About the ISPN

The vision of the International Symposium on Place Names series is to advance research on place names and to provide a platform for international collaboration in this regard. As such, in addition to the symposium, a related workshop usually directly precedes the symposium.

History of the ISPN

Prof Peter E Raper, one of South Africa’s foremost experts on the Bushman (San) substructures of place names, was appointed as a Professor Extraordinaire in Linguistics at the UFS in 2011. Subsequently, his host department, together with the now-defunct Unit for Language Facilitation and Empowerment, initiated the Place Names Symposium. The hosting of the symposium is now situated within the newly restructured Department of South African Sign Language and Deaf Studies.
The symposium became an international occurrence when the Joint IGU/ICA Commission on Toponymy came on board in 2015. Hosted every second year, this symposium is the only one in Southern Africa that focuses exclusively on toponomy. The 2011 symposium, entitled 'Planning name changes – the quest for authenticity', was hosted in Bloemfontein, as was the one in 2013 with the theme, 'Place names in a multilingual society'. The symposium in 2015, which focused on 'Place names, diversity and heritage', was held in Clarens. The University of Namibia collaborated to host the 2017 symposium, 'Critical toponymy: place names in political, historical and commercial landscapes', in Windhoek, Namibia. ISPN returned to Clarens in 2019 with the theme 'Recognition, regulation, revitalisation: place names and indigenous languages'. The 2021 symposium was hosted virtually, with the theme 'Standardisation and the wealth of place names - aspects of a delicate relationship'. Up to now, every symposium was followed by an accredited publication.

 Today, there was the last day of the 8th Panhellenic Conference of Onomastics "Onomastics of Peloponnese" held from 28 to 30 July 2023. 

All in all, there were about 40 presentations, online broadcasting, workshop about the bookbinding, and many breath-cathing discussions.

Международный конкурс по ономастике «В мире имён и названий»

С 15 июля по 1 октября 2023 г. Автономная некоммерческая организация «Тамбовское библиотечное общество» в рамках проекта «„Мягкая сила“ русского языка», который реализуется при поддержке Министерства культуры Российской Федерации, с использованием гранта, предоставленного ООГО «Российский фонд культуры» в рамках федерального проекта «Творческие люди» национального проекта «Культура» проводит международный конкурс по ономастике «В мире имён и названий» для учащихся из КНР, Узбекистана, Казахстана, России.

Цель Конкурса — способствовать популяризации ономастических знаний и пробуждению интереса граждан любой страны знать, откуда произошли имена и фамилии знаменитых людей, прославивших Тамбовский край; что означает местность, где человек родился или жил, как слова, лежащие в основе той или иной фамилии или географической местности, соотносятся с русскоязычной культурой как частью мировой культуры.

Председателем оргкомитета Конкурса является Антонина Семеновна Щербак — российский лингвист, краевед, доктор филологических наук, профессор кафедры русского языка Института филологии ТГУ имени Г. Р. Державина.

In Deutschland gibt es etwa 850.000 Familiennamen. Die Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur in Mainz arbeitet an einem digitalen Wörterbuch der Familiennamen Deutschland (DFD). Im Rahmen dieses Projekts dokumentiert Frau Dr. Heuser, welche sprachlichen Muster von Familiennamen es gibt, wie sie tradiert wurden und was viele Namen über Herkunft und soziale Schicht ihrer Träger aussagen.

Kyrgyzstan legalizes matronymic names

The Judicial Board of the Constitutional Court of the Kyrgyz Republic has recognized the need to develop the institution of mating / matronym in Kyrgyzstan.

The Kyrgyz government is currently developing amendments to the legislation on the institution of mating / matronym, giving the right to children over the age of 16 to indicate in documents instead of patronymic names, that is, the name of the mother.

Kyrgyz female activist Altyn Kapalova wrote on her Facebook page on July 2 that Kyrgyzstan’s Constitutional Court had ordered the Government to legalize matronymic names following her long-running battle to allow children to choose to use their mother's name instead of their father's as part of their full legal names in documents.

The legislation would allow children to choose which of their parents' names to use when they reach 16, Ms. Kapalova wrote on her Facebook page. 

“That is any adult can have the mother's name as a middle name.  I would like thank the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan and congratulate my 16-year-old son Daniyar Altynovich Kapalov, who will soon go to get a passport and be able to take my name as a middle name.  I was especially pleased with the Constitutional Court’s wording “matronym / mating institution,” Ms. Kapalova wrote on her Facebook page.  

