In Memoriam: Petro Siredzhuk (1949–2026)

Historian of Hutsulshchyna, Keeper of the Archival Memory of the Carpathians

The Ukrainian historical and regional-studies community has lost one of its most persistent researchers of Hutsulshchyna and Galicia. Petro Siredzhuk, historian, professor, local historian, archaeographic researcher and specialist in the historical geography, toponymy and onomastics of the Carpathian region, died in September 2026. His death was announced on 15 September by the Carpathian National University named after Vasyl Stefanyk, where he remained a leading specialist of the Educational and Scientific Institute of History, Ethnology and Archaeology of the Carpathians.

Siredzhuk belonged to a particular tradition of Ukrainian scholarship in which the historian is simultaneously an archivist, field researcher, regional historian and interpreter of local cultural memory. He was born on 23 November 1949 in Kosmach, one of the best-known Hutsul villages of the Carpathians, into a Hutsul peasant family. His birthplace was to remain at the centre of his intellectual world throughout his life. He graduated from the history and pedagogy faculty of the Ivano-Frankivsk Pedagogical Institute in 1976.

His professional trajectory was unusually varied. From 1976 to 1978 he taught history and geography in Ustechko in the Zalishchyky district. Between 1978 and 1994 he served in the Ministry of Internal Affairs structures in Lviv, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. From 1994 to 2004 he taught social disciplines at the Lviv Institute of Internal Affairs, and from 2004 worked as senior lecturer and associate professor at the Ivano-Frankivsk Institute of Management of Ternopil National Economic University. In 2008 he joined the Institute of History, Ethnology and Archaeology of the Carpathians; in 2018–2020 he was professor of the university department concerned with Central and Eastern European history and special historical disciplines, and from 2021 continued as a leading specialist of the Carpathian institute.

His first major scholarly project already anticipated one of the defining characteristics of his later research: the reconstruction of settlement history through archival documentation. In 1989, at Lviv State University, he defended a candidate dissertation on “The History of the Settlement of the Galician Land in the Fourteenth–Eighteenth Centuries.” His earlier article Zaselennia Halytskoi zemli v XIV–XVIII st. had appeared in the Ukrainian Historical Journal in 1984. This work placed settlement chronology, archival attestations and the historical geography of Galicia at the heart of his scholarship.

A second major phase of his research concerned the German population of Eastern Galicia. On 22 April 2010 he defended his doctoral dissertation, The Socio-Economic Situation and Cultural Life of the German Minority of Eastern Galicia in the 1920s–1930s. The official dissertation record describes it as a wide archival investigation of settlement, demographic composition, socioeconomic conditions and cultural life, including sources from Ukrainian and foreign archives. He was awarded the title of professor in 2015.

Yet Hutsulshchyna remained his enduring scholarly homeland. He researched medieval and early-modern documents relating to the Carpathian region, sought out previously unknown or neglected first mentions of villages, and reconstructed the chronology of settlement in Pokuttia and the Hutsul region. The university specifically remembered his interest in archival documents containing the earliest references to settlements of the region.

This work gave Siredzhuk a particular importance for toponymy. His contribution was often different from that of a linguistic etymologist. Rather than beginning primarily with morphological reconstruction, he supplied something equally indispensable: dated historical forms and documentary contexts. A toponym cannot be securely interpreted without knowing how early it occurs, how it was written, and in what administrative or demographic setting. Later toponymists repeatedly relied on his archival findings. A modern historical-etymological dictionary of the oikonymy of Ivano-Frankivsk region, for example, cites Siredzhuk's 2003 research for the attestation of Kosmach in 1412 and again in 1607.

His 1999 study “From the Chronicle of the Settlement of Galician Hutsulshchyna” became an important reference for the dating of Hutsul settlements. A comparison of competing first-attestation dates shows Siredzhuk's evidence being used for such places as Akreshory, Barvinkiv, Berezhnytsia, Bila Richka, Kosmach, Stopchativ and Luh. This is precisely where historical research and toponymy meet: establishing the documentary biography of a name.

Siredzhuk also worked directly with anthroponymic material. His 2014 article “The Yabluniv Estate in 1752” analysed an eighteenth-century inventory not only for socioeconomic and demographic history but explicitly for the onomasticon of the inhabitants of the Yabluniv area. The repository of his university describes the personal-name evidence as one of the study's research applications. Historical inventories of this kind preserve personal names, family names, occupational designations and settlement affiliations at precisely the stage when modern hereditary surname systems were developing and stabilising.

His work also became useful to researchers examining the German layer in the toponymy of Pokuttia. Myroslav Haborak's detailed study of German-language elements in Pokuttian place-names cites Siredzhuk's The German Diaspora of Pokuttia (late eighteenth century–1930s) as an historical source for German settlement. Haborak's analysis includes settlement names such as Augustdorf, Baginsberg and other German colonial formations. Siredzhuk's own article was historical rather than a linguistic toponymic analysis, but it supplied the demographic and settlement history necessary for interpreting this stratum of names.

His attachment to Kosmach also produced an unusual combination of documentary history and local onomastic memory. Researchers discussing the origin of the name Kosmach have noted Siredzhuk's examination of village inventories from 1727, 1738, 1745, 1752 and 1780; he found no evidence there for the surname Kosmachuk, a detail relevant to evaluating the popular legend that the settlement was named after a first inhabitant bearing that name.

