym), whereas these common nouns never refer to the river Labe in Czech toponymy. Furthermore, some affixes used for deriving toponyms from the hydronym Labe are otherwise not used for the creation of toponyms from toponymical bases. These findings result into the conclusion that the hydronym Labe functions similarly to a common noun in the Czech toponymical system.

The anoikonyms are also categorized according to the scheme of basic structures of Slovak anoikonyms. The material obtained and processed can be further used in areal and digital processing of Slovak anoikonyms.