Kyrgyz media reports say Ms. Kapalova, a single mother of several children, has fought for the change for years.

Call for Book Chapter Proposals: Chosen, Bestowed, Acquired, Assigned: Names and Naming in Youth Literature

Just as names are among the first and most basic means by which we order and make sense of our world, so too do names in works of literature help readers order and make sense of created worlds. Moreover, names in literature often connote more than they denote. This edited collection will consider how names, depictions of naming practices, and explorations of name theory in youth literature can enrich our understanding of created worlds and, by implication, of our real world. For the purposes of this collection, we draw on the Children’s Literature Association’s conception of literature as “books, films, and other media created for, or adopted by, children and young adults around the world, past, present, and future" (https://www.childlitassn.org).

 

Chapters proposed for this volume might address names, naming, and name theory in youth literature of any media and/or modality, from any perspective, and using the analytical tools of any discipline. From the names of places, people, animals, and plants to the monikers of fairies and goblins, cyborgs and droids, any type of name from any time period or from any language is welcome. Please see the American Name Society’s glossary of naming terminology (https://www.americannamesociety.org/names/). The primary works examined may be fiction or non-fiction. The only subject-matter stipulation for submission is that the primary intended reading audience of the piece(s) of literature investigated must be youth (i.e., children, adolescents, and/or early adults).

 

The following is a partial list of possible topics, but we also welcome being surprised by other pertinent suggestions.

 

• • • Names as chosen, bestowed, acquired, assigned, or self-selected

    • Naming practices, rites, rituals, and regulations and their implications

    • Literary devices or linguistic mechanisms used in creating names and their implications

    • Questions of unnaming and renaming of people, places, and things

    • Questions of names and identity, self-hood, and socio-cultural connection

    • Names as constructions of normal vs. abnormal, good vs. evil, acceptable vs. anathema

    • Theoretical frameworks for analyzing names in youth literature and media

    • Challenges and strategies for translating names

    • Names of the non-human, inhuman, mechanical, and systemic and their implications

    • Names in galaxies far, far away and in subatomic systems

    • Names as markers of political, ideological, historical controversies

    • Nonsensical names and/or memetic names and their implications

 

Proposal Submission Process

• Abstract proposals (max. 500 words, excluding the title and references) should be sent as a PDF email attachment to Dr. Anne W. Anderson (YouthLit2023@gmail.com).

• For organizational purposes, the proposals must include “YOUTHLIT2023” in the subject line of the email.

• All proposals must include an abstract, a title, and a preliminary list of references.

• The full name(s) of the author(s) and the author(’s’) affiliation(s) must appear in the body of the email. These details should NOT appear in the attached proposal.

• In the case of multi-authored submissions, one person must be clearly identified as the primary contact.

• The DEADLINE for proposal submissions is July 15, 2023. NOTE: We have extended the deadline to August 1, 2023. All proposals will be submitted to a double-blind review process. Authors will be notified about acceptance on or before September 15, 2023.

• Final chapters (max. 7,000 words, excluding abstracts and references) will be due March 15, 2024.

VIII Xornada de Onomástica

The VIII Xornada de Onomastica will start on October 21, 2023, at the Museum of Pontevedra, and will explore the role of toponyms and antroponyms in popular culture.

The one-day meeting of the Seminario de Onomástica of the Royal Galician Academy (Real Academia Galega, RAG) is organized in collaboration with the Diputación de Pontevedra and the Pontevedra museum. This year's edition will pay special attention to the presence of the people and place names in the popular songs.

In addition, there will be time to learn about experiences from the educational world related to the theme, which will be closed with a musical performance by Tralo-Valo. The sessions will be held in the morning and afternoon. The morning session will continue with a contribution by Antonio Reigosa Carreiras on onomastics in Galician oral tradition tales and a review of the relationship between onomastics and anthropology in Galicia by Elena Freire Paz. The afternoon session will start with a report by Carlos Baliñas Pérez on the social usages of cognomen (nicknames, sobriquets, family names...) in early medieval Galicia and will continue with a contribution from the world of didactics.

The toponyms, antroponyms and the names of saints in the songbooks will be the focus of the first three reports, given by Domingo Blanco, Xosé Miranda Ruíz and Xosé Ramiro Cuba Rodríguez, respectively.

