From Foreign to Familiar: Transliteration Challenges in the Latinization of Kazakh Exonyms

The Forum for Linguistic Studies has just published our article in Volume 7, Issue 6 (June 2025):

“From Foreign to Familiar: Transliteration Challenges in the Latinization of Kazakh Exonyms” by Kyzdarkhan Rysbergen, Nursaule Rsaliyeva, Dana Pashan, Eugen Schochenmaier, and
Seyitbatkal Arlen

📚 What’s Inside:

  • The transition from Cyrillic to Latin of the Kazakh language is modernizing everyday writing - but raises key issues for exonyms (foreign place names in Kazakh).

  • The article offers a stratified transliteration model, drawing on UNGEGN principles and corpus analysis to evaluate phonological, orthographic, and sociolinguistic aspects.

  • Using data from maps and Kazakh-language corpora, the authors show that Russian-style exonyms still dominate, though direct Latin transliterations from English and others are emerging.

  • The study also addresses challenges with languages like Chinese and offers a balanced approach: maintain Kazakh phonological integrity without losing global recognizability.

  • The paper concludes with recommendations: consistent phonetic rules, public digital name registries, and educational initiatives.

Forum for Linguistic Studies

"From Foreign to Familiar: Transliteration Challenges in the Latinization of Kazakh Exonyms",

Exploring Volume 4, Issue 3 (2024) of the Nordic Journal of Socio-Onomastics

 link

The Nordic Journal of Socio-Onomastics (NoSo) has just released its latest issue, Volume 4, Issue 3 (2024). Published by the Royal Gustavus Adolphus Academy for Swedish Folk Culture, this special edition delves into the intersection of personal names and multilingualism in historical contexts.

Thematic Focus: Names and Multilingualism

The issue centers around the symposium "Personal Names and Migration during the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times," held in Uppsala in 2022. Editors Daniel Solling and Michelle Waldispühl, in collaboration with researchers from diverse institutions, explore the dynamics of historical onomastics through articles that examine migration, language contact, and identity.

Highlights of the Issue

This volume features four groundbreaking articles that collectively illuminate various facets of historical name studies:

  1. Personal Names and Migration: An Overview
Michelle Waldispühl provides a comprehensive survey of how migration influences naming conventions, blending insights from historical and modern perspectives. The article emphasizes the socio-cultural and legal aspects of names in multilingual contexts.

  2. Ethnic Identities in Medieval Stockholm
Lennart Ryman examines how Finns and Germans were documented in Stockholm's medieval records, revealing a nuanced interplay of linguistic identity and social perceptions.

  3. The Evolution of Names in Medieval Sweden
Daniel Solling traces the fusion of native Swedish names with borrowed forms like Silvester, highlighting the influence of phonetics and religious associations on naming trends.

  4. Diminutive Name Forms in Medieval Denmark
Birgit Eggert investigates the spread of diminutive suffixes in Danish names, tying them to Low German migration patterns and their eventual integration into rural Danish communities.

Pioneering Research

The articles reflect interdisciplinary approaches, merging history, linguistics, and sociology. From the adaptation of names in multilingual societies to the socio-political implications of naming practices, the issue pushes the boundaries of socio-onomastic research.

Why It Matters

In a world increasingly defined by cultural exchanges, understanding historical naming practices enriches our perspective on identity and integration. This issue not only provides a scholarly resource but also serves as inspiration for future studies in the evolving field of socio-onomastics.

Argotica, n° 1(10)/2021 : "Les noms propres en argot(s)"

 lien

Revue en ligne ARGOTICA, Xe Année, n° 1(10)/2021

ISSN : 2343-7200

Surname Regions and Dialectal Variation in the Asturian Linguistic Space

 link

Today, I'd like to share a valuable article concerning geonomastics ! It's worth reading.

Xulio Sousa & María José Ginzo-Villamayor. “Surname Regions and Dialectal Variation in the Asturian Linguistic Space.” Journal of Linguistic Geography, 2021, 1–13. doi:10.1017/jlg.2020.8

Studies on the correlations between spatial distribution of linguistic varieties and genetic structure of populations began by dealing with geographic spaces and extensive linguistic families. In the last two decades, researchers with this type of interdisciplinary approach have also begun to study more reduced linguistic and population domains. This paper examines geolinguistic and onomastic information in a linguistic and administrative space of a limited extension of the Principality of Asturias. The information on the surnames of this region, taken from the inhabitants’ register, is used to identify surname regions and check correlations with dialect areas described in this space. The results obtained in this research show many similarities in the distribution of surname regions with dialect areas recognized by traditional dialectology studies. The conclusions of the study present the results obtained together with some of the explanatory proposals on the historical constitution of the linguistic diversity of this area.

On the term "cognitive toponymy"

Martynenko I.A.1

ON THE TERM ‘COGNITIVE TOPONYMY’
Abstract

The article is devoted to the theoretical base of consideration of toponyms through the prism of cognitive and linguistic traditions. The author studies the advisability of introducing the terms "cognitive toponymy" and "cognitive toponym" and, after conducting a comprehensive analysis of domestic and foreign scientific literature on the topic, shows that, in general, researchers are careful with terminology in a cognitive toponymic context, preferring to replace the collocations "cognitive toponymy" and "cognitive toponym" by descriptive constructions. The article substantiates the conclusion about their necessity in an onomastic terminology system and puts forward proposals for the formulation of the definition of these terms. The author makes assumptions about the goals and objectives of cognitive toponymy as a science. The close connection between the scientific and cognitive approach and toponymy is supported by examples.
Keywords: toponymy, cognitive approach, onomastics, concept, term.

1. Introduction

In the 21st century, toponymic research methods are characterized by the rapid development of Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies, updating of the term system, the emergence of new trends in scientific onomastic study. Any modern scientific research requires the use of new approaches in the consideration of geographical nominations and their comprehensive study using new methods.

Recent studies in the field of cognitive linguistics have given impetus to the development of toponymy research in this aspect. “At present, cognitive linguistics is one of the most actively developing and relatively young areas of modern linguistics” [11, P. 85].

In recent years, the term “cognitive toponymy” has become more widely used in the works of Russian and foreign scientists. Our task is to understand the rightfulness, expediency and validity of the appearance of this relatively new term.
