Conference: 25th International Congress of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS)

Onomastics » Conference: 25th International Congress of Onomastic Sciences (ICOS)

ICOS 2014 is the 25th International Congress of Onomastic Sciences, the premier conference in the field of name studies, organised triennially by the International Council of Onomastic Sciences. The University of Glasgow is delighted to host it this year and the conference will take place from the 25th to 29th of August.
The theme of the Congress is “Names and their Environment”. Names of all kinds (those of people, places, animals and objects) emerge, function and are studied within a wide range of environments. These can include commerce and economy, genealogy and history, geography and landscape, linguistics and literature, but also medicine and psychology, law and politics, religion, society and technology. All of these and more will feature in the papers and posters to be presented at the Congress.  ICOS 2014 has already attracted wide international interest and is currently set to have 270 speakers (with 217 papers and 8 posters) from 45 countries presenting in three different languages (English, German and French).
Professor Richard Coates, from the University of the West of England, will present a keynote lecture on ‘Family Names in the UK and Beyond’.  Associate Professor Peder Gammeltoft, from the University of Copenhagen, will speak on ‘Onomastics for all: How can new technology help broaden the appeal of name research?’, whilst Dr Simon Taylor from University of Glasgow will present on ‘Charting a course through the Scottish Namescape’.