The American Name Society is now inviting proposals for papers for its next annual conference. After considering an official proposal made on May 8, 2023, the ANS Executive Council voted to hold the 2024 Annual Conference online, as a 1-day event; the ANS expects to hold additional 1-day conferences during the remainder of 2024. Thus, the 2024 ANS conference will not be held in conjunction with the LSA meeting, which is still slated to be held in person, 4-7 January 2024 in New York City. 
 
Abstracts in any area of onomastic research are welcome: personal names, place names, business and institutional names, names theory, names in literature, among others.  
 
Proposals require these elements:

• Title of proposed paper
• 250-word abstract
• Shorter 100-word abstract suitable for inclusion in conference program
• 50-word biography suitable for inclusion in conference program

Founder of the Voronezh Onomastic School: 80th Anniversary of Professor Gennady Kovalev

15 июля 2024 г. исполняется 80 лет Геннадию Филипповичу Ковалеву — выдающемуся российскому филологу, слависту, видному специалисту по ономастике славянских языков, доктору филологических наук, профессору, заведующему кафедрой славянской филологии Воронежского государственного университета, руководителю научно-исследовательской лаборатории воронежского лингвокраеведения им. проф. В. И. Собинниковой, основателю Воронежской ономастической школы.

Выставка из цикла «Памятные даты Воронежского края» приурочена к 80-летию Геннадия Филипповича Ковалева, лингвиста, профессора-слависта, преподавателя, заведующего кафедрой славянской филологии Воронежского государственного университета, руководителя Воронежской ономастической школы. Им написано более 220 научных трудов.

В экспозиции представлены работы ученого: «Биографизм ономастики А.А. Платонова», «Ономастическое пространство поэтического творчества Игоря Северянина», «Старославянский язык» и другие. Биографические сведения о Г.Ф. Ковалеве можно почерпнуть из его статьи «Семейная легенда Никитиных-Ковалевых» (2016). В альманахе «Университетская площадь» (2020, № 11) опубликовано интервью с Геннадием Филипповичем, где он делится воспоминаниями о детстве, об учебе в университете, о том, как пришел в профессию. It is now possible to purchase the softcover version of “English – Ukrainian and Ukrainian – English Reference Dictionary of Ukrainian Names” co-authored by Prof. Leonid Chernovatyi (University of Kharikiv) and Dr. Eugen Schochenmaier (ICOS). 

This edition has been published by a new start-up group Mondonomo and specially devoted to the Ukrainian given names, their transliteration and etymology. The work can be considered as one of the first bilingual Reference Dictionary of Ukrainian Names. It chronicles the naming patterns within Ukraine at a time when the country’s people, culture, and language are facing destruction and devastation. The creation of the given edition should be viewed as a move that comes out of solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Thanks to the dictionary, English-speaking researchers have gained direct access to material that was previously not widely available. Dictionary also makes the work performed by Ukrainian researchers more visible in the international environment, contributing to the promotion of Ukrainian studies.

This is a compelling account of Ukraine’s cultural history, told through the prism of a carefully curated selection of key names arguing for a distinctly Ukrainian cultural identity. Organized thematically across nine chapters, the Reference Dictionary contains more than 6.000 given names forms with their corresponding English pairs, while accompanying information reveal the origin and significance behind the names. About 2.000 pet forms reveal their amazing Slavic morphological flexibility. All in all, it includes over 8.000 up-to-date dictionary entries with Ukrainian script, official Romanized form and non-standard spellings.

Василий Супрун об ономастике и архивной диалектологии

В рамках проекта «Десятилетие науки и технологий в России» РИАЦ представляет интервью с доктором филологических наук Василием Ивановичем Супруном, профессором кафедры русского языка и метода его преподавания Волгоградского государственного социально-педагогического университета.
Василий Иванович автор более 500 публикаций в области филологии, педагогики, краеведения и методики преподавания русского языка, лингвист международного уровня. Во многих православных учебных заведениях студенты учатся по его учебнику церковнославянского языка, младшие школьники разных городов России с интересом узнают историю слов родного языка из этимологического словаря, который составил профессор В.И. Супрун.
Василий Иванович разрабатывает новое научное направление – архивная диалектология. Ведь одним из видов сбора материалов является работа в архивах. Тонкий лингвистический анализ в архивах позволяет узнать не только значение слов, но даже и их произношение.
В круг научных интересов Василия Ивановича входит наука об именах собственных – ономастика. Для В.И. Супруна наиболее привлекательными направлениями данной науки являются топонимика и антропонимика.
