Project "The Power of Labels: The Meaning and Use of Names for Identities and Conditions"

link

2022 KR. 1.273.650

Katrine Kehlet Bechsgaard

Title and degree: Postdoctoral Fellow, PhD

Institution: University of California, Berkeley

Grant type: Reintegration Fellowships

What

What are the societal and social causes and effects of the ways in which minority identities and conditions are named? This is the question that the project seeks to answer. I will study official and unofficial labels used for various identities and conditions based on for example ethnicity, sexuality, and mental conditions, such as nydansker, transkønnet, and autist, in order to gain knowledge of developments, perceptions, patterns, and phases of label use.

Why

Throughout time, identities and conditions have changed both names and connotations. Danish outdated examples include kejthåndet, fruentimmer, fremmedarbejder, homofil and DAMP-barn. Currently, there is a massive focus on naming and labeling of identities and conditions in the public debate in the Western world, and we need better understandings of the causes and effects of attaching labels to various groups in society as well as how labels and attitudes towards them change over time.

How

The project will get to the core of the nature of naming minority groups and look for developments and patterns in the ways in which these labels have been used and perceived over the past three decades. To track recent developments in which labels are used, and how they are used, I will collect data from Danish newspapers from the past three decades as well as do in-depth interviews with individuals belonging to minority groups.

Le nom et l'au-delà du nom :
Anthroponymie et littérature algérienne d'expression française

Du 5 au 6 avril 2023

Argumentaire

Axe 1 : les œuvres publiées de 1940 à 1953 ;
Axe 2 : les œuvres publiées de 1954 à 1962 ;
Axe 3 : les œuvres publiées de 1963 à 1990 ;
Axe 4 : les œuvres publiées de 1991 à 2002 ;
Axe 5 : les œuvres publiées de 2003 à 2018 ;

Naming and Mapping the Gods in the Ancient Mediterranean

 link

What a nice surprise for Christmas! This exciting book is fully available in open access.

Naming and Mapping the Gods in the Ancient
Mediterranean

Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries

Ancient religions are definitely complex systems of gods, which resist our understanding. Divine names provide fundamental keys to gain access to the multiples ways gods were conceived, characterized, and organized. Among the names given to the gods many of them refer to spaces: cities, landscapes, sanctuaries, houses, cosmic elements. They reflect mental maps which need to be explored in order to gain new knowledge on both the structure of the pantheons and the human agency in the cultic dimension. By considering the intersection between naming and mapping, this book opens up new perspectives on how tradition and innovation, appropriation and creation play a role in the making of polytheistic and monotheistic religions.
Far from being confined to sanctuaries, in fact, gods dwell in human environments in multiple ways. They move into imaginary spaces and explore the cosmos. By proposing a new and interdiciplinary angle of approach, which involves texts, images, spatial and archeaeological data, this book sheds light on ritual practices and representations of gods in the whole Mediterranean, from Italy to Mesopotamia, from Greece to North Africa and Egypt. Names and spaces enable to better define, differentiate, and connect gods.

V bádání počítají i s nejnovějším vývojem v lingvistice — využívají textové korpusy, kvantitativní analýzy a neopomíjejí ani výzkum jmen jako součásti jazykové krajiny.

New book release – Jaroslav David, Tereza Klemensová, Michal Místecký et al. Od etymologie ke krajině — onomastika pro 21. století [From Etymology to Landscape — Onomastics for the 21st Century]. Ostrava – Brno, 2022, 444 pages.

The new book, consisting of 27 chapters grouped into four thematic sections, has attempted to answer a question that is hinted at in the title itself: What does onomastics offer to the 21st century? What are the prospects for a specialized field of research which has been an established linguistic discipline for a few decades only? In line with the principles of “Ostrava onomastic school”, the insights focus on functioning of names in discourse and try to overcome the etymology-based approaches dominating the discipline in the 20th century.  That is why the authors present new methodologies in the proper name research – mostly based on quantitative and corpus linguistics and on the concepts of political and linguistic landscapes. Attention is paid to a wide range of subjects, including literary criticism, politics, sociology, history, geography, demography, and marketing.The book, published in Czech, contains comprehensive summaries in English, German, and Polish.

e-Onomastics is 10 years old ! ! !

 e-Onomastics, this very blog, is TEN years old this month!

