When a Proper Name Becomes an Ordinary Word: Diana-Maria Coman Grou’s New Study of Deonomastic Lexicalization in Romanian

What happens when a proper name ceases to identify one unique person or place and begins to designate an entire class of objects, people, behaviours or concepts? At that moment, something particularly interesting happens at the border between onomastics and lexicology. A linguistic form moves from the world of names into the ordinary vocabulary of a language. The proper name loses, partly or completely, its original identifying function and acquires a lexical meaning of its own.

This transition is the subject of a new Romanian monograph by Diana-Maria Coman Grou, Lexicalizarea numelor proprii în limba română (The Lexicalization of Proper Names in the Romanian Language), published by Pro Universitaria in 2026. The publisher dates the volume to 6 July 2026 and describes it as a systematic study of the transfer of proper names into the class of common nouns and of the replacement of an onomastic function by a lexical one. The publisher gives 217 pages, while Libris lists 218.

The apparently specialized subject is in fact remarkably broad. The vocabulary of almost every European language contains words whose biographies began as proper names. Sometimes the original name remains easily recognizable; sometimes centuries of borrowing and semantic change have almost completely concealed it. What interests Coman Grou is not simply the collection of curious etymologies, however, but the linguistic mechanism by which names become words. That distinction makes this volume particularly relevant to onomasticians.

From a doctoral project to a monograph

The book grows out of a substantial doctoral research project bearing the same title. Diana-Maria Coman (Grou) defended the dissertation at Ovidius University of Constanța on 27 September 2024, within the Doctoral School of Humanities, under the supervision of Prof. Emiliea-Domnița Tomescu, one of the major specialists in Romanian onomastics. The Romanian and English summaries of the dissertation remain publicly accessible through the university. This background is valuable because the doctoral summary makes the architecture and objectives of the research much more visible than a short commercial description can. The central problem is formulated as a movement: proper name → common lexical item. But behind that arrow lie several separate questions. What semantic change makes the transfer possible? Does the new word enter Romanian directly from a Romanian proper name, or was the lexicalization already completed in another language before Romanian borrowed the resulting word? Does the new common noun retain the spelling of the original proper name? What happens to grammatical gender and number? And at what point can we say that the old onomastic function has truly disappeared?

The thesis summary explicitly identifies the study of the degree of lexicalization—whether the original onomastic function is retained or lost—as one of the research’s elements of originality. Fully lexicalized forms, in Coman Grou’s analysis, leave the proper-name class and become stable vocabulary items, usually accompanied by semantic and grammatical changes.

Two linguistic worlds that constantly exchange material

The first major part of the study establishes the theoretical relationship between lexicon and onomastics. This relationship is not one-way. Ordinary words can become names: a common noun, adjective or other lexical item may acquire the function of identifying an individual person or place. Conversely, a proper name may return to the lexicon as a common word.

Coman Grou had already explored this reciprocal relationship in an earlier article, Relația dintre lexicologie și onomastică (“The Relationship between Lexicology and Onomastics”). There she argued that the two domains are interdependent: lexical material constantly migrates toward onomastics, while proper names can in turn generate new simple, derived or compound lexical units.

The book develops this idea by contrasting lexicalization with the reverse phenomenon of onomasticization. The public table of contents of the doctoral study places this distinction at the beginning of the theoretical chapter, followed immediately by detailed discussions of antonomasia and eponymy. This is more important than it may initially appear, because the terms are often used rather loosely.

Antonomasia, eponymy and lexicalization: not quite the same thing

One of the strongest theoretical components of the research is the attempt to distinguish three closely connected phenomena: antonomasia, eponymy and lexicalization. Antonomasia is traditionally discussed as a rhetorical device. A famous individual can become the model for a type of person, so that their name is temporarily used to characterize somebody else. But a rhetorical innovation does not automatically become a permanent word of the language.

