10 números de Noms, 45 anys d’onomàstica

link

by Albert Turull (Coordinador de Noms)

Database "Toponyms of Pisidia and Lycia" is searchable online

database

TPL (Toponyms of Pisidia and Lycia) is a searchable online database containing the metadata of Pisidian and Lycian place names attested in the Greco-Roman period (8th century BC, 3rd century BC) in Greek and Latin.

The different places are listed on a georeferenced map, allowing to locate the place names precisely and to identify the different places in the space. This project results from Lauriane Locatelli's thesis entitled "The toponymy and ethnonymy of ancient Pisidia (13th century BC, early 4th century BC)", defended on 28 June 2017 at UCLouvain (Belgium) in co-operation with UBFC (France).

The georeferenced map also includes Lycia in collaboration with Simone Podestà (UBFC, Unige) author of a thesis entitled "Storia e storiografia della Licia", defended on December 5, 2016 in Paris 4 in cotutelle with the Università degli studi (Genoa, Italy), to be published by PUFC.

This project aims to give access to the references of Pisidian place names in literary sources and to provide a georeferenced map of places of Pisidia and ancient Lycia.

Call for papers: "Proper Names in the Interdisciplinary Context"

ICOS

Dear colleagues!

We are pleased to invite you to the 21st Slovak Onomastic Conference titled "Proper Names in the Interdisciplinary Context" to be held in Nitra at the Constantine the Philosopher University from 10 to 12 September 2019.

The study of names is fractured by interdisciplinary and methodological divisions. Proper names may be analysed from various linguistic aspects: morphological, lexical-semantic, dialectal, sociolinguistic, etymological, stylistic, etc. Onomastics also applies knowledge of other disciplines, such as history, ethnography, geography, literary science, psychology, sociology, translatology and others. Whereas, it enriches in return their scientific results.
At the conference, we expect to welcome not only professional onomatologists, but also researchers from other leading disciplines who are confronted with issues related to the use of the proper names.

Thematic areas of the conference are:
1. Theoretical issues of onomastics (interrelationship with leading disciplines such as history, archeology, geography, law, economics, psychology, sociology, literary science, aesthetics, semiotics, translatology, etc.)
2. Analysis of specific kinds of onyms (anthroponyms, toponyms and chrematonyms of various nations and regions, literary onomastics, translations of proper names, name-based historical sources, historical onomastics, socio-onomastics, psycho-onomastics, semiotics of proper names, etc.)
3. Onomastic terminology (literary onomastics, socio-onomastics, psycho-onomastics, areal onomastics, onomastic grammar, onomastic semantics, etc.)
Applications forms will be accepted until April 30, 2019 by e-mail onomastika2019@gmail.com (contact person Barbara Repková). The conference fee must be paid by 31 May 2019.
In the attachment, you will find the invitation and the application form.

Preliminary Programme of "Names in the Economy 6" (NITE)

L’usage des toponymes en R.D. Congo : pour une nécessaire normalisation

lien

I. Problématique

1. Teoretické otázky onomastiky (skúmanie vzťahu onomastiky k vedným odborom ako história a archeológia, geografia, právo, ekonomika, psychológia, sociológia, literárna veda, estetika, semiotika, translatológia atď.)

2. Analýza jednotlivých onymických sústav (antroponymia, toponymia a chrématonymia jednotlivých národov a regiónov; vlastné mená v literárnych dielach, prekladoch, historických prameňoch, reklamách, vo viacjazyčnom prostredí; historický, socioonomastický, psychoonomastický, semiotický výskum vlastných mien atď.)

