Yekaterinburg Politicians Consider Naming Street After Boris Nemtsov

The local legislature in Yekaterinburg was scheduled to vote Tuesday on a proposal to name a street after Boris Nemtsov — the Russian opposition politician who was gunned down near the Kremlin late February.

The proposal to name a street after Nemtsov, who was a staunch critic of the policies of President Vladimir Putin, has the support of Yekaterinburg Mayor Yevgeny Roizman, RIA Novosti news agency reported Saturday.

Roizman said the Ural Mountains city had plenty of streets that could carry Nemtsov's name, but that the final decision would be made by the city's residents.

Allies of Nemtsov have already unofficially dubbed the Moskvoretsky Bridge across the Moscow River, where Nemtsov was murdered, the "Nemtsov Bridge."

Nemtsov was shot in the back four times times as he crossed the bridge on foot with his girlfriend on Feb. 27.

Several suspects were arrested on Sunday and one man, Zaur Dadayev, has reportedly confessed to the crime, citing religious motives, media said.

Moscow's independent radio station Ekho Moskvy has also proposed naming a street in the Russian capital in Nemtsov's honor.