That transition requires conventionalization. In other words, there is an important difference between using a proper name metaphorically on one particular occasion and using a deonomastic form that speakers recognize as an established lexical item.

Coman Grou has devoted a separate study to “Eponymy and Antonomasia – Similarities and Differences.” Her aim there is precisely to determine where the two mechanisms function stylistically and where they have genuinely entered the lexical system. The study emphasizes that both phenomena originate in proper names, but their functions and degrees of stabilization need to be distinguished.

The distinction becomes one of the conceptual strengths of the new monograph. Not every figurative use of a name is a new word. Lexicalization is a process, and different forms may stand at different points along it.

Where Romanian deonomastics came from

The second major section moves from theory into etymology. Here the book constructs an inventory of Romanian lexical units originating in proper names and makes a crucial distinction between two categories: deonomastic lexical borrowings and Romanian deonomastic lexical creations. The publisher explicitly identifies this separation according to source language as one of the book’s principal tasks.

The difference is fundamental. A Romanian word may ultimately derive from a proper name without the name-to-word transformation having taken place in Romanian itself. The lexicalized product may first have developed in French, Italian, German or another language and only later have been borrowed into Romanian. This is why the study begins the section on external sources with French deonomastic borrowings. The full dissertation table of contents records that subsection explicitly.

The approach therefore avoids a common etymological simplification. Saying that a Romanian common noun “comes from a proper name” does not yet tell us where lexicalization actually happened. One has to reconstruct the chain: proper name → deonomastic word in language A → borrowing into Romanian or, alternatively: Romanian proper name → Romanian lexical creation. This distinction allows deonomastics to become part of the larger history of language contact and vocabulary enrichment.

Biblical people, saints and places hidden inside ordinary vocabulary

Some of the most accessible examples of Coman Grou’s method can be found in her related research on religious deonyms in Romanian. Her study identifies words whose histories ultimately lead back to Biblical or Christian proper names. Examples discussed there include Romanian adamic, traced through French adamique to Adam; benedictin, ultimately associated with Benedict of Nursia; and lazaret, connected through its European history with the Biblical Lazarus. She also examines deonyms connected with sacred place names, including forms associated with Calvary/Golgotha.

These examples illustrate beautifully why deonomastics can be difficult. For an ordinary speaker, such a word may function simply as vocabulary. Its proper-name origin may no longer be consciously perceived at all. The name has, in effect, become linguistically invisible inside the word. And that is precisely what full lexicalization can accomplish: a form that once pointed toward one unique referent eventually acquires a generalized lexical meaning.

The semantic life of lexicalized names

The third major part of the book is devoted to semantics, and here the investigation becomes especially ambitious. According to the doctoral table of contents, the author first examines the semantic properties of common nouns and proper names, including the long-standing problem of whether - and in what sense—proper names possess “meaning.” She then turns to the semantic transformations that occur when proper names enter the lexical class.

This is a central theoretical problem in onomastics. A proper name primarily identifies: Maria, Bucharest, Danube, Napoleon. A common noun, by contrast, normally categorizes. It tells us that something belongs to a class. Lexicalization therefore involves a profound functional change: individualization → categorization. A unique referent provides the basis for a generalized concept.

Coman Grou does not stop at individual etymologies. She organizes deonomastic common nouns into lexico-semantic fields, thus asking which areas of reality are especially productive in the transformation of names into vocabulary. The doctoral research identifies the establishment and inventorying of these fields as another original contribution.

Her 2023 article on the semantic aspects of lexicalization already anticipated this approach. It classifies deonomastic words by semantic field, vocabulary range and number of meanings, and distinguishes simple forms, derivatives formed with prefixes or suffixes, and the comparatively rarer compounds. This transforms the study from a collection of individual lexical curiosities into a systematic description of a subsystem of Romanian vocabulary.

Anthroponyms and toponyms do not behave identically

Another important feature is the distinction between different onomastic source series. The semantic chapter separately discusses an anthroponymic series and a toponymic series of lexicalized names. This matters because a personal name and a place name typically motivate new words in different ways.