Konferenčný poplatok je potrebné zaplatiť do 31. 5. 2019

Tensions emerge over renaming Welsh Assembly the Senedd

bbc

A law renaming the assembly the Senedd will include an English explanation of the word's meaning, the institution's presiding officer has said.
BBC Wales understands some AMs were unhappy with Elin Jones's plan to give the institution a Welsh-only name.
Ms Jones, who is in charge of assembly day-to-day business, said most AMs backed Senedd name, meaning parliament.
Welsh language campaigners accused her of "opening the door on giving the institution a de facto bilingual name".
However the Conservatives said a "fully bilingual name" was what they wanted, and the assembly should become "Senedd Cymru/ Welsh Parliament".
A bill to rename the institution and cut the voting age to 16 in assembly elections is expected in the next couple of weeks.
Last November Ms Jones told AMs she had decided the assembly would be given the "monolingual name 'Senedd' and that members will be referred to as 'Aelodau'r Senedd/Members of the Senedd'".
Some assembly members, including most Conservatives, were opposed to the decision, BBC Wales has been told. One said the plan had been "watered down".
An assembly source said there had been a "compromise".
In an interview with BBC's Sunday Politics Wales programme, Ms Jones said the name Senedd "seems to me to have the greatest support" among AMs.
"Of course, we are a Welsh parliament, we are a Senedd now, and we do need to call ourselves that," she said.
"Formally this institution will be called the Senedd, if the members agree to that legislation.
"The legislation itself will describe the Senedd as the Welsh parliament.
"Members, people in Wales, people outside of Wales who don't speak Welsh will of course be able to use the terms Senedd and hopefully that will become more familiar to more people.
"But of course it needs to be described as the Welsh parliament because that is of more immediate understanding to those people who don't speak Welsh.
"But over time the formal name will establish itself."

Conférence `La toponymie dans le Condroz`

lien

The Fifth International Conference on Onomastics “Name and Naming”
Baia Mare, September 3-5, 2019
Multiculturalism in Onomastics

Sections:
  • Multiculturalism in Anthroponymy
  • Multiculturalism in Toponymy
  • Multiculturalism in Names in Public Space (e.g., commercial names etc.)
Official conference languages: Romanian, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish.

Multiculturalism is a more and more prominent topic in contemporary international public space, whether one considers it in relation to politics, religion, ethnicity or culture. In what onomastics is concerned, multiculturalism appears in all its subfields. In toponymy, for instance, in multi-ethnic areas there are names with etymologies from different languages; when analysed in diachrony, these names testify to the history and geography of the places in question. In anthroponymy, the multicultural element is associated with religion, ethnic belonging and the onomastic fashion of a certain age. In ergonymy, multiculturalism mirrors the configuration of the present-day world, in which globalisation determines the existence of an increasingly diverse landscape, as regards names of companies, brands and products.

Deadline: April 1, 2019!!!

Contribute to names' pronunciation, or what's Cofactor Ora Named-Entity Dictionary

link

The importance of documenting pronunciations
Without a pronunciation dictionary, it's impossible to guess that Houston Street in New York is pronounced /ˈhaʊstən/, unlike the city of Houston in Texas. These two Houstons are named after different people that pronounced their names differently, but it's only Houston, TX that is listed in most existing dictionaries with the /ˈhjuːstən/ pronunciation. There are countless other homographs that have different pronunciations depending on meaning and that cannot be found in traditional dictionaries. There is at least one Houston in each US state, not even counting street names...
Ora's solution
To overcome the limitations of traditional pronunciation dictionaries, Cofactor Ora integrates with the Google Knowledge Graph and lets everyone edit and contribute pronunciations of words: both audio recordings and IPA pronunciation respellings.
Integration with the Google Knowledge Graph
Traditional dictionaries cannot unambigously define the location of each Houston with a paragraph or two of text. Referencing an entity in the Google Knowledge Graph, each place name in Ora is linked to a location in Google Maps. In case of people, the Knowledge Graph links to the Wikipedia articles about each person and their social media profiles. This allows Ora to list pronunciations for any number of people, places, and things that ever existed and to outgrow any existing pronunciation dictionary.
Crowdsourcing pronunciation knowledge
It would be nearly impossible for a handful of traditional dictionary editors to confirm the correct pronunciations of all people and places on Earth. By allowing everyone to share their pronunciation knowledge, Ora can collect correct pronunciations of any number of named entities. You can learn more about the difference between named entities and regular dictionary headwords here.
Why your contributions are important
It's only through collaboration and participation of communities from all over the world and experts from domains of science and industry that Ora can acheive it's goal of becoming the largest pronunciation dictionary of named entities. Being a free and ad-free source of structured pronunciation data, Ora helps raise awareness of language preservation and promotes linguistic research.
