A rare job opening shows just how practical and strategically important the study of geographical names can be.

International Underwater Explorations (IUE), a subsidiary of Dynamic Integrated Services, is recruiting a Toponymist (Geospatial Linguist) position in St. Louis, Missouri, with a salary range of $80,000–$100,000 per year. The position is full-time and based on site at National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency NGA-STL. The role combines toponymy, linguistics, GIS and geospatial intelligence. The successful candidate will work with historical and modern maps, commercial imagery and geospatial databases, scanning and georeferencing cartographic material and integrating it with the Geographic Names Database (GNDB).

A major part of the job is also institutional and policy-oriented. The analyst is expected to apply naming standards and guidelines associated with organizations such as the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, the U.S. Department of State and NATO.

The language preference for this position is French, with at least ILR Level 2 reading proficiency required. Applicants are also expected to have strong experience with ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, geodatabases, shapefiles, historical maps and geographic-names collection methodologies. Advanced Python scripting is listed as a preferred qualification.

What makes this vacancy especially interesting for onomasticians is that it demonstrates that toponymy is not only an academic discipline. Geographic names are operational data. They are used in mapping, intelligence, international policy, databases and navigation systems, and their correct identification, standardization and interpretation can have real-world consequences.

The position also underlines the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of modern toponymy: a professional toponymist may need to be simultaneously a linguist, historian, cartographer, GIS specialist and regional analyst.

One important restriction is that candidates must already hold an active TS/SCI security clearance and be willing to obtain a polygraph clearance.

For specialists in geographical names, this is a striking example of how onomastic expertise can translate into a highly specialized professional career.