Anthroponyms may lexicalize because a person becomes emblematic of a behaviour, invention, doctrine, object or social type. Toponyms, by contrast, can become common words through association with products, materials, events, cultural practices or phenomena linked to a particular place.

Once lexicalized, however, speakers may no longer recognize whether the word began with a person, a city, a region, a Biblical locality or a mythological figure. The book consequently restores the onomastic biography hidden behind ordinary lexical forms.

What grammar tells us about whether a name has really become a word

The fourth major component examines something that popular discussions of eponyms almost always overlook: grammar. When a proper name becomes a Romanian common noun, it must begin behaving like a Romanian lexical item. That can involve changes in spelling and pronunciation, but also much more fundamental grammatical adaptation. The dissertation investigates structural types - simple,  derived and compound forms - as well as gender, number and determination. Its table of contents even distinguishes deonomastic creations whose grammatical gender remains the same as that of the source name from those whose gender changes during lexicalization.

This provides a particularly useful diagnostic of lexical integration. Capitalization may disappear. Plural forms become possible. Articles and other determiners can be attached. A lexicalized item acquires the morphology expected of an ordinary Romanian noun. In other words, grammar can reveal something that etymology alone cannot: how far the form has travelled away from its original status as a proper name.

A continuum rather than an instant transformation

One of the more interesting implications of the book is that lexicalization should not always be imagined as an instantaneous switch. There can be intermediate stages. A famous proper name may initially appear as an expressive comparison. Repeated usage can make the comparison familiar. The association becomes conventional. The form can then acquire a generalized meaning, lose capitalization, develop derivatives or plural forms and finally enter dictionaries as an independent lexical item.

This suggests a continuum: proper name → contextual antonomasia → recurrent figurative use → conventionalized deonym → fully lexicalized common word. Coman Grou’s concern with the degree of lexicalization is therefore particularly valuable. It connects literary and rhetorical usage with lexicography, semantics and morphology rather than treating them as unrelated phenomena.

An extensive index as an onomastic resource

The study does not end with theoretical conclusions. The doctoral version contains an extensive Index of Proper Names That Have Become Common Names, beginning on page 207 of the thesis. For onomasticians, lexicologists and lexicographers, such an index is potentially one of the volume’s most practically useful elements. It turns the analytical research into a reference resource.

This is important because Romanian scholarship certainly had earlier studies of proper names becoming appellatives and dictionaries of eponyms, but the phenomenon had often been approached from individual lexical groups, particular terminologies or narrower questions. Coman Grou explicitly aims at an integrated account combining etymology, semantics and grammar. The publisher likewise presents the volume as an overview of lexicalization as a complex and dynamic process examined from these three perspectives.

A research programme developed over several years

The monograph also brings together a line of research that can be followed through the author’s preceding publications. In 2021, while affiliated with Ovidius University, Coman Grou was already presenting research on the relationship between lexicology and onomastics. Her later work examined the semantic organization of lexicalized proper names, the distinction between eponymy and antonomasia, and specialized groups such as religious deonyms. The 2026 book can therefore be read not as an isolated publication but as the consolidation of a research programme developed across several years and ultimately formalized in the doctoral dissertation.

nume propriu → nume comun

Dar procesul ridică imediat numeroase întrebări. Unde are loc schimbarea semantică?

Putem imagina astfel traseul:

New Book: "Gender in Japanese Names Today" by Ivona Barešová and Francis Bond

A new book of major relevance to contemporary onomastics has appeared: Ivona Barešová and Francis Bond’s Gender in Japanese Names Today, published by Palacký University Olomouc in 2026. The volume is available as an online iPDF and carries the DOI 10.5507/ff.26.24465500. It was supported by the Czech Science Foundation and reviewed by James Breen and Giancarla Unser-Schutz.

