Hello everybody. I am Antonio Sciarretta. This site will contain my researches in the field of toponymy and topography. The site has three main sections:- Toponymy of the Abruzzese Apennine. In this section I will describe thousands of place-names in dialectal form, directly recorded from the local inhabitants of dozens of Abruzzese mountain villages that I have personally visited. Some results have been already published (Maiella, Pettorano, Gran Sasso), but the hardcore is still unpublished.
- Ancient Toponymy. This section will contain a database with thousands of place names from the classical Greek and Roman sources, with comments on their etymology.
- Dialectology of Central-Southern Italy. With a focus on the Abruzzi and its neighboring regions.
- Historical Atlas of the Abruzzi. How the administrative units have evolved since the Roman era.
- Historical Atlas of Italy and the Classical World. Ancient toography at a larger scale.
This second section will be published in English.
