Seminar "Voluntarium et naturale'? Slave Onomastics in Ancient Italy"

 On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, the University of St Andrews' School of Classics will host a seminar titled 'Voluntarium et naturale'? Slave Onomastics in Ancient Italy, presented by Katherine McDonald from Durham University. The event is scheduled from 2:15 pm to 3:45 pm in Room SO3, located on the ground floor of the School of Classics.

In this seminar, McDonald will critically examine the naming conventions of enslaved individuals in ancient Italy, drawing upon Latin, Etruscan, and Oscan sources. While it's acknowledged that the prevalence of 'Greek' names among Italian slaves doesn't necessarily reflect their actual origins, assumptions about Greek or Eastern backgrounds often persist. Using Varro's assertion that slaves' names were voluntarium (chosen) rather than naturale (innate) as a foundation, McDonald will explore instances of slave names that deviate from conventional expectations, shedding light on the lived experiences of the enslaved.

 The Sixth International Conference on Onomastics "Name and Naming" (ICONN 6), held in Baia Mare, Romania, from September 5 to 7, 2023, centered on the theme "(In)correctness in Onomastics." L’intérêt général des résultats présentés dans cet article se mesure à l’effet démographique majeur des fondateurs identifiés au Registre de la population du Québec ancien. L’origine en France du pionnier laurentien Pierre Grondin (∼1649-1729) a enfin été élucidée, mais on ne le doit qu’à la participation publique ainsi qu’aux sources hétérogènes que sont les archives civiles et le génome.  📢 The Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in collaboration with the Ukrainian Onomastic Commission and Central Ukrainian State University, invites scholars and researchers to participate in the XXI All-Ukrainian (with international participation) Onomastic Conference.

The event is dedicated to celebrating the 70th anniversary of Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, and Honored Figure of Science and Technology V.V. Luchyk, and will take place on May 22–23, 2025.

This conference provides a unique platform for scholars and researchers specializing in onomastics, linguistics, and philology to exchange ideas, discuss theoretical and methodological challenges, and explore the latest advancements in name studies.

Conference Sections

The conference will feature five main scientific sections:

✔ Section 1: History and methodology of onomastic research. Issues of onomastic terminology.
✔ Section 2: Etymology and dialectal specificity of proper names.
✔ Section 3: Current issues of personal and place name studies.
✔ Section 4: Functional features of proper names in dialectal and urban linguistic landscapes.
✔ Section 5: Literary, folklore, and cognitive onomastics. Name usage in media discourse.

Запрошуємо взяти участь у ХХІ Всеукраїнській (з міжнародною участю) ономастичній конференції, присвяченій 70-річчю від дня народження доктора філологічних наук, професора, заслуженого діяча науки і техніки В. В. Лучика, яка відбудеться 22–23 травня 2025 року.

ЗАПЛАНОВАНО РОБОТУ ТАКИХ СЕКЦІЙ:

СЕКЦІЯ №1. Історія та методологія ономастичних досліджень. Проблемні аспекти ономастичної термінології.  

СЕКЦІЯ №2.  Етимологія та діалектна специфіка власних назв.

СЕКЦІЯ №3.  Актуальні питання слов’янської антропоніміки й топоніміки. 

СЕКЦІЯ №4.  Функціональні особливості власних назв у слов’янському онімному просторі.

СЕКЦІЯ №5.  Літературна, фольклорна й когнітивна ономастика. Пропріативи в медійному дискурсі.

 

Передбачено такий порядок роботи конференції:

22 травня 2025 року з 10.00 до 14.00 – перше пленарне засідання,

з 15.30 до 18.30 – секційні засідання;

23 травня 2025 року з 10.00 до 13.00 – завершальне пленарне засідання,

з 14.00 до 15.00 – засідання Української ономастичної комісії.

Програму буде надіслано наприкінці квітня.

 

Робочі мови конференції – українська та інші слов’янські, англійська.

Формат участі: змішаний (очний / дистанційний – на платформі Zoom).

L’onomastique historique connaît un nouvel essor grâce aux avancées en généalogie ADN et science participative. Cette conférence abordera :
✔️ L’impact démographique de la famille Grondin en Nouvelle-France (1649–1729), à partir du Registre de la population du Québec ancien.
✔️ L’utilisation des marqueurs génétiques (ADN-Y) pour confirmer la transmission des patronymes et retracer les migrations qui restaient inconnues.
✔️ Comment l’étude des noms de famille et la génétique permettent d’identifier des réseaux migratoires inédits ayant façonné la colonie française du Canada.