The book examines how gender is expressed in Japanese given names today, with particular attention to the rise and character of gender-neutral names. It is not merely a list of names, but a broad linguistic and sociocultural study of how Japanese naming practices have changed across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The authors combine several kinds of evidence: baby-name rankings, historical naming patterns, online name-selection narratives, and large-scale datasets, including data from Baby Calendar, Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company, and the Heisei Namae Jiten.

A central strength of the book is its careful distinction between the phonological form of a Japanese name - how it is read or pronounced - and its graphic form - how it is written. This distinction is essential in Japanese because the same written name may have several possible readings, and the same pronunciation may be written with different kanji, hiragana, or katakana. The authors explicitly state that they refer to pronunciation as the phonological form and written representation as the graphic form.

The study shows that Japanese names have become increasingly diverse. Contemporary parents often seek names that sound original, beautiful, meaningful, or globally suitable. This has weakened older, more rigid naming patterns. For much of the twentieth century, many women’s names were strongly marked by the suffix -ko 子, while many men’s names followed recognizable masculine patterns. Today, however, gender is expressed in more varied and often subtler ways.

One of the book’s most interesting findings is that gender-neutral names in Japan are not always chosen explicitly as ideological statements about gender. In many cases, gender neutrality emerges indirectly: parents may choose a name because of its sound, kanji meaning, originality, aesthetic appeal, or personal symbolism, and the name happens to be usable for both boys and girls. The authors argue that gender-neutral names therefore reflect not only changing attitudes toward gender, but also broader transformations in Japanese naming culture.

The book also shows an asymmetry in the development of gender-neutral names. Rather than boys’ and girls’ names moving equally toward a shared middle ground, the evidence suggests that more boys’ names are acquiring features formerly associated with girls’ names than the reverse. In other words, the softening of masculine naming patterns appears especially important in contemporary Japan.

Another important contribution is the book’s treatment of Japanese names as multilayered signs. A name may sound relatively gender-neutral but become more feminine or masculine through its kanji. The authors give the example of Mizuki, which can be gender-neutral in pronunciation but acquire a more feminine impression when written with a kanji meaning “princess.” This layered relationship between sound, script, and meaning is one of the specifically Japanese features of gender expression in names.

The book’s comparative chapter places Japan in a wider international context. It notes that rising name diversity and increased interest in gender-neutral names are not unique to Japan, but are also visible in countries such as the United States, the Netherlands, England and Wales, and Canada. At the same time, Japan remains distinctive because kanji allow gender to be encoded visually and semantically in ways that are not easily comparable to alphabetic naming systems.

Overall, Gender in Japanese Names Today is an important contribution to the study of names, gender, and social change. It will be useful not only for specialists in Japanese linguistics, but also for scholars of onomastics, sociolinguistics, gender studies, writing systems, and digital humanities. Its greatest value lies in showing that names do not simply reflect society: they participate in the subtle, everyday reshaping of social categories.

新刊紹介:Ivona Barešová・Francis Bond 著『Gender in Japanese Names Today』

日本の名前研究、ジェンダー研究、そして現代社会における命名文化に関心をもつ読者にとって、注目すべき新刊が刊行されました。Ivona Barešová と Francis Bond による Gender in Japanese Names Today です。

Studies in Catalan and Occitan Toponymy: New Reference Work Published

Essential Volume on Place-Name Research in Catalan-Occitan Area

English Version

A Fundamental New Volume for the Study of Catalan and Occitan Place Names

On January 31, 2026, "Estudis de toponímia catalana i occitana" (Studies in Catalan and Occitan Toponymy) was published, edited by Mar Batlle and Emili Casanova by Editorial Tirant Lo Blanch. This 430-page volume represents a fundamental contribution to Catalan and Occitan toponymy, bringing together thirteen studies that provide new etymological and methodological knowledge from various disciplinary perspectives.

