🇬🇧 Names in Ancient Myth and Religion: International Conference at the University of Zürich
26–28 May 2027 | University of Zürich, Switzerland
How did names shape ancient mythological narratives? What can the names of gods, heroes and places reveal about religious beliefs, cultural contacts and the transmission of myths across different civilizations?
These questions will be explored at the international conference “Names in Ancient Myth and Religion”, taking place at the University of Zürich from 26 to 28 May 2027.
Organised by Florian Sommer (University of Zürich) and Athanassios Vergados (Newcastle University), the conference will bring together scholars interested in the role of proper names in ancient mythology, religion and related literary traditions.
The meeting adopts a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective, examining how names function within mythological narratives and how their meanings, forms and interpretations develop across historical periods and cultural boundaries.
Topics include the relationship between names and narrative structure, the interpretation of divine and heroic names, renaming and the acquisition of additional names, and the influence of literary genres on naming practices. Particular attention will also be given to ancient and medieval scholarship, names in lists and catalogues, the adaptation of names between mythological traditions, name magic, and the significance of names as omina—signs or omens.
For historical onomastics and philology, the conference offers an opportunity to investigate the semantic, linguistic and cultural dimensions of mythological names. The comparison of ancient and modern approaches to name interpretation promises to be particularly relevant to scholars working on etymology, religious language and the history of naming traditions.
Confirmed keynote speakers:
Velizar Sadovski - Austrian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Iranian Studies
Nicla de Zorzi - University of Vienna, Department of Near Eastern Studies
Call for Papers
Researchers wishing to participate are invited to submit a working title and an abstract of approximately 300 words by 15 November 2026.

🇩🇪 Namen in Mythologie und Religion der Antike: Internationale Tagung an der Universität Zürich
