Isle of Axholme Place-Names: Discovering the landscape through the language of place-names

This website has been created to complement the Isle of Axholme Exhibition taking place from March to October 2022 at the North Lincolnshire Museum. At the exhibition place-name research is showcased alongside a celebration of the work of the Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Landscape Partnership, which aims to reconnect the local community with their unique landscape and heritage. You can also visit the exhibition via a virtual tour from the comfort of your own home.

Studying place-names can help us to discover valuable information about the language, history, and landscape of the places where we live. In each themed menu you will find sub-menus with additional information relating to the theme. For example, in this menu you can read about The Isle Through Time, investigate the links in the Ride Around Axholme, and experience the landscape of Crowle Moors. Discover more about place-names, including a clickable map, field-names and watery names, in the Place-Names menu. A range of educational materials suitable for use in schools and adult education settings is provided in the Resources menu. The Talks and Workshops menu lists a broad programme of events running alongside the exhibition. Finally, Meet the Author – feedback and suggestions are welcome!

This website has been designed by Kathryn Bullen, PhD researcher in place-names in the School of English at the University of Nottingham, and is part of a Midlands4Cities funded placement.

Kathryn’s research aims to discover what place-names in the Isle of Axholme can tell us about the historical change to society and culture in North Lincolnshire, which lies within the area historically known as the Danelaw.

Presentation of the Toponimízate 2022 Campaign

The President of the Royal Galician Academy, Víctor F. Freixanes, and the Secretary General of Linguistic Policy, Valentín García, presented the Toponimizate 2022 campaign on 8th June 2022, the initiative to disseminate Galician toponymy that will reach 17 municipalities in the country.

An important part of the Toponimízate Initiative focuses on the collaborative toponymic collection platform created jointly by Real Academia Galega and Xunta de Galicia, Galicia Nomeada, which already has more than 2600 collaborators. Thanks to them, more than 43,000 microtoponyms have been recovered and made available to all Galician citizens online since the public launch of this digital tool, at the end of 2019.

"Johnny Appleseed: Proper Names and the Common Apple" by Christine De Vinne

ANS 2022, January 22, 2022 "Johnny Appleseed: Proper Names and the Common Apple" Christine De Vinne (Ursuline College, Cleveland, Ohio, USA) Grown commercially in 32 states, with an annual crop of over 11 billion pounds, the apple is one of the most popular fruits consumed in the US. Nutritious, easy to transport, and readily available, the apple is so widely sold that many of its varieties have become household words: Granny Smith, McIntosh, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, and more. This paper explores multiple ways in which proper names are associated with this common fruit. The apple’s scientific name, Malus domestica, points to the species Malus, which originated in Asia in wild form, now classified as Malus sieversii. Today the domestic species include close to 8,000 cultivars, each propagated from cuttings rather than unreliable pips. Modern US agriculture promotes particular varieties, which twenty-first century marketing highlights in advertisements and sells to the public at different price points, some related to crop production, others to taste, texture, and appearance. Among the human species, many orchardists and enthusiasts around the world have found their names interwoven with that of the fruit, including Australian midwife Maria Anne Smith, source of the Granny Smith, and nurseryman and Swedenborgian missionary John Chapman, better known in the US Midwest as Johnny Appleseed. Combining insights from the study of scientific names, commercial names, and anthroponyms, the paper discusses the naming history of the apple, humans whose names are associated with its cultivation, and some projections about the fate of curiously named heirloom apples in the face of decreasing bio-diversity. A 25-year member and past president of ANS, Christine De Vinne studies names in their literary and cultural contexts. As book review editor and member of the Editorial Board for Names: A Journal of Onomastics.