His research interests were extraordinarily broad. The university lists archaeology, archaeography, biography, Hutsul studies, demography, ethnology, history, castellology, cartography, local history, cultural studies, onomastics, folklore and toponymy among the fields in which he worked. An earlier faculty profile is even more specific, describing his lifelong interests as including anthroponymy and toponymy of Galicia.

Nor was his research confined to libraries. He organized three archaeological expeditions devoted to monuments of the Kosiv region and, together with archaeologist Mykola Bandrivsky, participated in excavations of the Hallstatt-period salt-production centre at Kosmach.

Siredzhuk was also deeply involved in institutions devoted to Hutsul cultural memory. In 1991 he helped establish the regional cultural society Hutsulshchyna in Lviv. From 1994 he was a permanent member of the Hutsul Research Institute in Chicago and headed the historical and regional-studies section of a regional association of Hutsul researchers. He was also associated with the editorial work of the journal Grazhda.

His scholarship received recognition both in Ukraine and abroad. He was awarded the Ivan Krypiakevych Prize in 1996, became an honorary member of the Union of Local Historians of Prykarpattia in 1997, held research fellowships of the Polish Academy of Sciences in several years, received a Queen Jadwiga scholarship at the Jagiellonian University, and had a research fellowship in Germany. In 2021 he became one of the laureates of the Volodymyr Poliek Regional Studies Prize, awarded for contributions to researching, preserving and popularising the historical and cultural heritage of Prykarpattia.

His output remained substantial until very late in life. The university's final notice credits him with more than 400 historical and regional publications, including about 200 scholarly works. His late books included Sich Riflemen and Officers of Galician Hutsulshchyna (2021), The First Hutsul Company of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen under Captain Klym Hutkovskyi (2022), The Second Hutsul Company of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (2023), Sich Riflemen and Officers of Sniatynshchyna and Zabolotivshchyna (2024), and The Pokuttia Company of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen of Sen Horuk (2025). His 2024 volume was subsequently recognised in the military-history category of the regional “Best Book of Prykarpattia” selection.

What perhaps best characterises Petro Siredzhuk's legacy is not a single theory or a single book, but his extraordinary devotion to documentary recovery. He searched archives for the first appearance of villages, reconstructed vanished communities, edited inventories, traced population movements and restored names of people who otherwise would have disappeared from historical memory.

For onomastics, this work matters profoundly. Names require documents. A medieval or early-modern place-name becomes historically usable when someone locates its earliest form; a surname becomes evidence when an inventory fixes it to a person, a household and a locality. Siredzhuk spent decades doing precisely this foundational work.

His death leaves Ukrainian Hutsul studies without one of its most tireless archival researchers. But the settlements, names and people he recovered from old documents will continue to be cited long after his own name has entered the history he studied.

Selected works particularly relevant to toponymy and onomastics

The following is the most defensible list I could reconstruct online. I distinguish direct onomastic/toponymic work from historical publications that became important source material for name studies.

С. 1984, № 6, pp. 81–89. — Historical settlement research fundamental for dating the emergence of Galician oikonyms.
С. 1984, № 2, pp. 102–108. — Historical geography and settlement chronology, closely relevant to place-name history.
С. Candidate dissertation, Lviv State University, 1989. — A major documentary study of settlement history; subsequent historical and toponymic scholarship continued to use archival material consulted in this dissertation.
С. Kyiv, 1994, 109 pp. — Settlement history with clear value for historical geography and oikonymic chronology.
С. 1997. — One of his most directly relevant contributions to historical toponymy: establishing first documentary attestations of settlement names. The university and regional library both identify it among his major publications.
С. In Історія Гуцульщини, vol. IV, Lviv: Logos, 1999, pp. 124–150. — Frequently used by later researchers for settlement chronology and first attestations of Hutsul place-names.
С. 2000, vol. 3, pp. 42–49. — Primarily a historical-demographic study rather than an onomastic article, but later research on German-language elements in Pokuttian toponymy uses it as a historical source for colonial settlements and their names.
С. Ivano-Frankivsk: Tipovit, 2003, pp. 41–54. — Later historical-etymological work cites it for early forms and dates of settlement names, including Kosmach (1412, 1607).
С. Lviv: Triada Plus, 2011, 375 pp. — A large local documentary work; the Vernadsky National Library classifies it additionally under Ukrainian peasant genealogy, making it relevant to local anthroponymic and genealogical study.
С. 2014, issue 26, pp. 3–8. — The clearest explicitly onomastic study I found: Siredzhuk states that the 1752 inventory is valuable for studying the ethnic composition and onomasticon of the inhabitants of Yablunivshchyna.
С. ** Kosiv: Pysanyi Kamin, 2015, 228 pp. — An edited historical source of considerable potential value for historical anthroponymy and toponymy because inventories preserve names of inhabitants, settlements, landholdings and local features. The publication itself is confirmed in the university's scholarly reporting.
  12. Related collaborative/local-history corpus: Старожитності Косівщини (1997), Старожитності Гуцульщини (2011), and the multi-volume Історія Гуцульщини. These are not exclusively onomastic works, but they preserve a large documentary body of historical place-names and local personal names to which Siredzhuk contributed.