A Book That Approaches Toponymy from Multiple Angles

This volume collects a set of studies, most of which contribute, from various perspectives, more etymological knowledge of Catalan toponymy and, more tangentially, of anthroponymy. The work stands out for its diversity of approaches: from dialectology to lexical history, from geography to archival documentation, from etymology to landscape reading.

Given that Occitan is a language closely related to Catalan, the volume includes:

✓ A study on the state of toponymic studies in the Occitan linguistic area
✓ Another that exemplifies the trace that numerous Occitan immigrations have left on surnames in the Catalan linguistic domain

Overall, the volume is a valuable theoretical and practical, informative and scholarly contribution to Catalan and Occitan toponymy, their intense relationship, and etymological studies in general.

The Thirteen Chapters: A Complete Journey

The book offers thirteen chapters covering theoretical and methodological aspects as well as specific case studies:

Chapter 1: Toponymy and Dialectology

Pere Navarro Gómez

Navarro explores the fundamental relationship between toponymy and dialectology, showing how place names preserve dialectal features and can serve as witnesses to regional linguistic evolution.

Chapter 2: Toponymy and Lexical History: The Place Name atans and the Verb atansar

Josep Martines

A case study demonstrating how toponymy can illuminate lexical history. Martines analyzes the toponym atans and its relationship with the verb atansar, offering a diachronic perspective on lexical evolution.

Chapter 3: A Problem of Toponymic Conceptualization: Differentiating Between Toponym and Anthroponym. The Geographic Perspective

Joan Tort i Donada

Tort addresses a key theoretical problem: how to distinguish between toponyms and anthroponyms when boundaries become blurred. From a geographic perspective, he examines differentiation criteria and conceptual gray zones.

Chapter 4: Transfers Between Toponymy and Anthroponymy: Toponymic Surnames

Albert Turull

Turull investigates the phenomenon of surnames derived from toponyms, documenting how place names become family names and what this process reveals about geographic mobility and identity.

Chapter 5: Etymology: From Certainty to Conjecture

Joan Anton Rabella

Rabella reflects on the methodological limits of toponymic etymology: when can we be certain of an etymology and when do we enter the realm of conjecture? An essential chapter on scientific rigor.

Chapter 6: Curiosities of Toponymic Research

Fèlix Bruguera Ligero

Bruguera shares curious and surprising cases found during toponymic research, offering a more accessible and informative chapter that illustrates the richness and diversity of Catalan place names.

Chapter 7: Reading the Landscape: Toponymic Examples in Gascony and Languedoc

Bénédicte Boyrie-Fénié

Boyrie-Fénié's French-language chapter brings the Occitan perspective directly into the volume. She analyzes how to "read the landscape" through Gascon and Languedocian toponymy, showing parallels with Catalan territories.

Chapter 8: The Toponymy of Safor in the 16th and 17th Centuries Through Criminal Proceedings Records

Joan Barberà

A fascinating example of archival research: Barberà extracts historical toponymy from judicial documents from the 16th and 17th centuries in Safor, demonstrating how unexpected sources can preserve place names.

Chapter 9: Occitan Presence in the Repopulation of Alicante (1296-1336)

Vicent Terol i Reig

Terol documents the Occitan presence in the medieval repopulation of Alicante, showing how Occitan immigration left its mark on Valencian toponymy and anthroponymy during the period 1296-1336.

Chapter 10: Viladrau: A Toponym Composed of vila and a Germanic Anthroponym?

Xavier Planas-Batlle and Joan Tort-Donada

Planas-Batlle and Tort analyze the etymology of the toponym Viladrau, proposing a possible composition of vila + Germanic anthroponym, with implications for settlement history.

Chapter 11: Notes on the Toponyms Boldú and Besalú

Víctor Sabaté Vidal and Mar Batlle

Sabaté and Batlle offer critical notes on two significant Catalan toponyms: Boldú and Besalú, reviewing previous etymological proposals and contributing new hypotheses.

