Mapping the toponymy of Great Britain - density of common place name forms and their origins 🗺️

Toponymy is the study of place names, and the place names of Great Britain - as well as being often hilarious - are actually so interesting. Following hundreds of years of invasions and settlements, Britain's place names have really diverse origins and influences including brythonic dating back to the 6 BC, Latin from the roman era, saxon old English, Old norse and French.

Regional celtic languages such as Welsh, pictish, Scottish gaelic and cornish also have a huge influence on certain areas.

These maps show the density of place names with certain common forms, and the origins of these.
