IN MEMORY OF HARALAMBOS P. SYMEONIDIS

The Board of Directors of the Greek Onomastic Society unanimously decided to publish a commemorative volume of «ΟΝΟΜΑΤA» journal in honor of the spiritual memory of the recently deceased Haralambos P. Symeonidis, this great Linguist, Dialectologist, and Onomastician who undoubtedly marked linguistic studies in Greece with his rich and multifaceted work. 

The theme of the volume will be "Onomastics of the Northern Regional type of Greek pronunciation". 

The Greek Onomastic Society invites its members and any other researcher interested to submit for approval, by September 30, 2024, an original scientific article of onomastic content, referring to areas of Greece where Northern phonetics prevail, in order to be published in the aforementioned commemorative volume. The article, accompanied by the contact details of the authors (full name, affiliation, contact phone, and email address), must be sent to the members of the Editorial Committee.

8th Panhellenic Onomastic Congress "Onomastics of the Peloponnese"

The Hellenic Onomastic Society is pleased to announce the decision of the Board of Directors to organize the 8th Panhellenic Congress, which will be held in Andritsaina (Peloponnese, Greece) with the organizational assistance and sponsorship of Administration of Western Greece Region, Public Historical Library of Andritsaina, Swiss Association of Friends of the Public Historical Library of Andritsaina, Olympia Province's Federation of Cultural Associations,Youth Association of Andritsaina "Parrasioi" and G. & F. Kanellopoulos Heirs Foundation .

The theme of the Congress is "Onomastics of the Peloponnese", which concern the names of the wider Peloponnesian Area (forenames, surnames, eponyms, toponyms, etc.), without excluding papers focused on broader theoretical onomastic points.

The overall objective of the congress is to promote the science of Onomastics in Greece and multiple possibilities for broader cooperation and interaction with such sciences as Ethnolinguistics, Classical Philology, Folklore, History, Archaeology, Literature, Linguistics, Geography, etc. The main aim of the congress is to collect, classify, analyse, study and present Peloponnesian names, which have not received the attention of researchers so far.

The Congress will be held at the Public Historical Library of Andritsaina from 28 to 30th  July 2023.

Researchers interested in participating at the congress are invited to submit electronically by 31 January 2023, through sending title and abstract (up to 200 words) of their paper, as well as their full name, title, contact telephone number and e-mail address, to the members of the organising committee:

The duration of each presentation will be 20 minutes and additional 15 minutes will be allowed for discussion at the end of each session. The official languages are Greek and English. 

The Proceedings of the Congress will be published in the 25th volume of the journal Ονόματα.

Call for papers: Tribute Volume in memory of Nikolaos Kontosopulos (1929-2020)

Board of Directors of the Greek Society of Onomastics express their profound grief and sorrow on the recent death of Nikolaos Kontosopulos (1929-2020). 

Prof. Nikolaos G. Kontosopulos is prominent researcher of modern Greek dialects who was a honorary member of the Greek Society of Onomastics and even elected twice as Vice-President of it.  Therefore, the Board unanimously decided to issue one honorary volume in the memory of their Colleague and Friend. 

In this regard, you are warmly invited to submit your original onomastic paper (with contact details: name, title, telephone and e-mail address) by July 30, 2021, which will be published in the aforementioned honorary volume. Please, send your papers to the members of the Editorial Board: xtzavaras@yahoo.gr (Ξενοφών Τζαβάρας) and vrachion@hotmail.com (Μαρία Βραχιονίδου). 

Then, by September 30, 2021, the authors will be informed by the Editorial Board if their articles have been accepted. The latter will be published in the Society's journal "Oνόματα".

7th Panhellenic Conference of Onomastics postponed to 2021

Due to the expected new epidemic wave in autumn 2020, the Greek Onomastic Society decided to postpone for about six months the 7th Panhellenic Conference of Onomastics. Therefore, those who still wish to participate are kindly requested to submit their abstracts by December 31, 2020.

We remind you that the topic of the Conference is: "Onomastics of  Naxos and Lesser Cyclades Islands" that will concern the study of various names (baptismal, surnames, nicknames, toponyms, etc.) inside the archipelago of the Cyclades, wich comprises 32 islands (Naxos, Ano Koufonisi, Kato Koufonisi, Irakleia, Schoinoussa, Donousa, Keros etc.)

The Conference will be dedicated to the former president of the Greek Onomastic Society, Prof. Ioannis Probonas, eminent scholar of the Naxian language and culture. The general objective is to highlight the Hellenic onomastics and provide multiple possibilities for wider cooperation within Ethnolinguistics, Classical Philology, Folklore, History, Archeology, Literature, etc. The Conference will be held in the Church Agios Nikodimos in the city of Naxos from 14th to 16th May 2021.

Registration for the conference will be free, while the accommodation and travel expenses will be covered, with the kind sponsorship of the Municipality of Naxos for 40 speakers. In case the number of participants exceeds, order of priority will be respected based on the date of registration.
