Entitled “Place Names and Geology in the Joyce Country and Western Lakes region”, this bilingual English/Irish booklet follows and adds to the expert works of the late Fiachra McGowan and the late Tim Robinson by focussing on the geological and geomorphological features recorded in place names in Ireland with more specific examples from the region.

Our region has fascinating examples of such links like in Cloghbrack (an Chloch Bhreac – the speckled rock) or Aill Dubh (Black Cliff) which directly link with the colour of their local bedrock. Places like Ballintubber (Baile an Tobar – the townland of the well) tell us about our karst landscape in limestone and others like Clogher (an Clochar – the rocky place) remind us of the ice-sheets that left stones in our soil. The booklet also provides tools to research your local geology all over Ireland with a glossary of frequent terms used.

Trish Walsh, chair of JCWL GeoEnterprise, said: “We believe the booklet will be of interest to everyone, whether they come with local knowledge, an understanding of geology, or a love of words and language. It is written in a very accessible way and is beautifully presented.”

Tá leabhrán nua ina ndéanfar plé ar an ngaol idir geolaíocht agus logainmneacha le lainseáil Dé Ceadaoin seo chugainn an 14ú Aibreán ó 6pm go 7pm le imeacht fíorúil saor in aisce. Is é DSLI GeoTreallús (nó JCWL GeoEnterprise) a rinne an foilseachán seo agus tá sé maoinithe ag Suirbhéireacht Gheolaíochta Éireann. Leanann sé agus cuireann sé le saothar Fhiachra Mhic Gabhann agus Tim Robinson, beirt nach maireann, trí dhíriú isteach ar ghnéithe geolaíocha agus geomoirfeolaíocha a bhfuil taifead déanta orthu i logainmneacha na hÉireann chomh maith le samplaí faoi leith ó réigiún an tionscadail. Tá samplaí iontacha inár réigiún de naisc den sórt sin mar atá sa Chloch Bhreac nó an Aill Dubh ina bhfeictear go díreach an nasc le dath na buncharraige áitiúla. Ar a bharr sin, tá eolas i logainmneacha mar Bhaile an Tobair faoinár dtírdhreach boireannach aolchloiche agus cuireann áiteanna eile cosúil le Clochar i gcuimhne dúinn na hoighearshruthanna a d’fhág clocha sa talamh. Tá bealaí sa leabhrán chun taighde a dhéanamh ar do gheolaíocht áitiúil ar fud na hÉireann le gluais de théarmaí a mbaintear úsáid astu go minic.

The launch, which can be accessed through zoom with the link above, will feature a short discussion on the production of the booklet and around place names in Ireland and abroad. The digital copy of the booklet will then be available on both our irish language page as well as on our learning page with some limited printed copies available on request.
