The Oxford Medieval Graduate Conference 2023: ‘Names and Naming’

The conference will be held in person (with limited measures for online papers) at Ertegun House, Oxford, on the 20th and 21st of April, 2023. 

This call for papers relating to all aspects of the broad topic of ‘names and naming’ in the medieval world. They are welcoming papers in any discipline, be it literary; historical; archaeological; linguistic; interdisciplinary; or anything else. There are no limitations on geographical region or time period, as long as the topic falls within the medieval period.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES 

Papers should be a maximum of 20 minutes. The organisers intend to provide bursaries to help with travel costs, and they are welcoming applications from graduate students at any university. Please email abstracts of 250 words to oxgradconf@gmail.com by 15th January, 2023.

Multicultural Patronymic Landscapes of Naming in Russia, France, Germany, Great Britain and Romania

A couple of days ago, I got the book "Names and Naming / Multicultural Aspects" where the 9th Chapter has been written by your obedient servant ! Any comments are more than welcome! 

This chapter represents a contrastive study of the common Russian, French, German, British and Romanian patronyme-based surnames. The aim of the study is to elaborate and evaluate name-based materials for five countries in the form of statistical data, then to analyse and confront motive-related surname clusters and their percentages in order to determine naming patterns and name-giving properties. From this perspective, Romania is of greatest interest as this country is situated at the crossroads between East and West. The typological analysis of Romanian surnames may help resolve numerous questions.

Multiculturalism is a more and more prominent topic in contemporary international public space, whether one considers it in relation to politics, religion, ethnicity or culture. In what onomastics is concerned, multiculturalism appears in all its subfields. In toponymy, for instance, in multi-ethnic areas there are names with etymologies from different languages; when analysed in diachrony, these names testify to the history and geography of the places in question. In anthroponymy, the multicultural element is associated with religion, ethnic belonging and the onomastic fashion of a certain age. In ergonymy, multiculturalism mirrors the configuration of the present-day world, in which globalisation determines the existence of an increasingly diverse landscape, as regards names of companies, brands and products.