Chapter 12: Two Basque Toponyms from Ribagorça: Bisaürri and Ovís

Xavier Arbués

Arbués investigates the surprising presence of toponyms of Basque origin in Catalan Ribagorça (Bisaürri and Ovís), witnesses to a pre-Roman presence or poorly documented migrations.

Chapter 13: Coincident Toponymy in Areas Near Espluga Calba

Rosa M. Anglès

Anglès analyzes the phenomenon of coincident toponymy in neighboring areas of Espluga Calba, exploring why certain toponyms repeat in geographically close areas.

Capítol 1: Toponímia i dialectologia

Pere Navarro Gómez

Navarro explora la relació fonamental entre toponímia i dialectologia, mostrant com els noms de lloc preserven trets dialectals i poden servir com a testimonis de l'evolució lingüística regional.

Capítol 2: Toponímia i història del lèxic: el nom de lloc atans i el verb atansar

Josep Martines

Un estudi de cas que demostra com la toponímia pot il·luminar la història del lèxic. Martines analitza el topònim atans i la seva relació amb el verb atansar, oferint una perspectiva diacrònica sobre l'evolució lèxica.

Capítol 3: Un problema de conceptualització toponímica: la diferenciació entre topònim i antropònim. El punt de vista de la geografia

Joan Tort i Donada

Vicent Terol i Reig

Terol documenta la presència occitana en la repoblació medieval d'Alacant, mostrant com la immigració occitana va deixar empremta en la toponímia i antroponímia valencianes durant el període 1296-1336.

Capítol 10: Viladrau: un topònim compost de vila i un antropònim d'origen germànic?

Xavier Planas-Batlle i Joan Tort-Donada

Planas-Batlle i Tort analitzen l'etimologia del topònim Viladrau, proposant una possible composició de vila + antropònim germànic, amb implicacions per a la història del poblament.

Capítol 11: Notes sobre els topònims Boldú i Besalú

Víctor Sabaté Vidal i Mar Batlle

Sabaté i Batlle ofereixen notes crítiques sobre dos topònims catalans significatius: Boldú i Besalú, revisant propostes etimològiques anteriors i aportant noves hipòtesis.

Toponyms on the Western Hardangervidda

 English

Where Mountains Speak: A Lost Thesis Resurfaces to Map Norway's Soul
In 1970, a young student named Botolv Helleland walked the windswept plateaus of Western Hardangervidda, notebook in hand, listening. Not to birds or streams - but to names. Blåkampen. Svartefjell. Lauvbrekka. Each syllable a story. Each name a map of human encounter with raw, ancient stone.
Fifty-six years later, that master's thesis has become Stadnamn på Vestre Hardangervidda - a meticulously revised edition documenting approximately 2,500 place names from one of Norway's most majestic highland landscapes. This isn't just a catalog. It's a linguistic archaeology of how generations of farmers, shepherds, and travelers transformed indifferent geology into intimate geography - naming a rock because it resembled a sleeping bear, a slope because snow lingered there longest, a ridge because it offered the first glimpse of home.
Helleland - now Norway's most revered place-name scholar - collaborated with Erlend Trones to breathe new life into this foundational work. Richly illustrated with photographs that pair landscape with lexicon, the book reveals how language doesn't merely label terrain - it inhabits it. These names are cultural DNA: preserving ecological knowledge, seasonal rhythms, and the quiet poetry of people who knew every contour of their world.
Published in Nynorsk by Hardanger Folkeminnelag, this volume arrives as Norway rediscovers the urgency of place-name preservation. As glaciers retreat and traditional land use fades, these names become our last witnesses - testaments to a worldview where landscape was not scenery, but kin.
For linguists, historians, hikers, or anyone who has ever paused on a mountain path and wondered what did they call this place? - this book offers more than answers. It offers belonging.

- gjev denne boka meir enn svar. Ho gjev heim.
