The Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at the Center for Jewish History invites audiences to a fascinating online lecture, “When Jokele Berkowicz Became Jakob Funkelstein: Reassessing the Adoption of Jewish Family Names in Galicia,” to be held live on Zoom.

Focusing on the 1780s, when thousands of Jews in Habsburg Galicia adopted new hereditary family names, this presentation offers a fresh historical reassessment of a subject long shaped by anecdote and stereotype. Drawing on newly discovered archival materials and the analysis of thousands of surnames, the lecture will revisit the political circumstances of surname adoption and examine the actual processes through which these names were created.

The talk promises to shed light on the many sources of Galician Jewish surnames - from imaginative coinages and occupational designations to references to personal traits and literary influences. It will also offer valuable guidance for genealogists and family historians working with Galician records such as metrical books, census lists, and gravestones, showing how a better understanding of naming practices can help reconstruct biographies even from the period before hereditary surnames were fully established.

The speaker, Johannes Czakai, PhD, is a historian and postdoctoral fellow at the Martin Buber Society of Fellows at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on early modern Jewish history, names, genealogy, conversions, and espionage. He is also the author of the award-winning 2021 monograph Nochems neue Namen, an important contribution to the study of Jewish naming practices in Galicia and Bukovina.

This promises to be an engaging and highly relevant event for scholars of onomastics, Jewish history, genealogy, and Central and Eastern European history alike.

The September webinar from the Guild of One-Name Studies is with Howard Benbrook, our President, here is what Howard said:

Whereas many surnames like Shepherd and Baker have origins in the occupation of their original bearer, there are many others whose origin is, sometimes surprisingly, in a very specific place.  

Whilst knowing the geographic origin of a surname will not, in itself, help determine a family history, the historical location of a surname can be enormously helpful in focusing research.” 

The webinar features England and Wales only, but will hopefully inspire researchers to explore surnames from other parts of the world using some of the strategies and techniques gleaned from this webinar.

About the speaker:

Howard served as the bookstall manager for many years, and was a familiar face at many genealogical events where he represented the Guild.  Howard had previously served as Guild Chairman, before becoming a Vice President in 2011, a position he held until July 2022 when he was appointed by the Trustees as President of the Guild of One-Name Studies.

Howard family was resident in the East End of London, where they’d been living since approximately 1750. In order to tackle a Benbrook brick wall, the Benbrook One-Name Study was born and you can read about it HERE.

Another “face of God". The representation of the God-Altar in the Near-Eastern Roman Era between Onomastics and Archaeology

This presentation aims to analyze an exemplary case of the cultural reworking and syncretism in the Ancient Near East. The focus will be the altar, the Bomos/mdbk', which means both the ritual act itself and the divine power to which it is dedicated, almost in the form of a synecdoche. The transversal presence in the oriental cultures of this cultural element (Greek, Aramaic, Nabataean, etc.) allows the creation of a chronological path whose point of arrival is the North Syrian cult of Zeus Bomos/Madbachos attested still in the 2nd and 3rd century CE.

This research starts with discussing the process of association of divine power to an object or a ritual object, passing through the notions of "aniconism" and "image ban", and then it lands to the case of the divinity-altar that pervades the Near Eastern cultural fabric and is performed in the most varied cultural contexts. Most of the sources which, with more or less certainty, attest to the existence of this process, whereby the altar represents the very image of the god, as well as his power, are concentrated in the Roman Era, although the aniconic phenomenon is much older.

Three case studies will be considered: Dushara-A'ra, the God-altar of Bostra associated with Dushara, the chef deity of the Nabataean pantheon; the case of Zeus-Altar present in the Northern Syria both in Greek and in Aramaic, and; finally, the case of a Zeus-hammana or Zeus of the hammana in Jerash, which is more complex to outline. The purpose of this presentation is to explore the divine representations of the Hellenistic Imperial Age in the Near East, which is not only the result of a process of osmosis and reworking of the ancient cultures, but also a new and peculiar cultural product, well distinct from the cultures of departure

Recent years have witnessed an exponential growth of data that link geographic locations with natural language texts (geo-text data for short). Examples include geotagged tweets, geotagged Wikipedia articles, as well as news articles and online reviews that contain place names. These geo-text data offer unique opportunities for discovering a variety of

knowledge. In this webinar, I present three studies that discover different knowledge by analyzing three types of geo-text data. The discovered knowledge can support disaster response, urban planning, and other applications that benefit our society.

Benvenuto! This is the ninth webinar in the Guild’s 2018 ten-part webinar series. My Italian One-Name Study will focus on how two of our Guild members approach working on a foreign one-name study. In this case, we are traveling to Italy!

Is the surname that you want to research and make your one-name study a “foreign” one? Perhaps you don’t speak the language or you wonder how you will handle translations, foreign record offices and websites, or putting your study together for a world-wide audience. This month Michael Cassara and Julie Goucher will explain how they each do Italian surname research and work on  their Italian one-name studies.

Perhaps your surname of interest is not Italian – no worries! You can apply their tips and suggestions to your own “foreign” one-name study. So wherever your surname originated and wherever it has traveled to, there is something for everyone to learn from My Italian One-Name Study.

Let’s meet the presenters

Michael Cassara is a professional genealogist and lecturer, based in New York City, with specialties in Italian/Sicilian genealogical research and genealogical technology. He holds a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University and serves on the board of the Italian Genealogical Group.

As a speaker, he has given multiple talks at RootsTech, the world’s largest family history conference, as well as to societies nationwide. In October, 2018, he will speak at the Association of Professional Genealogists’ Professional Management Conference in Kansas City, MO, and he’ll be speaking once again at RootsTech in February, 2019.

Julie Goucher has been researching her family history since the late 1980’s and has always been a history lover. A change in career path from the pharmacy industry had Julie returning to education and she undertook an Honours degree in history. Over the last decade or so Julie has focused more on the historical and genealogical aspects. Julie is half Sicilian and half English and has two one-name studies representing surnames from her parents. The Orlando study was registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies in 2002 and the Butcher study in 2016, although it had been a quiet work in progress for more than a decade.

Julie, a writer and presenter, is a Trustee for the Guild of One-Name Studies and is the Tutor for the Introduction to One-Name Studies course offered by Pharos Tutors.