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I started blogging!

It was tough to juggle full time work at college but I did it.

Over that time, the vision for this blog has slightly changed but I am still doing more or less the same.

I am still in a bit of shock about that fact, never would I have ever dreamed that my blog could last this long.

It’s been ten amazing years spent in the company of all of you, wonderful and good-hearted onomasticians, who really keep me going.

With almost 1,26 million visits and 3.777 posts, we are one of the oldest and the most visited blog dedicated to onomastics:

I can’t imagine my life without interacting with you guys whose generosity and research has been essential to me. Thanks to all of you delightful name-fans for bringing out a more confident side of me, with your collective kindness and endless array of support in sharing onomastic news.

I’m so happy to have reached this milestone in my blogging "career" and hope to continue for as long as I can)))

Toponyms of Bangladesh: Footprints of History

 link

Reviewed by Sheikh Tawhidul Islam

DARA Shamsuddin in his book titled "Bangladesher Sthan Nam: Itihasher Padachinho" (in English it stands Toponyms of Bangladesh: Footprints of History) told us a story of how Bangla language, along with developments in allied areas such as social, religious, economic and political processes, has evolved in this deltaic regions through historical progression of actions and events. Place names of Bangladesh have been used by the author as proxy to show how fusion of multiple variables of external and internal origins contributed to the evolution of Bangla language and also facilitated the process of emergence of the country as a sovereign nation. In addition to the historical episodes and chronicles presented, the author also illustrated the influence of local physical attributes/processes in labeling a place with a certain name.

The place names (using mauza names) of Bangladesh were thoroughly analyzed in the book for their historical lineage, structural forms and patterns (including phonetics, forms of spelling, evolution and conversion of Bangla words from English, into English and in many cases re-conversion) and literary sources. Application of computer technology helped the author to provide precise indications of occurrences of place names in certain conditions (e.g. sample assessment showed that 46 percent of place names have two syllabi in their construction, see Table 5.13 page 114). A spatial analysis was presented with geographical clustering of different prefixes and suffixes of place names superimposed on physical maps of Bangladesh. These maps give indications that the place names have strong correlation with their being with physical and social phenomena (like distribution of canal, rivers, sediment deposited islands, presence of settlements) of an area. Gradual progress in reading will give the reader a sense that the book is the end-result of a long and painstaking research, where results were seamlessly knitted to form a single piece.

The book demonstrates that primary thrusts of developing the lexis of Bangla, rich stock of words (e.g. Austric language lend us the names of numerous plants and animals; please see Appendix 1) and their evolution through different kingdoms such as Maurya, Kushan-Gupta, Pal, Afghan-Turks-Mughals are important contributions of past events and the products of historical processes. This might open up two avenues of thoughts to the readers; firstly people of this region were open to embracing external elements to which they were exposed to and/or secondly they had limited capacity and strength to hold back the infringements whether it was the imposition of the foreign rulers or diffusion of foreign cultures including language. Whatever way we accept it, the historical analysis showed that the main attributes of Bangla language remained in aspects like plurality, multiplicity, diversity and profusion. Thus liberalism, tolerance and progressiveness become the defining characteristics of Bangla language.

It is important to note that the author demonstrated an extraordinary skill in combining wide ranging elements for which he has to be conversant with at least five disciplines like Bangla language, History, Anthropology, Archaeology and Geography. In addition, control over computer aided applications specially the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), strong field exposure, deep knowledge of development programme of the country and finally strong commitment towards the nation, all in collective fashion, contributed to supplying the materials needed to write this book. Hence the readers of the book would be wide-ranging including students and teachers of academic disciplines, development planners and practitioners, government officials and people who are engaged in curriculum development and training on Bangladesh affairs. The author very effectively showed how history could be used to recognize self identity, map the roots of Bangla language and how local norms and religious practices influence, how production processes and production relations take place and progress made. The annexure would be of direct use as reference where 239 gods and goddess of Hindu communities, 364 (profession based) family names, origins of Bangla words are given. The book is well structured and reader friendly; even the author provided a guideline for different reader groups how to navigate to different sections of the book. The author acknowledged that he could not undertake all necessary research to unearth more facts on the subject matter and provided specific indications where others may pay attention and do further research.
